Deli Man: The Movie Saturday, January 24, 7:30pm,
St John’s High School
For some, delicatessen food is close to a religious experience
- corned beef, kreplach, kishke, and matzah ball soup! Deli Man:
The Movie, examines 160 years of culinary tradition, from New
York, to Chicago, to San Francisco and the obsessed proprietors
and fanatics who are keeping hot pastrami hot!
Above and Beyond: The Birth of the Israeli Air Force
Sunday, January 25, 9:30am light breakfast 10am film,
The Willows at Worcester, Great Room.
In 1948, a group of mostly American Jewish World War II pilots
volunteered to fight for Israel in its War of Independence. Called
“Machal” – “volunteers from abroad” - they helped turn the
tide of the war that threatened to annihilate Israel at the very
moment of its birth. Produced by Nancy Spielberg, younger sister
to Steven, this film celebrates the pilots who laid the foundation
for the Israeli Air Force.

Mr. Kaplan Tuesday, January 27, 7:15, The Willows at Worcester.
Jacob Kaplan lives an ordinary life in Uruguay. Like many of his
Jewish friends, he fled Europe for South America during World
War II. But now, turning 76 and taking stock, he is fed up with his
humdrum life, ailing health, and family’s lack of interest in its own
heritage. An unexpected opportunity for salvation comes along in
the form of a quiet, elderly German beach bar owner, whom Mr.
Kaplan believes to be a Nazi war criminal.

In September 1995 the Joyful Singers,
under the direction of Christine Bergquist,
became an integral part of the JCC family.
They would pick a program at the beginning
of the year and rehearse once a month. In
the spring, I would line up nursing homes,
rest homes, and the lunch out program
and the group would go on tour [singing]
to make people happy. Unfortunately, the
group had begun to shrink and reached a
point this fall where there were not enough
participants to continue the program. Those
that were still available were very sad and
would love to get back together. Anyone
who loves to sing and also loves to entertain others should contact me, Director of
Volunteer Services at 508 756 7109 ext.
273. Emails are also welcomed at sgranoff@
worcesterjcc.org. I am looking forward to
hearing from some music lovers!
Children will fall in love with music and
movement! They will experience the joy
of moving to choreography that lets them
master moves quickly with a certified Born
to Move instructor. It’s original….it’s fun
… it lets them shine!

Celebrating the Jewish Year
- Tu B’shevat
Tu B’shevat is the New Year of the Trees.
This year Tu B’shevat is celebrated on
Wednesday, February 4. Its name means “the
fifteenth day of (the Hebrew month) Shevat.
On this holiday we celebrate the first signs
of spring in Israel, where trees are just beginning to show their
new buds, even though in North America it is still winter! We
celebrate Tu B’shevat by planting trees in Israel through the
Jewish National Fund (JNF), or here in our communities.
We can have a Tu B’shevat
Seder, tasting a variety of
fruits, nuts and wines (juices).
Tu B’shevat is a wonderful
opportunity to think about
the environment and care for
the earth (The Chocolate Chip
Challah Activity Book).
The preschool will be planting
parsley and other plants indoors.
