Abstract:
This collection is a mixture of records from both the older, original Flemington
Children’s Choir School (1895-1958) and the newer, revived version (1980-2000) that
functioned as an extension of the original “Chorus of the Alumni.” It contains a series of
administrative and a series of operational records from both versions of the school. There
is a series of various items of historic interest from the original version of the school and
a small series (two folders) of multimedia performances of the original choir. The largest
single portion of the collection is a series of photographic images that capture many of
the individuals that were involved with the school between 1895 and 1958. The bulk of
the group includes graduation photographs, group posed portraits and individual portraits.
An index is provided for almost 500 named individuals that appear in images in this
collection.
ORGANIZATIONAL NOTES:
The Flemington Children’s Choir School was founded in 1895 by Elizabeth Van Fleet
Vosseller and Elizabeth Hopewell. The primary purpose of the Choir School was to train
the junior choirs of various Flemington churches, including the Baptist, Catholic,
Episcopal, Methodist, and Presbyterian, and they provided much of the funding for the
school. The first graduation was held in 1907, and the school continued in operation until
the last class graduated in 1958.
Until 1920, the Choir School mainly operated out of the Flemington Presbyterian Church,
and this was also the site of the graduation exercises through 1958. In 1920, a second
floor studio in a building on Higgins Alley (now Chorister Place) was converted to house
2
the school. In 1927, this building was completely renovated and updated to be the
permanent home of the Choir School.
The Choir School was a vibrant and active participant in the Flemington community.
The yearly graduation often featured as many as 200 Choristers and 150 members of the
“Chorus of the Alumni.” Many other concerts were held by the school, both inside and
outside of formal church services. The school started caroling through the streets of
Flemington on Christmas morning in 1909, and also participated in the town Tree
Lighting Ceremony.
Although a Flemington institution, the Choir School’s impact was felt far beyond the
town. Elizabeth Van Fleet Vosseller, through her work with the Choir, became a
nationally known and respected figure in the world of Choir Schools. She was nationally
recognized as an authority on the voice of young boys. Her books and other publications
that illustrated her teaching and organization plans for junior choirs were considered
foundational for religious musical programs and featured many examples used with the
Flemington Choir School. She was often considered “the foster mother of all children’s
choirs in America,” and the Choir School in Flemington enjoyed a brief national fame
that was almost as bright as hers.
Miss Vosseller directed the Choir School until her death in 1938. Elizabeth Hopewell
continued as Director until 1945, when she was succeeded by Sara Alvater. She, in turn,
was succeeded by Mrs. Frank Lott until the school closed in 1958. In 1959 the
Westminster Choir College of Princeton attempted to reactivate the school and
reorganize, but the lack of support by the original supporting churches, and the
development of musical instruction in public schools led to little public interest.
After the school closed in 1958, it was used for some time as a place of instruction for
private music tutors. In 1980, the operation of the Choir School entered a period of
renaissance. The Board of Trustees, which had been long dormant, was revived and
reorganized; the Choir School Building was donated to the County of Hunterdon and
restored as a historical landmark; and the school began operating again as a center of
cultural and musical appreciation.
Throughout the decade of the 1980’s, and into the 1990’s, the revived operation, mainly
through the interest and efforts of concerned living alumni, provided a series of musical
events and sponsored scholarships for local students. As the millennium turned,
however, the number of living alumni dwindled and interest in the school’s operations
waned again. In October 2009, the remaining trustees released the County of Hunterdon
from their building operations; and in 2010 the Trustees dissolved and released the bulk
of their remaining records to the Hunterdon County Historical Society.

SCOPE AND CONTENT:
This collection is divided into 5 series. The first series deals with administrative records
from the Choir School. It includes a group of minutes and administrative subject files
that are mostly from the second period of the Choir School, but also an interesting group
of roll books (enrollment books) from the original version of the school.
The second series relates to school operations. The first subdivision, correspondence, is
mainly from the revived choir school. However, the lesson plans, music appreciation
files, and sheet music are all from the original school and were most likely part of
Elizabeth Van Fleet Vosseler’s teaching materials.
The third series concerns the history of the school, and includes a variety of materials
from both main operational time periods of the school’s existence. Concert literature,
yearbooks, newsletters, awards, personal records, scrapbooks and news clippings are all
represented here.
The fourth series is a rich collection of photographic images that significantly documents
both the activities of the school and its students. The collection has an unusually high
number of identified individuals and places. Following the finding guide, there is an
alphabetical index of the names of individuals who are identified as being present in the
photographs of this collection along with the number of the image(s) in which they are
said to appear.
The fifth series is a small collection of sound recordings for the School. One CD has a
record of the Graduation Exercises of 1954, while the other CD (a 2 CD set) is
unidentified as to the performance and date.

Index of Named Individuals in Photographic Images
Flemington Children’s Choir School Collection
Collection No. 88
Arranger’s Note: The following index denotes individual names that have been identified
as subjects in photographic images within this collection. In a few cases, particularly for
individual portraits, the identification is positive.
In many of the images, particularly those of groups or graduation classes, a list of names
is provided with the image. The list of names is not necessarily arranged in the subject
order within the image. Also, in many of the graduation class images, the list of names
given is for the entire graduating class, and the number of subject names may not match
the number of subjects in the image.
For several of the graduation and other group images, the list of names for that image
also includes other information, such as a location or address. It is not known when this
information was captured, although it is certain that it was at a later date than when the
images were taken. Therefore, it is possible that the addresses or other information about
the subjects may have been recorded years after the images were made, and may not be
consistent.
The references after each name (and information, if any) are for the Px number of the
image(s) in which the subject’s name is identified. The Px number must be matched with
the correct folder in the finding guide above to retrieve the correct image.
