Nord Stern December 2014
The Prez Sez . . .
by Dave Anderson
I
drives that sometimes I’ve piggy-backed on
a monthly Porsches & Pancakes breakfast.
From austere beginnings both have gotten
some traction as the year comes to a close.
My expectation is that we’ll continue
through the winter and into 2015.
In an attempt to fix the dwindling DE
participation we’ll be making some schedule
changes next year. The most notable change
is moving the Road America “Cheese
Fling” from July to mid-June. Hopefully
by moving this event away from our Club
Race and filling the “gap” between First
and Fast Fling with a trip to Elkhart Lake,
we’ll be able to draw more of our Club
Racers over to Road America and pick
up some additional participation from
Milwaukee and Chicago PCA members. As
I write this month’s article we’re looking at
moving Last Fling into October due to some
scheduling conflicts with BIR, Fall Color
Tour, and Escape to Rushmore. As soon as
the track schedule gets finalized we’ll let
everyone know and I’ll get things ready on
ClubRegistration.net.
We’re also getting started in the planning
stages for the Holiday Party. We’ve been
looking into possible

started my term as Nord Stern’s 55th
President in the frigid climate of
January and February so I guess it’s
fitting that I bookend my term with the early
winter that caught a lot of us off guard. News
of the first significant snowfall came to me
as I sat in the scoring tower on an early
Sunday morning at Motorsport Ranch in
Cresson, TX where I was serving as Timing
& Scoring for one of the last PCA Club
Races of 2014. Well, shoot. I thought I’d
have another couple of weeks to get the 968
prepped, washed and put into storage for the
winter. It now sits in the driveway covered
in snow while I hope for some normal late
fall, early winter temperatures to get things
thawed out enough to finish what I should
have completed before the end of October.
We’ve had some ups and downs as a
Club in 2014. Our track events took a hit
with reduced participation at the Road
America, Fast Fling DE at Club Race,
and Last Fling Driver Training / Driver
Education events. On the other hand we’ve
added some additional social activities with
a monthly ‘Where’s the Prez’ destination

Nord Stern December 2014 yet, but stay tuned. As we did last year, we’ll
use every communication vehicle we’ve got
at our disposal to get the word out with as
much notice as we can get you.
Next year your President will be Rapid
City native Mike Sabers. I consciously
made this decision to bring Mike on as Vice
President during my term so as to have a
sitting President in the host city for the
PCA Escape 2015. I hear that dignitaries
from PCA and Porsche Germany will be in
attendance. With Nord Stern playing host for
Escape to Rushmore, having Mike in Rapid
City will be a excellent liaison for planning
and execution.
Speaking of which, Arlyce and Jim
Lillegaard have done significant work in
the planning stages. I’d like to take this
opportunity to thank them for all their
efforts in personal time and expenses.
Their hard work has not gone unnoticed
by National and they’ve set the bar high
for future Escapes. With Escape 2014 now
in the books, it’s time to start working into
the execution phases of which Arlyce and
Jim will need some help from Nord Stern
membership. Watch for communications
from them in the months to come and I hope
you’ll mark your calendar to attend Escape
to Rushmore in the fall of 2015.

So, Just What Do We Do In Nord Stern??!
A brief synopsis of activities and events offered by your club, Nord Stern, and/or PCA or, just enough
info to pique your interest??!!
Autocross: A low-speed driving event, teaching one how to maneuver one’s car around a set course of
pylons on a closed circuit. Instruction is available, drivers compete against the clock. No modifications
to one’s car are necessary. Some safety equipment needed (helmet).
ClubTalk: E-mail listserv for member subscribers focusing on car issues and discussions as well as a
place to ask questions, get recommendations and comments. Also for last minute breaking news on
upcoming events and activities. See Nord Stern’s website for directions on how to subscribe and or
how to unsubscribe..
Concours: A setting where Porsches are displayed for general viewing and/or inspection competition.
Experienced judges evaluate the various models based upon cleanliness, overall condition and
authenticity. Note: Nord Stern conducts an ‘All Porsche Show’ at which cars are ‘shown’ but not judged.
Driver Training: A driving course designed to teach and enhance high speed driving skill and technique
on an actual race course. Training includes classroom sessions, on-track ‘exercises’ plus supervised
lapping sessions. A Pre-Requisite for Driver Ed participation and NOT to be confused with Driver
Education events. Driver Training includes both Novice and Intermediate level options. Check with
DT Chair for additional options.
Driver Education: High speed driving event on a closed-course racetrack (Brainerd, Blackhawk
Farms, Road America for example) where drivers are grouped according to prior lap times. Prior Driver
Training participation is required. Performance enhancements are frequently made (but not required!).
Parade Laps: Held during lunch at Driver Training events at closed-course racetracks, this controlled
environment with a pace car provides participants an opportunity to take street cars on the track at
highway speeds so that they can see what the course is like. Minors are permitted in state approved
restraints and with a signed parental release.
Time Trials: On course timed lap with controlled starts and exiting.
PCA Club Racing: Wheel-to-wheel competition between drivers who hold PCA club
racing licenses. There is a race class for every model Porsche. Safety modifications to
your vehicle required.
Rally: An event wherein a driver and co-driver complete a predetermined
route along open roads following a specific set of navigational instructions.
Can be a TDS (time-distance-speed) or a ‘fun’ rally.
Social: Organized gatherings of club members, affiliates and family
member to meet, eat and drink beverages! See our motto on pg. 3!
Tech Session: Casual educational session that span a wide range of
topics, from general maintenance, through Concours prep, performance
enhancements and general car/mechanical knowledge!

