Edition 38, 28 November 2014 Contents Headmaster Year 8 Kangaroobie Camp Headmaster Year 8 Kangaroobie Camp Cricket All Year 8 students will be spending next week at Kangaroobie Camp near Port Campbell in the Otways. The outdoor activities at the camp will provide a valuable learning experience for our students as they challenge themselves in ways they do not often experience in the classroom. The focus of this particular camp will be on the students’ transition from the Middle School to the Senior School, and current Form Room Teachers, Senior School Heads of House and Prefects will be at the camp to assist with this significant transition. I look forward to seeing the boys in action when Ms Falloon and I visit the camp on Tuesday. I am grateful to the teachers who give up time with their families to be with the students, and particularly to Ms Kirsty McDougall who has coordinated the program. Kayaking Summer Vacation Activities Volleyball Over December and January, a significant number of our students will be involved in school related activities. Some of the highlights of the vacation program include: World Challenge Trip to Nepal Mr Ian March will accompany eight students from Year 11 for a month-long trip departing this Friday and returning on Wednesday 24 December, on a spectacular trekking adventure on a World Challenge Trip to Nepal. The trip consists of community service, two weeks trekking in the Annapurna region and white water rafting in Chitwan National Park. Students will learn to work as a team, lead a group, communicate with others, make decisions effectively, plan and problem solve, thus improving their confidence and self-reliance. Tasmanian Adventure Dr Murray Anderson, Ms Kirsty McDougall and a group of 12 boys will fly to Hobart and hike for six days along the Tasman Coastal Trail in the Tasman National Park, from Friday 12 to Thursday 18 December. They will explore the sandy beaches, rugged sea cliffs and beautiful sheltered rainforest which follows the coast-line from Waterfall Bay through to Fortescue Beach, out to Cape Hauy and on to Cape Pillar. Chinese Exchange to Nanjing, China Seven Senior School students will this weekend be heading off for a Chinese Exchange to our sister school in Nanjing. They depart tomorrow and return on Saturday 20 December. They will be staying with host families and will attend the Nanjing Foreign Language School. Cricket The 1st XI Cricket Team will travel to Adelaide from Monday 15 to Saturday 20 January for the annual Neil Dansie Festival, involving four schools: Camberwell Grammar School, St Peter’s, Toowoomba Grammar and Knox Grammar School. Kayaking The Kayaking Squad will be taking part in The Ben Ward 40 Mile Race on Saturday 13 December. It will run from Cobram to Tocumwal. Volleyball The 1sts Volleyball Team will be participating in the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup from Monday 8 to Friday 12 December. This event is the largest school-based sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting teams from across Australia, plus international teams. The event is the responsibility of Volleyball Australia and is organised by the Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup Event Commission. Army Cadet Unit – Courses Camp December 2014 Leadership Courses will be conducted for our Cadets, by the Australian Army Cadets at Puckapunyal Army Camp between Sunday 7 December and Sunday 14 December. I would like to thank all staff involved in the vacation activities, our students are very fortunate that our teachers are prepared to give their vacation time to provide such rich and rewarding experiences. While students may think it is a fun and quirky way to share their life with friends, they do not always consider that a picture or comment can come back to haunt them. ‘Headspace’ has partnered with Instagram and ‘ConnectSafely’ to produce a guide for parents about the safe use of Instagram which can be found here. The site provides tips, safety advice, articles, news, analysis, video and other resources to promote the safe and effective use of connected technology. Sport Report The final round of sport for 2014 saw many of the First Teams have byes, although this did not prevent Camberwell recording a number of wins including success in Cycling, Basketball and Tennis. The Cycling Team competed in their first Team Time Trial on the weekend, with the weather suiting the evening race time. A crash unfortunately ended CGS Team 2’s race; however, Team 1 raced well to record an average time of 5:33 for each of their eight, 3km laps. Hamish Webber (Year 10) competed in a separate team, comprised of fellow club cyclists, was placed as the number one seed and were the last team to race. Congratulations to Hamish and his team, the Campaneros, who secured first place. First Tennis had a bye this week; however, many other teams had fixture games. 9A Tennis played PEGS and after taking a three sets to one lead in the doubles, the team faltered slightly losing three singles matches. However Camberwell’s lower seeds played impressively with the season’s best performances from Luke Huang and Byron Wu (Year 8) securing an eight sets to four win for Camberwell. 9C Gold Tennis also performed well over the weekend. Steven Connelly (Year 8) and David Chen (Year 8) set up a tight but solid win from the team, the end result being seven sets to five. This is their third consecutive win for the season. Camberwell’s 9A Cricket side played Marcellin on Saturday. After winning the toss and batting, Camberwell made a competitive 129, aided by Alex Chauhan’s 33 (Year 8), including 3 towering sixes, and Jack Fitzgerald’s crafty 26 (Year 8). Consistent bowling from Darcy MacCuspie (Year 8) and Ali Fitzgerald (Year 8) saw Marcellin reduced to 3 for 57. However, the game proved to have one final twist with some strong hitting from Marcellin securing a tie on the last ball of the day. The First Squash Team had an encouraging win against archrivals Trinity in the final round for 2014. Christian Mouritz (Year 11) had a great win at second seed, winning three games to love whilst Matthew Appleby (Year 11) played fierce squash, defeating his opponent in four sets to one in the singles and combining with Harrison Mourelatos (Year 11) in the Doubles to trounce the opposition three-love. Second