The Richmond Art Gallery’s School Art Workshops introduce students from Preschool - Grade 12 to the exciting world of contemporary art through interactive
gallery tours and hands-on art projects inspired by the gallery exhibitions. Join
us this year for a memorable field trip experience!

Duration: 1 hour
Cost: $80.00 per class

Our School Art Workshops develop visual literacy through critical

Close Listening
Close Listening brings together the work of four artists who are experimenting with new approaches to painting and abstraction. Collectively,
they explore the medium of paint through non-traditional techniques,
including assemblage, sculpture, video and installation, while challenging the definition of the act of painting. This exhibition was curated by
Ola Wlusek and organized and circulated by the Ottawa Art Gallery.

Art Workshop:
Painter’s Lab: Experiments with paint!
Preschool – Primary
Intermediate
Swipe, drip, splatter, and stipple…
these are just a few of the many
ways to paint! We discuss a variety of
painting techniques and encourage
students to experiment while creating an abstract painting that showcases their creativity.
How a painting is made can be
just as important as what it looks
like. The importance of the artist’s
process is explored through examination and discussion of the gallery
artworks. Gathering ideas from the
unique painting methods they have
observed, students experiment with
paint to create an abstract painting.

Greg Girard: Richmond/Kowloon
Cities are complex, constantly evolving spaces, and this exhibition examines the growth and cultural complexity of Richmond, BC and Kowloon
Walled City, Hong Kong. Greg Girard’s photographs illuminate the daily
lives of the inhabitants of both cities, and explore how their diverse backgrounds blend and transform both Richmond and Kowloon into unique
places.
Art Workshop:
Cityscapes with Shape and Texture
Preschool – Primary
Intermediate
Shapes and textures are everywhere
in the city, from soaring towers to
curving arches, and boxy rough brick
to shiny, smooth glass and metal. While creating a cityscape collage
with shape and texture, students will
learn about architectural forms and
materials.
Students unleash their inner architect
and design a city exploring the materials and structural forms of the built
environment. Combining shape and
textures, students create a cityscape
collage inspired by the unique forms
found in Girard’s photographs.