Nord Stern December 2014
From the Editor . . .
W
hile Prez Dave has now written
his very last column for Nord
Stern in his official role of
president, I hope we continue to hear
from him in the coming years! It’s a been
a pleasure working with him and I feel
so fortunate to share work in a club that
continues to involve many very committed,
passionate and above, very interesting and
fun people. Thank you, Dave, for all your
calm guidance this year, your willingness to
try some new things - including writing a
column! As the editor, I am so appreciative
of all members willing to do the ‘oldfashioned’ thing and put pen to paper.
You’ll note in this issue that several member
contributions are featured. The rest of Bob
Fleming’s last big adventure with his ‘64

driving’ that definitely highlight one of
the key reasons for being in a car club: the
opportunity to drive your vehicle with others
along a route that provides a few driving
thrills and skills with a dash of fun and
friendship thrown in!
As we move into the New Year do note
the club has a holiday party planned on
Feburary 7, a Saturday, in the evening at
the University Club. It should be fun and a
GREAT excuse for us to don our finery and
and leave those driving shoes and suits in the
closet. Details are being ironed out - but the
date and location are set! Be there!
So it’s with a resounding Happy Holidays
and best wishes for the coming New Year
that I end another set of 12 issues of Nord
Stern 2014.
continued from page 5
Now it’s time to close out my last
column as Nord Stern’s 55th President.
First . . . I’ll be transitioning into my 3-year
term on the Nord Stern Board. Second . . . I
won’t be going away as I’ll continue to act
as Registrar for track events and as a proxy
for continued Where’s the Prez destination
drives for President-elect Sabers if he so
desires to continue with this ad hoc social
gathering. Lastly . . . I said this in closing
in November’s column and I think it bears
repeating. I’m reminded nearly every day
that Nord Stern exemplifies PCA’s “It’s not
just the cars, it’s the people!” and I’d like
to express my gratitude to the membership
for making Nord Stern what it is; a group of
people willing to generously and charitably
help each other without question. It’s been
my pleasure to serve as your President this
year and represent Nord Stern in my travels.

Nord Stern December 2014
Rochester Labor Day Porsche Picnic 2014
by Jeff Boehm
L
abor Day started off with threatening
skies and scattered late morning rain
showers in Southest Minnesota but
that didn’t “dampen” the spirits of many
Nord Stern members. As the clouds cleared
and the sun came out so did the Porsches
and their families!
We had a nice turn out that included
several new members from the Rochester
area and a visit from our membership chair
Ed Vazquez and his wife Ali. BJ and I would
like to give a special thanks to Wanda
Prescher (1965 356 C owner) and her son
Derek for the use of their home (yard and
garage) once again for this years picnic.
Let’s hope that next year “Mother
Nature” is more cooperative and we have a
bigger turnout! Hope to see you here!
Nord Stern December 2014 11
The Bark and Beer Tour 2014: A Southeast Minnesota
Fall Color Drive
W
arning! This is not an official Nord Stern event! But it sure looks
like one!
Sunday morning October 12th, 2014. Our starting point was
Essex Park in NW Rochester, MN. The weather was sunny but cool, a perfect
day for a fall drive!
From Essex Park we traveled over 110 miles of SE MN back roads with
stops at Lark Toys in Kellogg, MN (http://www.larktoys.com) and Ferguson’s
Orchard on the north end of Lake City (http://morningsideorchard.com)
before making it to our lunch stop at The Jewel Golf Club in Lake City
(http://jewelgolfclub.com). This is normally a 35 mile drive from the park
to The Jewel.
The day brought a great collection of cars and people. Of the 21 cars,
15 were Porsches ranging from a 356 to a 2014 991 Turbo. This included a
928, a 944, a 951, a 968, a couple of 993s (both cabs) and a nice selection of
Boxsters, Caymans and Carreras. Also on hand were a 550 Spyder replica
(with Subaru power), a Camaro Z28, a Corvette, a BMW Z4, a Hyundai
Genesis R Spec Coupe and a 583 horsepower Mercedes SLS AMG. While
most of the people were from MN and Nord Stern members (don’t worry Ed
I think I rounded up a few new members for you) we did also have guests
from Decorah, Iowa and a couple Sioux Falls, South Dakota who have made
the tour for many years.
While the weather stayed pretty good for the most of the drive, it did cloud
up and we did have a few rain drops (and a Spyder replica with no top) but
they were short lived and didn’t damped any spirits or interiors too badly.
BJ and I would like to thank everyone who attended and extend a special
thanks to our club president David Anderson for joining us this year.
And just for a little extra fun… I designed a t-shirt that everyone could
(can) order to commemorate The Bark & Beer Tour 2014!
If you would like to attend next year please email us at jeffandbj@gmail.
com to get on our email list.
As a closing thought… If this would ever become an official Nord Stern
event we will always have “other” cars on the tour. Because as much as we
would like, not all of our friends can (or will) own Porsches!