Squash played well but was overcome by a powerful Yarra Valley side, Jonthan Duan and Patrick Hawkins (both Year 10) fighting tenaciously in their Doubles’ matches. Mr Hone’s 10A Basketball side played Melbourne Grammar, recording their first victory of the season. On the back of three 3-point shots and some solid defensive play, the team is sure to return in the new year with optimism for the remainder of the season. Strong rebounding and passing play, and a stellar game from Oliver Wong (Year 9) led Camberwell to a 46-29 point win. Oliver Chauhan, Captain of Games Paul Hicks, Headmaster Middle School Farewell to Year 8 It has been a special few days as we farewelled the Year 8 boys from Middle School this week. On Thursday we held our own Leavers’ Assembly, where Sam Garrard (Year 7) thanked the Year 8 students for their leadership and guidance throughout the year. Ben Chesler (Year 8) responded on behalf of the Year 8 boys in his own inimitable style, sharing some memories of his time in Middle School. Year 8 students Fin Sampson, Sean Halley and Cyrus Chan entertained us with their own arrangement of an Arctic Monkeys song and a percussion band comprising of Emile Akbarzadeh, Roger Jin, Matthew Perri (Year 8) and Henry Koswig (Year 7) played a thoroughly entertaining piece for us. We were also able to present the HL Tonkin Cup for the House championship to Summons. Amanda Mandie from KOALA Kids accepted a cheque for $5,628.45 from our annual run/walk and Sonali Padman from Projec10 received a cheque for $2,027.72 from the Year 8 Social. It was certainly an action packed Assembly and I particularly enjoyed the great slideshow tribute to the Year 8s and the final singing of the School Song. Today the Year 8 boys packed up their lockers and spent the afternoon preparing their bags for next week’s camp. They are a magnificent group of young men and I wish them well for the camp and the Page 2 Contents Year 9 transition program the following week. We will miss their positive energy and exuberance in Middle School and I thank them as a cohort for their superb contribution to life in Middle School, especially this year. Year 8 Kangaroobie Camp Church Service Summer Vacation Activities We enjoyed our Advent service at St Mark’s this morning, with the Middle School section of the Carol Choir proving a highlight. This was the final time that our three year levels would come together as a Middle School, so it proved to be a special occasion. The Youth Leader at St Mark’s, Ben Hewitt, addressed us and we were able to thank Tim Clare, from Mustard, for his contribution to life at Camberwell Grammar in recent years. Tim has been integral in the running of our services and under his leadership a strong bond has formed between the School and Mustard. Tim is now moving on to new adventures and we wish him all the very best. There is no charge for the sausage and icy-pole treat. Lost Property As the 2014 school year draws to a close it is timely to remind parents to check the Lost Property drawers. Lost property is located past Reception on the way through to the Art Studio. We currently have a number of uniform items, lunch boxes, drink bottles, swimming goggles etc. Some items have the name of the previous owner and we are unable to pass these back to boys, most items are not named. Please take the time to check Lost Property in the drawers or when it is displayed outside Reception next week. Final Day Dismissal – Thursday, 11 December 12noon The Christmas Church service will finish at approximately 12.00noon and all boys will be dismissed from the church to leave with their parents. This impressive service brings our year to a fitting conclusion and all families are invited to attend. The boys prepare special Christmas carols for you to enjoy. We kindly request that cameras are not used during the church service. Please note the following: • On this day, boys are to bring recess, not lunch, to School in disposable bags. No boys will return to the Junior School. • Friday 12 December is a staff only day. Howard Kelly, Head of Junior School Sport Summer Sport training has finished for most teams (only First XI Cricket and Kayaking are continuing their training for a few more weeks). Volleyball, Orienteering, Tennis, Triathlon, Table Tennis and Badminton all sit inside the top four on their respective ladders at this stage of the season. Cycling, a new sport to Camberwell Grammar, has continued to impress with three successful events being held over Term 4 and another four to go during Term 1, 2015. Mr Brian Nguyen and Captain Hamish Webber have led a spirited group of students in what is a growing and exciting sport at Camberwell Grammar. Summer Training resumes as of Monday 2 February 2015 for all sports. Some Firsts teams may commence earlier however, so students will need to check with their coaches if they are in one of those squads. The first Saturday competition for 2015 is Saturday 7 February. Well done to the Old Boys who successfully defeated the current First XI in the final Cricket match ever to be played on the old KAO before it gets reconstructed. They looked shaky early but managed to rally and torment their younger counterparts to take the match in a close finish. Thanks to Bill Mallinson for all of his work in getting the match organised. It looks like it will be a more regular event in future too. Good luck to the First XI Cricket Team on their tour in January to Adelaide for the annual Neil Dansie Cricket Festival. Jamie Watson, Director of Sport Careers Applying for a Tax File Number The Secondary Schools Tax File Number (TFN) Program will not continue beyond 31 December 2014. This means that School TFN forms will no longer be processed beyond this date. All Year 9 Camberwell Grammar students will receive a TFN application form on 3 December as part of their OHS training day. Thus, parents wishing to use the school service will need to ensure that the completed form is returned to Student Services by December 17 2014. From 1 January 2015 students can apply for a TFN online and have their identity verified through an interview at a participating Australia Post office. Applying online is the fastest and most convenient way for students to get a TFN. More information on applying online can be found at ato.gov.au by searching for ‘QC27248’.
