Inspiration
through
information
from the Director
Lawrence Ostrowski
This April concludes the Sesquicentennial
Celebration of the American Civil War across the
country. Here at the library we had a number of
programs on related topics beginning in 2010 and
have displayed our Civil War materials at the Fisk
Farm Festival for the last four years. Library staff
participated in the creation of the Oakland County
in the Civil War Map, produced by the Oakland
County Pioneer and Historical Society and
displayed in the library. I enjoyed being part of
the group of individuals who gave direction to
the state efforts to promote “Michigan in the
Civil War.” Local teen Civil War buffs assisted me
in creating a miniature battlefield diorama for
the Fisk Farm Festival from
2011 to 2014. It will seem
strange in the future months
to not be doing something
remembering this period in
American History.
On a personal note, I
recently received recognition
as Optimist of the Year by the
local Huron Valley Optimist
Club for 2013-14. The club is
focused on serving youth and they noted my efforts
in the club, at the library, and other organizations in
the area to assist youth in a variety of endeavors.
Larry Ostrowski, Director
This spring White Lake Township will join the ranks of other Detroit area
communities and feature art reproductions courtesy of the Detroit Institute of Arts
(DIA). From April to July of 2015 a dozen or so pieces will be on display outside
the Library, in parks, and on buildings throughout the Township. The library staff’s
“enthusiastic” participation request for White Lake was recognized and noted by the
folks at the DIA.
The Library is partnering with the DIA, the Parks and Recreation Committee of
White Lake Township, and the local arts community to plan activities related to the
works on display. Efforts will be made to use walking paths in the Township to make
viewing the art part of a pleasant recreational experience. We hope many White Lake
residents will put this program on their bucket list of things to do in 2015.
Friends of the White Lake Township Library
is a growing association of people who love libraries,
reading, books, volunteering and raising money to
enhance library services. Membership forms are
available at the Library and at whitelakelibrary.org