I contact Further Performance
and invite them to join Nord Stern as an
advertiser which they did shortly before the
All Porsche Show in June. I asked Tristan
Henderson, owner, if he would be interested
in displaying his company at the All Porsche
Show which he willing agreed to do. I also
asked Tristan to evaluate my newly acquired
air cooled German vehicle to determine
maintenance needs as well as other issues.
He was extremely thorough, prioritized
the order of work to be done, providing
pricing and a work timeline including his
shops schedule for my work. He was right
on the money. Tristan and his employees
are professionally trained, experienced and
provide exceptional customer service. There
will be no disappointments!

In addition, their customer service was

They encountered an unforeseen issue

Monterey, 2013: The Skinny Wood Wheel Tour - Part 2
C
ontinued from the November issue
is the 2nd half of Bob Fleming
account of his last adventures with
his prized ‘64 911.
This drive had to be named. Over the
years some of my grand adventure drives
have names as a shorthand to when or
where the drive had taken place.
One prior trip, the “Black Vinyl Seat
Tour”, a Minneapolis to Southwest and
California drive including 115 degree
heat thru the Gila Bend Arizona desert,
110 heat at the Riverside International
Raceway, CA and a 112 degree jaunt thru
the Great Salt Flats of Utah. All the places
to take a non air conditioned car - with
BLACK Vinyl Seats on a summer drive.
The “Key Lime Pie Tour” - Midwest to
Daytona and on to the southern most tip
of the USA, Key West Florida. Mmmmm,
ate and drove our way around and thru
the delights of Florida.
Or the “Toronto Tour”. Mosport, Mont
Tremblant, delightful club race and drive.
This recent trip is named for the
instrument for contact to the car . . . the
steering wheel. A little back ground - the
wood wheel that is on TK has been in
Brett Johnson’s book on 911 Authenticity
because it is the only example of a factory
rivet experiment to hold the wood rim to
the 1964 aluminum frame. It is the only
one known to exist. And, yes it’s the real
deal, we did the CSI thing, the varnish
covering the inner aluminum exposed
frame and the rivets are the same color
and material.
Because of that specialness the wheel
has been wrapped in a leather cover for
the last 28 years. It’s wood color and
pristine condition is a time capsule. To
take a long distance drive with the skinny
steering wheel and a return to skinny tires
was a experiment in deja vu. This 1964
driving experience in one of the early
911’s with modern compound Vredestein
18

tires (which have good stick), is just a
thrill to enjoy.
S
aturday for us was the drive out to
the race track action at Laguna Seca.
We started with being registered for
the Porsche car corral and were directed to
the correct parking area just to the inside of
Turn 5. As we
approach we are
being guided to
be next door of
a 1950’s silver
356 - I park a
little wide so
am directed to
bump forward
and back but still
with ample door
opening room
for us both. My
hesitation, this
in no ordinary
356, it’s the 356 B, Carrera 2, (the four cam)
with current race livery driven to the event
and parked in the public area - reserved
Porsche cars only - but still public. Between
our two cars this is a million dollars of cars
just being parked. Judy and I introduce
ourselves to Herb and Ruth, and marvel at
the condition of their car, Herb notices we
have a car driven half way across the USA.
The smiles are mutual.
Later in the day Herb and I are talking to
what turns out to be a friend to both of us.
Afterwards the friend says Herb and Rose
showed another of his cars, last year and
were the peoples choice at the “Legends of
the Autobahn show”, with his 1952 Glocker
356 aluminum body racer. Both the car he
showed last year and the one they drove
today are track worthy and get “used”.
(Excuse me, but I’m way impressed by this
gentleman and the cars he enjoys).
Lunch with the group at the hospitality
tent, walking the pit area talking to friends
and admiring just too many race cars and
others. Up to the cork screw corner at the
top of the mountain to watch close racing
and the joy of loud cars making great
speed. Signatures from drivers of my youth.
Doesn’t get any better than this.
Simple dinner at a local restaurant and
a bottle of California wine and early to bed.
Sunday is to be a big day.
Sunday, we are up early in anticipation
of our first time to Pebble Beach. We have
been coached by some long time event
goers to get to the area early and follow the
directions thru the maze of roads to 17 mile
drive and take the courtesy event buses to
the gate. Within a half hour of arrival on
the peninsula we are parked down by the
shore drive, on the bus and walk into the
RetroAuto venders area. Pass by the large
open manufactures display areas. Stop for a
chat with one of the fellows, Sam Cabiglio
who finds, coordinated the restoration
and curator of collections for some pretty
influential collectors. Sam and Vicky are fun
people. One of his cars, the early yellow soft
window Targa is part of the Porsche factory
display. He had stopped by to check on the
car... I’m just gape mouthed at how striking
the car is. It’s owner has great taste.
Closer to the Pebble area, in a court
yard, are the concept show cars. Key to the
display are Aston Martin’s speedster, the
Rolls Wraith, something called a Laraki,
Cadillac even has a delightful car, Porsche
918 and more.
Nord Stern December 2014
We have yet to get
to the gate. Thru the
winding passageways
and streets. Thru the
gate and out onto the
show field. The cars
are placed in large
sweeping waves. Most
are placed facing the
same direction and
the large grille end of
the cars hold the most
spectators. Morning fog
and a cool temperature
is not deterring any of the enthusiasm for
the viewing of the cars. Waves of people
are now filing onto the field. The fashion
of the spectators is as diverse as the cars
themselves.
My task today (and a reason for this trip)
is to find the 50th anniversary showings for
two of the most prized of the early 911’s.
Today on this field are two of the 901
prototypes.
First is the prototype that was so favored
by the workers it held the name “barbarossa”
(later in the day a translation, that was new
to me, is passed along) “Red Beard”. The
car is serial

