Essay Quiz Answers
1. A friend at the local film school needs a new keyboard and external hard drive. What advice
can you give her about the connection style for each of these devices?
Answer: For the keyboard, either PS/2 or USB is recommended as they don’t come with
FireWire interfaces. A keyboard works fine on Low-Speed USB, so no Hi-Speed USB
considerations are necessary. As for the external hard drive, a Hi-Speed USB connection
would be fine for normal usage, but your friend is a film student and may be involved with
transferring large digital video files, so a SuperSpeed USB hard drive would be better. She
would have to make sure her computer supports the connection, and if it doesn’t, she should
purchase and install an expansion card to provide the ports.
2. Dylan is excited because he just got a new USB digital camera. He tried to install it on his
laptop, but the computer doesn’t recognize it. He’s called you for help. What will you tell
him?
Answer: First, Dylan needs to make sure that the USB ports are enabled in the CMOS setup.
Then he needs to install the driver that came with the camera before he attaches the camera to
the USB port.
3. Ken asks for your help because he is always forgetting his Windows password. What can you
recommend to make logons easier for him?
Answer: As Ken is not capable of remembering his password, he may benefit from an
alternate authentication method such as biometric authentication. He should invest in a USB
fingerprint scannerand make sure to get one that comes with the appropriate software to
log on to Windows upon successful recognition.
4. Sandra’s always trying new video games. She usually plays role-playing games like World of
Warcraft, but a friend bought her a new flight simulator. She wants to get the most out of the
experience. What device should she get to enhance her experience? How should she set it up?
Answer: For flight simulators, a joystick will provide the most control, though a gamepad
will work too. To configure the game controller, open the Game Controllers applet

(Windows XP/Vista) or Devices and Printers (Windows 7). Open the properties for the
device, and then configure and calibrate whatever settings are available for that controller.
5. The new head of sales is frustrated because when she tries to use her keyboard, letters
continue to print across the screen even if she quickly taps a key, resulting in messages that
llllooooooookkkk lllliiiikkkkeeee tttthhhhiiiissss. How can you walk her through fixing this
problem over the phone?
Answer: If letters are repeating too quickly, her keyboard repeat delay is set too short. She
should navigate to the Control Panel and double-click the Keyboard applet. On the Speed tab,
she should drag the Repeat delay slider to the left and then test her setting by typing in the
test area before clicking OK.
