Make a difference at Memorial Healthcare Foundation
By Barb Nagengast
Other than Rotary, my next
most satisfying avenue of community service is on the Board of
Directors of Memorial Healthcare
Foundation. It has been personally rewarding to become a part of
an organization that has such an
impact on the lives of people in
our community!
Did you know that over the
past 10 years, the Foundation
has awarded 6.75 million to save
lives and to improve the quality
and experience of patients at Memorial Healthcare? It’s easy to
lose sight of the impact made by
our donors over the span of time.
But we cannot let ourselves do
that. We must thank our donors
and share their story – the impact
donor contributions make at Memorial Healthcare.
It’s not just the sum of our work
that has a big impact, but several
of our big projects are making
a big difference over time. Donors helped make the Memorial Cancer Center a reality with
gifts to our Join the Courageous
Campaign and continued annual
support. We now offer radiation
therapy in Shiawassee County,
along with a full scope of cancer
care services in a fantastic environment. The Edward & Della
Thome Long Term care unit has
been renovated and reconstructed
with donor support – eliminating
the notorious waiting list and satisfying a huge need for high quality skilled nursing home care. Our
FIT Kids program has taken on
the challenge of childhood obesity and is making a measurable
impact on the lives of our youth
and helping them to avoid the

OWOSSO PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDANT ANDREA TUTTLE spoke last
week about the district’s upcoming bond proposal. On February 24th, voters
will be asked to approve a $54 million plan to transform the current high school
into a middle school / high school campus with substantial academic, infrastructure, performing arts and athletic facility upgrades. Additionally, the plan calls for
safety improvements in all of Owosso’s school buildings, as well as technology
updates. Learn more at www.owosso.k12.mi.us.

early onset of cardiovascular disease. Our Family Birth Place has been
supported with donor contributions, and will benefit from the proceeds
of the 2015 Foundation Gala to renovate the four birthing suites. About
450 new souls take their first breath in the Family Birth Place each year.
The existence of our comprehensive OB services, including births,
should not be taken for granted. We are bucking a trend here, with a
recommitment and reinvestment in our birthing center. Many communities and hospitals our size have dropped birthing and OB support
dwindles and erodes with it. Not here. With donor support our OB
services and Family Birth Place remain strong.
Not every donor supported effort has such broad impact. Sometimes
donor contributions touch one life at a time. The Foundation’s Silver
Stars initiative helps provide cancer screenings at no cost to uninsured
individuals. Becky Sherer, a local pet-grooming business owner, found
herself in need of service and a screening identified stage three colon
cancer. Having undergone treatment and experiencing life as a cancer
survivor, Becky credits, “Silver Stars with a huge role in saving my
life.”
Whether with millions of dollars, or with a simple cancer screening,
donors are making a huge impact – saving and changing lives in our
community. It is a privilege to contribute to this special purpose and I
encourage you to support the cause when opportunities arise.

suggestion is that you take a topic
of current local, state, national or
world concern and write an opinion piece, stating your position.