My Year-End Retrospective
Y
by Danielle Badler, Courtesy PCA National Newsletter Editor
eah, well, yet another year is
about to go bye bye. I know it’s
inevitable. But that doesn’t mean
I enjoy it.
Maybe there’s a way to come to grips
with growing older . . . if I dust off the
way-back machine and revisit those times
of yore, which have helped shape who and
what I am today.
I survived ownership of my first car,
just barely. It was a 1961 Ford Falcon,
just a complete piece of junk, given to me
by another family member, shortly after I
got my driver’s license. For free. I should
have known. I ended up giving it away to
someone else. Three-speed column auto.
Vinyl upholstery that, on a hot day, you had
to peel yourself from. All because, chances
are, the car was probably overheating, which
it did regularly, and is why a Clorox bottle of
water had been banging around in the trunk.
Handling? What handling? The thing
just tipped over, as soon as you thought
about rounding a corner. All you could do
was saw at the wheel, because there was no
steering feel, whatsoever.
I survived ownership of my second
car, a ’64 Triumph TR-4. There was the
night I was driving back to college on I-80
after Thanksgiving with a friend and it was
snowing lightly in the mountains of western
Pennsylvania. We had just filled up on gas,
and I remember shifting into third when,
whoa, the thing started sliding straight
toward the center guardrail.
I remember instinctively turning the
wheel to the right . . . and nothing happened.
Then I looked to the left, and saw a wall of
oncoming traffic. We continued to skid, into
the left lane . . . and suddenly the car gripped
the pavement and spun around . . . and we
had enough momentum to motor off.
Neither of us said a word for 20 minutes.
Then it was, “Do you know what just
happened?” “Yeah, we should be dead.”
I survived my third car, a ’68 VW Beetle.
Ah that swing-axle suspension. Diabolical.
Fortunately, I was saved when the car was
bashed in the middle of the night by a hit
and run, while innocently parallel parked.
I had it fixed and promptly sold it, to
one of my sisters, which is something I’m
not proud of.
And I didn’t tell her about how, after
a rain shower, water would collect under
the sunroof, so that, when you first stopped
short, it would pour out and drench you.
My first Porsche, a 914. On the Taconic
Parkway, heading up to Lime Rock from
New York, in hard rain, flat out, in that white
knuckle kind of groove you get, where you
go over a rise and the brain rages “Where
does the road go?” “Where does the road
go?” All the while passing other vehicles
which appear like mirages, out of nowhere,
in the spray.
I knew full well that the races would be
canceled. It was pre-marriage, I think. We
survived that day. The marriage didn’t.
My year in Lausanne, Switzerland, in
my Euro 924, at speed on the Autoroute
twice a day, morning and night. There’s
something about hopping into a Porsche, no
matter how crazy the work environment and
tearing home at speeds that would lock you
up, in the States. Talk about an emotional
unwinding mechanism.
Then there was the time I took a group
of people, including my boss and his wife,
for a pleasant drive to lunch in the Swiss
mountains. We were returning, and I really
wasn’t pushing hard, I swear, and she lost
it around a hairpin corner. Somehow, my
career survived.
Heading to a motel the night before a
job interview in suburban New York, in
my Carrera Targa. I was on the Interstate in
somewhere, New Jersey, when the “check
engine” light came on, and I realized the
temperature gauge was pegged.
I turned off the ignition, coasted off an
exit ramp and parked it, to be flat-bedded
back to my local dealer. Turns out it was a
sheared bolt, and a new one had to be sent
from Germany. I avoided grenading the
engine by a hair. Woke up real early the next
day, and drove another car to the interview.
Surprise, I didn’t get the job. But I survived.

3. Type of business?
We strive to provide our customers
with door-to-door auto transport
services. We offer both open and
enclosed shipping options.
4. Years in business?
Aline Transport has been in the
business of transporting cars since
2000 and is still growing strong.
5. Number of years as a Nord Stern
member and/or advertiser?
This is our first year as a Nord Stern
advertiser.
6. Why will Nord Stern members be
excited to do business with you?
We are also Porsche enthusiasts! We
have transported every shape and
size of Porsche ranging from the
1957 Speedster to the 2005 Carrera
GT. The first transport trip I ever
made was from Texas to Colorado
and included three Porsche
911s. During the last 14 years,
Aline Transport has established
a large customer base of luxury
automotive dealerships and
seasonal clients. In addition,
we serve hundreds of private
clients, including collectors, car
enthusiasts, military personnel,
high-profile athletes and
celebrities. We offer both open- and
enclosed-shipping options. Enclosed
auto transport means that the vehicle
is shipped in a fully enclosed car
carrier as opposed to an open carrier.
The main reason that some clients
choose an enclosed car carrier is to
avoid exposure to the elements and
any other potential vehicle hazards

doing so
8. My favorite PCA event is ...?
I haven’t experienced any yet but I
am sure that many tie for first place in
my book.
9. Nord Stern members would be
surprised to know that...?
We are a family-owned and operated
company located in Decorah, Iowa
and transport approximately 120
vehicles per month. My father is in
the auto wholesaling business, so
22
my sister and business partner Sarah
Christen and I grew up around fine
cars, including Porsches. Our journey
into the auto transport industry
began in Denver. In addition, I was a
member of the U.S. Army from 1997
to 2000. As a tribute to my fellow
brothers and sisters in the armed
forces, I offer discounted shipping
rates to all military personnel,
whether they are
on active duty or
retired veterans.
10.
When
I’m not at the
shop, you can
find me ... ?
When you’re
in the auto transport industry, there
is no such thing as a day off. It is a
good thing that I enjoy talking with
folks as I am constantly on the phone
with clients or dispatching our trucks.
I also jump into a truck every now
and then to give our drivers some
time off. In-between that, I spend
every chance I get with my family…
either watching football or attending
the many school activities in which
my children, nieces and nephews
participate.

