Táin Arts Centre
An Táin Arts Centre is the new arts space for
Dundalk, Co. Louth based in the former Táin
Theatre, Town Hall, Crowe Street. Established as an
independent organisation in early 2014, the board
of An Táin Arts Centre has been working behind the
scenes to reimagine this wonderful space as a point
of access to arts and culture for the people of North
Louth, and together with a small team of staff,
aims to provide a diverse programme of local arts,
national tours, workshops, visual arts and in-house
productions.
Since the launch of An Táin Arts Centre in August
2014 we have been working on a few exciting
projects to develop this second season programme
for January to April 2015. The first of these includes
the establishment of a professional theatre company
in residence: Quintessence Theatre Company,
founded by Dundalk actor Conor Honan and
director Anna Simpson, will be staging three shows
at An Táin Arts Centre in 2015, starting this season
with Oscar Wilde’s classic The Picture of Dorian
Gray. In addition to supporting new professional
local talent, we are also delighted to be bringing
several nationally touring productions to Dundalk,
including Peter Sheridan’s 44 Seville Place, local
actor and scientist Niamh Shaw’s To SPACE, Idan
Meir’s Bassam – the true life story of the founder of
an Israeli-Palestinian peace movement, The Legend
of Luke Kelly, and Bake! a delightful new play for
four to six year olds. There’s also more on offer at
An Táin Arts Centre for children and families, with
the continuation of weekly drama workshops for six
to ten year olds, and an exciting new schedule of
weekend lunchtime movies for families as part of our
film programme.
The coming season in The Basement Gallery kicks
off with the second installment of our emerging
artist series, followed by a contemporary take on
vinyl record nostalgia by Drogheda-based artist
Brian Hegarty, and Dundalk Photographic Society’s
Annual Exhibition. Local artist and art historian, Anne
Callanan, will be offering drawing classes for adults,
and there is also a wealth of other opportunities for
school and community groups to explore the visual
arts through our gallery community programme –
contact us to find out more.
Booking for events has never been easier using our
newly designed secure website where you can choose
your seat and book your tickets at a time that suits
you. Our box office is open Tuesday to Saturday
10.00 to 16.00, and our staff will be more than happy
to help you with your booking in person and by
telephone.
This is just the briefest of introductions to a jampacked programme, delve in to find out more and
keep an eye on our website for more news and events
as they arise. An Táin Arts Centre aims to be a place
for the community to celebrate in creativity and enjoy
the best of local and national art. We are striving to
make this a space for everyone to enjoy, and hope you

Jack and the Beanstalk
Dundalk Musical Society
It’s that time of year again….OH YES IT IS! When Dundalk Musical Society are
busy making the final preparations for their annual pantomime, a real tradition
in Dundalk and the event which traditionally brings the curtain down on the
Christmas festivities here in town. This year sees Jack reach the summit of a
beanstalk in search of his fortune and the hand of the lovely Jill. He meets many
friends and foes along the way with some hilarious consequences! The show
features an amazing cast of local talent, with over 80 children and young adults
taking to the stage as members of the chorus, whose singing and dancing will
enchant audiences and transport them to the magical land of panto. Tickets are

O’Sullivan’s work is concerned with the personal. Subjects include family,
the familiar and everyday objects. Starting with the representational,
her work often develops into the abstract as a result of experimentation
and careful editing. Murphy’s work explores the domestic environment,
where she concerns herself primarily with the traces people leave. Source
materials come first hand from houses under construction, and her work
stems from the transitional nature of these spaces.
Eimear Murphy and Eileen O’Sullivan are currently completing their
degree in Fine Art Painting in the National College of Art and Design,
Dublin.

The Great Hunger
Written by Patrick Kavanagh
Generally considered to be Patrick Kavanagh’s
finest work, The Great Hunger explores a life
of economic and imaginative deprivation. The
protagonist is bachelor farmer Patrick Maguire
who has spent years at his mother’s beck and
call. When she finally dies aged 91, Patrick is 65
and has missed the boat for finding a wife and
having a family of his own, a source of great
sorrow and regret to him. Peter Duffy’s powerful
theatrical performance of The Great Hunger
has been touring the country for the past
year to popular and critical acclaim, including
performances in the Irish Cultural Centre in Paris
and the Cathedral Quarter Festival in Belfast.