A Ferry Tale - Porsche at Le Mans
by Ken Koop (Ken’s Corners) The Yellowstone Region - Old Faithful Newsletter, Courtesy PCA National Newsletter Editorial Archives
O
nce upon a time, in a land farfar away, a tiny German Auto
Manufacturer (actually Austrian
at the time, since they were still building
their cars at the foot of the Austrian Alps
in Gmund) was asked to participate in the
world’s most prestigious endurance auto
race; The 24-Heures Du Mans. It had only
been six years since WW II had ended
and Ferry Porsche wasn’t sure how the
French people would accept a German car
manufacturer and team at their race. The
Le Mans Organizing Committee assured
him that everything would be just fine. As
it turned out, they were right. The French
people adopted the little German team and
Porsche’s relationship with Le Mans had
begun. Their first entry was a diminutive
356 aluminum bodied coupe having 1.1
liters, only 44 HP and a top speed of 95
MPH. Entered in one of the lowest HP
classes, Porsche’s only goals were of
finishing the race and possibly taking a
class victory. When the race ended, they
had accomplished both of their goals. With
Porsche’s very first entry, a fire would be
lit, and although no one knew it at the time,
Le Mans itself would forever be changed.
In Formula 1 racing, Ferrari has been the
only auto manufacturer to have competed
in every season since the series has been in
existence. To this day, Ferrari is the backbone of F1 and is held in the highest esteem
by Formula 1 because of their longevity
and commitment to that series. In contrast,
Porsche has become as important if not more
important to Le Mans than Ferrari is to F1.
Ever since its first entry in 1951, Porsche
has had at least one car entered in every Le
Mans 24 HR race. Porsche has compiled
more overall victories (16) in its 55 years
of competition at Le Mans than the next
three manufacturers combined. Their class
victories (totaling 75), would out pace the
next ten automotive competitors combined.
28
Porsche has had more than 740 individual
cars that have competed at The Circuit de la
Sarthe, which averages almost 14 cars per
race. Lastly, there have been years, had it not
been for the Porsche entries, the LeMans 24
HR race would not have even taken place.
However, the relationship between Porsche
and Le Mans has not been all that rosy. In
fact, it is more of a love-hate relationship.
It seems that the Le Mans organizers love to
have Porsche cars attend the races, but they
hate to have Porsche win so often.
Even after building many different models
of cars for competition at Le Mans (most
notably the 550, RSK, RS60, 904, 906,
907, 908 and 910), it still took Porsche
nineteen years to achieve their first overall
victory (most of the aforementioned cars
were never intended to challenge for the
overall). In 1970, the mighty 917 finally
gave Porsche their long awaited win, with
the 917 going on to dominate Le Mans the
following year as well. With its 630 HP and
speed of over 240 MPH on the Mulsanne
Straight (locally known as the Ligne Droite
des Hunaudieres), the 917 had come a long
way since Porsche’s first 356 entry just 19
years earlier. Today, fans regard the 917 as
a legend; an icon for a whole generation of
powerful racing cars. It was because of its
incredible performance and the lack of other
cars being able to successfully compete
against it, that the ACO quickly mandated
engine changes that would eliminate the 917
from competition in 1972. Even though the
917 would not race again, there were still
many Porsches that would go on to compete
very successfully in the 24 HR classic (914,
924, 934, 935, 936, 944, 956, 961, 962,
GT1’s and the many derivatives of the 911).
Regulations changed once again in 1976 to
allow the new 934’s to compete in Group
4 and the Turbo-Charged 935’s to compete
in the Group 5 classes. The 935’s turned
out to be fast enough to challenge for the
overall win, even though they were not
intended to do so by the ACO/FIA. With
the new changes to the rules, the ACO
never imagined that the 935 in the Group 5
silhouette class (based on production cars)
would ever have a chance to win Le Mans
competing against the exotic prototypes. But
in 1979, the 935 achieved a first at Le Mans;
an overall win for a production based car!
Porsche at this same time also reentered the
newly formed Group 6 prototype class with
their 936 open cockpit car. They developed
the 936 in total secrecy and surprised
everyone when it was entered at Le Mans.
The 936 immediately became the car to beat,
winning in the 1976, 1977 & 1981 seasons.
During 1976 & 1977, Porsche had their
most rewarding victories in the company’s
history with wins in Groups 4, 5 and 6 plus
the overall victory at Le Mans.
The regulations changed again in 1982 when
the ACO introduced the new Group C closed
cockpit cars for competition. Porsche gladly
took up the challenge and developed the
beautiful 956. In 1983 Porsche finished in
nine out of the top ten places at the Le Mans
24 HR race. This prompted Porsche to put
out one of its now famous racing posters.
With the winning Porsche’s picture shown
on the poster and listing each of the top 10
finishers (only one not being a Porsche),
Porsche made an additional statement by
adding the caption “Nobody is Perfect”.
Although quite appropriate for the occasion,
the ACO was not impressed. Once again the
ACO felt they had to do something to stop
the Porsche juggernaut. They would change
the rules to prevent the 956 from competing
past the 1985 season. They now required
the manufacturers to have the driver’s feet
positioned behind the front axle for safety
purposes, feeling this would once and for
all put a halt to Porsche’s dominance. In
1986 Porsche simply redesigned the 956
Nord Stern December 2014
and morphed it into the 962. This caught
the Le Mans Organizers totally by surprise.
They never thought that Porsche would be
able to develop a new car quickly enough
to compete in the 1986 season. With its now
stretched wheel base and the first sports car
to be equipped with ground effects, the 962
became even more potent than the 956 it
replaced. There wasn’t a sports car on the
planet that could compete with it and they
continued to dominate Le Mans and every
sports car race the world over. In 1986,
Porsche finished once again with nine out of
the top ten places at Le Mans. Over a span
of 14 years, the 956 and its 962 stable mate
have established themselves as the most
successful racing models in the history of
international sports car racing. Porsche not
only continued winning at Le Mans, but at
every racing circuit they were competing. It
was during this time that the French coined a
now famous phrase, “Surviving the 24 hours
of Le Mans takes a very good car; winning
on the other hand, takes a Porsche.”
While participating in the prototype class,
Porsche also built, sold and raced a veritable
plethora of 911 derivatives represented
by the RSR, Turbo, 961, GT1, GT2 and
current GT3 models. They have continued
to totally dominate their classes ever since
the 911 was first developed and raced in
1963. Porsche also raced with great success
the 914, 924 and 944 models as well. In
1996, Porsche decided they wanted to
take a new approach and build a prototype
race car that more closely resembled their
street cars. They felt this would help their
marketing department sell more production
911’s. Porsche set off to develop their GT1.
The new GT1 used the basic engine block
shared with the Turbo and GT2 and it also
had the same stock front section (using the
steel monocoque body shell straight off the
production line and then truncating it behind
the driver’s seat) from the 993-911 Turbo
as well. This foundation allowed the car to
compete in the recently formed GT1 class.
Even though the GT1 was a mid-engine car,
it still was recognizable as a 911 and became
the foundation for a limited production street
car. It not only went on to win its class at
Le Mans, but in 1996 every single class in
the race was won by a Porsche. No other
manufacturer has been able to establish
such domination in all classes during a
single race. Porsche realized, however, to
compete against the top Mercedes, BMW,
Ferrari, Peugeot, Nissan, Mazda and the
Toyota teams; they needed a truly dedicated
sports prototype. The GT1 then evolved into
the all carbon fiber GT1 EVO for 1998.
The 1998 race season also represented the
50 year anniversary for Porsche building
automobiles. Therefore, winning Le Mans
would become the top priority for the racing

Electronic Stability Control
by Pedro P. Bonilla, GCR PCA
E
lectronic Stability Control is known
by many acronyms and names,
such as: AdvanceTrac, Dynamic
Stability Control (DSC), Dynamic Stability
and Traction Control (DSTC), Electronic
Stability Program (ESP), Vehicle Dynamic
Control (VDC), Vehicle Stability Assist
(VSA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC),
Vehicle Skid Control (VSC), Vehicle
Stability Enhancement (VSE), StabiliTrac
and last but not least, Porsche Stability
Management (PSM).
But what is it?
A vehicle’s Electronic Stability System
uses on board computers to control each
individual wheel’s brakes and assists the
driver in maintaining control of the vehicle
by keeping the vehicle headed in the
direction the driver is steering, even when
the vehicle nears or reaches the limits of
road traction.
When a driver attempts a sudden
corrective maneuver, for instance to avoid
a crash or because (s)he misjudged the
severity of a curve, (s)he may lose control
if the vehicle responds differently than
expected as it reaches the limits of road
traction than it does in ordinary driving.
This loss of control can result in either
the tail of the vehicle spinning out, or the
front of the vehicle plowing out.
As long as there is sufficient traction,
an experienced track driver could maintain
control in many of these conditions by using
countersteering (momentarily turning away
from the intended direction of the car) or ...
. . . as Doc Hudson Hornet (Paul
Newman) expertly explained to
Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson):
“turn right to go left” in the animated
movie Cars.
Right, Image courtesy of Pixar
Animation Studios
Generally, in panic situations with the
vehicle beginning to spin out of control,
average drivers would be unlikely to
countersteer like a race driver, to regain
control.
To help the driver in such a predicament,
Porsche Stability Management (PSM) or
any other form of ESC uses automatic
braking of the individual wheels to adjust
the vehicle’s heading if it departs from the
direction the driver is steering. Therefore
it prevents the heading from changing too
quickly (spinning out) or not quickly enough
(plowing out). ESC cannot increase the
available traction. It only affords the driver
the maximum possibility of keeping the
vehicle under control and on the road in an
emergency maneuver using just the natural
reaction of steering in the intended
direction.
of drive force is distributed to the outside
rear wheel, inducing an additional rotational
pulse (yaw movement) around the vehicle’s
vertical axis.
Some people complain that all of these
“nanny” controls are taking away the fun
of driving but at least in Porsche’s case,
you can switch off the function (PSM).
Well, almost. Porsche’s PSM remains set to
intervene if the vehicle is braked and ABS
assistance is required.
One great feature of PSM is brake
precharging. If you suddenly release the
accelerator pedal, PSM automatically
prepares for your next action: the braking
system is precharged so that the brake pads
are already in light contact with the rotors
and maximum braking power is achieved
But Porsche has gone way beyond the
requirements for ESC by the introduction
of PTV (Porsche Torque Vectoring)
for manual transmissions and PTV
Plus for cars equipped with Porsche
Doppelkupplung (PDK).
PTV and PTV Plus are optional
systems which increase the dynamic
performance and stability of the car by
varying the distribution of torque to the
rear wheels. These systems include a
mechanically locking rear differential.
Right: Images courtesy of Dr. Ing.
h.c.F Porsche AG
When the car is driven aggressively into
a corner, some brake pressure is applied to
the inside rear wheel. Thus, a greater amount
much sooner. When brake assist detects
a panic braking situation it generates the
optimal braking pressure required for
maximum deceleration. Neat stuff!
As part of a comprehensive plan to
reduce the serious risk of rollover crashes
and the risk of death and serious injury in
those crashes, The Federal Motor Vehicle
Safety Standards Rule No. 126 requires ESC
systems on all passenger cars, multipurpose