Sean O’Casey’s Juno and the Paycock is one of the
classics of the Irish theatre. The play looks at the
effects of the civil war on a Dublin household already
crippled by economic hardship and the efforts,
mainly by the mother, to keep the family on an even
keel. It is a damning indictment on the patriarchal
society of the time and a tribute to the power of that
great institution, the Irish Mother. We see, almost
a hundred years before the phrase was coined, the
family go through the ‘Celtic Tiger’ experience, from
spend, spend, spend to near destitution.

Half a century before the vogue for filming
Austen, MGM had dusted down this novel via
a stage adaptation. They cast Olivier as the
dashing, if cool, Mr Darcy - and a great job he
made of it. Garson plays the eldest of the five
daughters whose mother finds them a drain on
her purse and energy. Although the film is aware
that it’s Austen’s central social themes that
matter, it is the central romance between Darcy
and Elizabeth that kindles general audience
interest here. - Film 4

Written by George Orwell
Adapted and performed by Phelim Drew
A man drifting through life, in early 1930s Paris, teaching English and generally soaking up the rich
underbelly of Parisian life, finds himself falling helplessly short and discovering a very different view
of life, looking up from below. With a keen understanding of social inequality and a wry sense of
humour, he vividly recounts his experiences while down and out. Going from a sepia tinted view of
poverty in Paris to the more black and white existence in and around London, through characters
from a darkly funny Circus to the inhabitants of a Beckettian landscape.

The vinyl record is more than
just a by word for cultural
nostalgia. It has the capacity
to trigger memories and
convey emotion in the most
personal way. It is weighted
with symbolism, not just as a
twentieth century artifact but
also as a holder of many of
life’s accumulated experiences.
Love, loss, identity, ideology,

Wizard of Oz
Victor Fleming, 1939, USA, 102 mins, G
Judy Garland stars as Dorothy in a musical based on the classic children’s book by L. Frank
Baum. When Dorothy’s neighbor, Miss Gulch, threatens to take away Dorothy’s precious
dog, Toto, Dorothy runs away from home. Attempting to return, she and her house are
caught in a twister and blown to the garish, color-saturated Land of Oz. The house lands
atop Oz’s Wicked Witch of the East, killing her and making Dorothy an instant celebrity.
The Wicked Witch of the West, the sister of the deceased witch, soon arrives and
threatens revenge. Dorothy must escape from Oz by following the Yellow Brick Road to
the Emerald City, where the great Wizard of Oz can help her return to Kansas. Along the
way, Dorothy picks up some new friends - the heartless Tin Man, the brainless Scarecrow,
and the courage-less Cowardly Lion, each of whom hopes that the Wizard can offer him
what he lacks. The film deservedly holds a precious place in the hearts of millions.

The Legend Of
Luke Kelly
On 30th January 1984 it is
said that the whole of Dublin
grieved the early death of
Dubliner legend Luke Kelly. He
has left an indelible mark as
being the greatest folk artist of
the 20th Century and his music
is widely regarded as one of
Ireland’s cultural treasures.
Dublin singer/songwriter/multiinstrumentalist Chris Kavanagh
was born and raised on Irish
music and has been singing Irish
folk songs since he was three
years old. He learned to play the
piano by ear when he was five
and his love and passion for Luke
Kelly’s music led him to learn to
play the 5 string long neck banjo
in 2001.
Over the past twelve years he
has amazed audiences following
powerful sell-out performances
in prominent Irish venues with
the regular attendance of
Luke Kelly’s family. Chris bears
a remarkable resemblance to
Luke, while his singing talents
capture the depth and passion
of the great man. He is joined
on stage by accomplished
musicians who all consider
it an honour to bring Luke’s
memory to the stage in this
ultimate tribute to the King of
Balladeers.

Grainne Rafferty
In An Táin Arts Centre children are encouraged to learn new drama and theatre devising skills
through a series of fun games and activities. Each workshop is designed to foster and support
creativity and confidence, with class sizes affording each child the individual attention they
deserve. Through the programme, participants will also be supported in creating a piece of selfdevised theatre for performance at the end of term. Grainne Rafferty (B.A. Performing Arts) has
been facilitating drama classes for children and teenagers for the past 6 years.