season. Second place would not be good
enough for this important anniversary year;
unless of course, the first place car was also a
Porsche. The Porsche Werks (Factory) team
delivered just that, a one-two overall win
against the other formidable competitors at
Le Mans and a perfect way to celebrate its
first 50 years.
Speculation for the future has it that the
RS Spyder will race at Le Mans in 2007.
Although competing in the LMP2 category
(not the fastest class), the Spyder still
has a great chance for another class and
who knows, possibly an overall victory.
Based on Porsche’s history at Le Mans,
the competition should be keeping one
eye focused on their rear-view mirror this
coming June!
Since its first race in 1951, Porsche is
the only sports car manufacturer that has
consistently supplied competitive racing
cars for private teams to purchase and race.
Porsche is now the most successful auto
manufacturer in international motorsports
and they build more racing cars than
any other brand as the world’s smallest
independent volume producer. Generally, if
there was a class that a Porsche competed
in, the chances were pretty good that they
would finish in the winners circle. The very
32
same goes for today’s cars. In at least two of
the years that Porsche competed in all of the
available classes, they went on to win five
out of those five classes (a feat unmatched
by any other manufacturer). Also over a
consecutive 24 year period of time at Le
Mans, Porsche has won the overall 16 times.
Porsche is the only car manufacturer that
will build and sell its race cars to a private
team and then have them compete not only
against other privately owned Porsches
but against the Porsche Factory team as
well. Winning the overall at Le Mans is
generally dominated by the large, well
funded Factory teams; with one exception-Porsche. There have been numerous
private teams who have won the overall
in a Porsche and because of this no other
manufacturer can claim so many non-Werks
Team victories. This is due primarily to the
reliability, toughness and competitiveness
of the race cars that they build. Porsche
takes the phrase “to finish first, first you
must finish” very seriously. They produce
cars that are tough enough to withstand the
rigors of endurance racing. This
not only applies to their race cars
but also to their production cars,
since 911 race cars are born on the
very same assembly line as their
street cars cousins. The quality,
reliability and performance that is
built into every Porsche sets them
apart from every other sports car
manufacturer.
So why is Porsche so committed to racing
at Le Mans? Simply because they enjoy it
so much! Being the most prestigious sports
car race in the world, Le Mans and Porsche
will remain inexorably linked. Porsche
needs a world class showcase for their cars
to perform and excel in. Le Mans on the
other hand, wants Porsche race cars to help
fill their field and they also need the throngs
of Porsche fans to fill the stands. They may
not love each other, but even after all these
years, they still need each other.

has been known in some circles as a
very active sportscar racer and rally/

credentials are solid, having won SCCA

in obscure classes, or did rallys in Europe,
so he is not as well known in this county as
he should be.
This book is not about Toly the racer,
but about Toly the unique individual (name
me another SCCA Runoffs Champion with

are discussed in detail, ONE OFF is a book
about the life and times of a very interesting
character; it shows Toly the raconteur rather
than Toly the racer. It is a collection of very
interesting and readable stories, told by a
self-depreciating, personable guy who has
had a very active and complex life, mostly
related to cars and competitive motorsports
events.
The parents of Toly and his two siblings
were expatriate Russians. Toly grew up
primarily in Oklahoma, but had ties to the
Russian film colony in SoCal, through an
uncle. His family was fairly well to do,
which gave him the opportunity to have his

his acquisition of a Carrera GS Speedster

to excel. Unfortunately, many attempt to
move into show business. We’ve all seen
some former athlete delivering lines with
stiffness worthy of a Formula 1 chassis,
but there are occasional successes. Here we
have one of the most spectacular. You see,
while the Porsche 917 has been called one
of the greatest racing cars of all time, this
particular example gained fame not on the
track, but as a film star.
The 917 shocked the motor racing world
when it appeared at the Geneva Motor Show
in March of 1969. Conceived and built in
great secrecy at the Porsche works, it was a
product of rule changes designed expressly
to eliminate its type from international
sports car racing. Alarmed by the speeds
(and perhaps the nationality) of the seven
liter Ford GT-40s and their counterparts
from Lola, the FIA decreed that for 1969
all prototype sports racing cars would be
limited to a maximum of 3 liter engine
displacement, and that “production” sports
cars would be allowed a maximum of five
liters. In this case “production” was defined
as a minimum run of 50 (later reduced to
25) cars. The thinking was that the many
privateers who were running Fords and
Lolas would still be allowed to compete
(albeit with smaller engines) since there
were easily 25 of each already in existence,
but that no manufacturer would be willing
to ante up the enormous cost to design
and build 25 copies of a new five liter
prototype racing car. They had significantly
underestimated the Porsche racing works
desire for victory.
In April of 1969, the FIA’s representative
was summoned to the Porsche factory and
was stunned by the sight of 25 917 coupes
lined up side to side outside the Werk 1
building. Though they most likely weren’t
very happy about it, the FIA had no choice

the coming season. Getting there
was only half the battle however,
and Porsche spent the better part
of the ’69 season sorting out the
new car.

it quite a handful for the drivers,

first hand. Each shape, curve or fitting is
special. One only - this is one very special
car.
The second “One and Only” red car is
parked right next to barbarossa, and is the
most fun car on this large and varied field.
It is a 901 (prior to being a 911). It has been
hand made. It shows 49 years of being a car.
It doesn’t have a roof... yes there is no roof,
never had one. There are fittings where many
of the possible roof’s or roof shapes “could”
have been. This is 13 360. People don’t
know what to call it - it doesn’t have a roof
so it might be a cabriolet -well, not really.
It eventually became the Targa... but it was
made before that name was put into use. The
ledge above the windshield has examples of
multiple try’s and attempts to make a smooth
transition and still have the bulk to allow a
secure attachment for a future fabric top - or
would it be something other than fabric? It
doesn’t have permanent attachment mounts
for the stainless hoop, which defined the
Targa for decades to come. This is a working
prototype. Raw. It shows the thinking and
examples the possible directions this second
model of 911 could, and would take for the
coming years. Seeing this car is like holding
the first light bulb with Edison’s finger prints
on the glass and
try to not leave
your prints.
(And what ever
you do don’t let
that guy with
the glass cleaner
near it. . . )
There is
also a side story
to this car, It’s
owner is Myron
Vernis, (whom
I’ve been in
conversation and exchanged calls for just
years - but this is our first meeting). Myron
likes special cars. He is automatically
attracted to cars like the 1950’s interpretation
of a open and closed car the Paxton designed
by noted industrial designer Brooks Stevens
built in fiberglass and powered by the 356
engine. It’s roof is removable and nests over
the trunk area, looking just as at home above
the belt line as below the belt line. These are
the cars Myron gets excited about. Many
years ago he got wind of the cabriolet/Targa/
roofless car. It has prototype Fuch’s wheels
and other parts indicating it was around
the development area for more than a few
years. An engineer must have taken it for a
short walk and it didn’t make it back to the
stable, saving it from it’s destined future of
being destroyed.
This prior owner of 13 360 finds himself
in conversation with a USA guy. Myron
has something that the engineer wants
and Mr. engineer has the prototype Myron
wants. The deal is struck - at least this is
my understanding of that negotiation - Mr.
engineer ships his car to the US, Myron
ships his car to Germany. No money changes
hands. Myron is shipping his prize 356 four
cam Carrera 2. Engineer is shipping one
of just two 901 prototypes. Even up - each
pays his own shipping. I’m thinking there
are two guys who have the largest smiles
in the world, each thinking this has got to
be the deal of the century... both are right.
I might be jaded but that four cam 356
is now a half to three quarter million dollar
car, the prototype more so. Myron even
brought the cutest “lid holder” at the event,
his daughter is here to share this historic
moment. And I’m on the grass of Pebble
Beach in 2013 getting to open lids and verify
it has all the special hand made parts that my
car and the other 232 cars have - just so cool.
There are many other cars on the Pebble
Beach field that get me excited, 1930’s
Astons and the 1950’s Ferrari’s. But this
being the celebration of the 50th year of
the 911, Pebble has invited examples of
outstanding 911, both street and racing cars,
and the two historically significant 901 cars.
We have to relish the presence and join in
the celebration to this noteworthy group of
Porsche cars.
The sampling of noteworthy cars
span most of the 50 years production and
touch upon some really stellar engineering
advancements that Porsche has blessed us
with. Turbo, did I mention the Turbo...five
of the displayed cars have them. And, Mr.
Roeder and Harman’s 1965

very little with it, finally selling it to Le
Mans winner Richard Attwood in 1978.
Attwood had the car repainted to match his
1970 winning car, and raced and displayed
the car rather infrequently until 2000. When
Attwood sold the car, it made its way across
the pond to Gunnar Racing in Florida where it
underwent a complete restoration, including
the return of the original Gulf livery.
022 passed through the capable hands
of our own Symbolic Motorcars who, if
the rumors are accurate, sold it to a certain
individual who once had a TV show “about

again for sale. Perhaps it’s time
start digging behind the couch for
loose change, though I doubt any
of our couches are that big.
Though 917 chassis number

has one of the most unique histories
of any purpose-built racing car.

Perhaps it is this lack of hard competition
miles that has preserved it as one of the
most original examples of a truly incredible breed. For that, not to mention the tour it gave
us mortals of the classic Le Mans circuit, we can be truly thankful.
