FROM THE PASTOR
“MERRY CHRISTMAS” - We’re still greeting one another with
these words because Christmas is a Season. The prophetic or
counter-cultural aspect of being connected to Jesus is vividly
expressed in our rather subdued and somber pre-Christmas
gatherings followed by our rather bright, joyful and extended
post-Christmas celebrations. Today we continue our celebration
and our unpacking of the mystery of the Messiah's entering
human history with the Feast of the Holy Family.
A Pregnant Moment
Nine months from now, the world will be coming to Philadelphia to focus on the gift of family
life and how this basic blessing can be strengthened as well as how those who are without the
support of family can be supported and included. This global gathering celebrating the
importance of the family carries such weight that Pope Francis will be coming both to endorse
and to be part of this eighth World Meeting of Families.
The Vatican’s Pontifical Council on the Family, along with our own Archdiocese of
Philadelphia, have prepared a number of resources to help us get ready to participate fruitfully
in the WMOF, and I encourage each of our members and each of our families to take
advantage of these excellent resources.
Holy Family School
As we celebrate today the Feast of the Holy Family, we remember especially our dedicated
principal, faculty, staff of Holy Family School who serve our families throughout the year.
We are blessed through Holy Family School and we pray that HFS will be blessed in the New
Year. We acknowledge also our parishioners who contribute a subsidy to each student
attending HFS.
Fr. Heim, Deacon Giblin, Sr. Marie Rose Gibson RSM, Sr. Rose Marie Martell, MSBT and I
wish the blessings of a happy, healthy, and holy New Year to all of our parishioners. We pray
that each one of us will be open to the grace God is offering us in the Year of Grace 2015.
NEW EYES FOR NEW YEAR’S DAY - When we are gathered by Christ for Mass this
Thursday, we will be invited to enter into The Mystery via three liturgical lenses specific to
January 1st, namely:

WORLD DAY OF PEACE 2015—SLAVES NO MORE, BUT BROTHERS AND SISTERS
For the 2015 World Day of Peace this Thursday, January 1, Pope Francis
challenges all of us to recognize every other person as a brother or sister with Godgiven dignity. Such recognition, he says, will lead to peace.
When we recognize the dignity of others, we will feel compelled to work for an end
to all that exploits and enslaves them, such as human trafficking, trade in migrants
and prostitutes, exploitation, slave labor, and the enslavement of women and
children. These things, Pope Francis says, are a fatal running sore on the flesh of Christ.
To address these assaults on the dignity of our exploited and enslaved brothers and sisters, we must
assist victims and address the problems and issues that create conditions ripe for exploitation.
Catholics in the United States can join the U.S. Catholic bishops and Catholic Relief Services as they
work to help victims of exploitation and slavery and address root causes, such as poverty and lack of
opportunity, conflict, corruption, demand in developed nations for services of the sex trade and forced
labor, poor regulation of industries most susceptible to trafficking (such as the agricultural, domestic,
hospitality, and service industries), and lack of anti-human trafficking laws and enforcement of such
laws where they do exist.

NATIONAL MIGRATION WEEK 2015: JANUARY 4-10
As we remember Joseph, Mary and Jesus were refugees who migrated to a foreign land
(Egypt), the Catholic Church in the USA will celebrate National Migration Week starting next
Sunday.
The theme this year is, "We are One Family Under God," which brings to mind the
importance of family in our daily lives. This reminder is particularly important when dealing with
the migration phenomenon, as family members are too often separated from one another. For

refugee families fleeing persecution, and provide them

UPCOMING EVENTS
NEW HOURS
A SUNDAY SCHOOL PROGRAM
will be offered at St. Ann’s for
children aged 3 and 4 beginning
February 8 through March 29.
The class will be held in Holy
Family School’s Pre-School room during the 9:30 AM
Mass and will last one hour or when Mass is over.
Parents/guardians may drop off their child before
Mass and then pick up their child at the end of Mass.
Even though the class is only one hour, a variety of
lessons and activities will be taught each week. The
main focus of the program will be to teach the
Sunday Gospel message, which will help create the
foundation for preschoolers to begin their lifetime of
learning about their faith. The fee for eight classes is
$35. Children need to be potty-trained before the first
class. Spots are limited so please register early. If
you should have any questions or you would like to
register, contact Madelyn O’Hara at 610-639-0923 or

NEW HOURS - As of January 1, St
Ann Church will be open Monday
through Friday from 7:00 AM until
3:00 PM, with extended hours on
Wednesday for Eucharistic
Adoration. The Church will not be
open on Saturday.
EPIPHANY – Next Sunday we will
celebrate the Solemnity of the
Epiphany of the Lord. Epiphany
means manifestation. Is the Lord
manifest to us?
How? When?
Where? In whom? With whom? Is
there something we need to contribute to the
encounter in order to perceive God’s presence and
action?
VIETNAMESE MASS & SOCIAL – Fr. Peter Quinn
will preside at Mass for the Vietnamese Community
next Sunday at noon in St. Ann Church followed by a
social in the Church Hall.

PROGRAM - St. Ann’s is pleased to
announce the beginning of an exciting,
new DVD ministry for men and women
who have suffered from divorce: The
Catholic’s Divorce Survival Guide. The twelve-week
program features thirty-minute DVD presentations
each week that cover topics of shock, denial, anger,
grief, guilt, forgiveness, money, the courts, the kids,
the ex-spouse, annulment, dating, sexuality,
spirituality, remarriage or staying single, and much
more.
Experts in the series include some of the best and
brightest teachers, counselors, and authors in
Catholic media: Rose Sweet (series producer and
author of Healing the Divorced Heart), Dr. Ray
Guarendi (Catholic psychologist, author, and EWTN
talk show host), Fr. Mitch Pacwa (EWTN host and a
child of divorce), Fr. Donald Calloway (Catholic priest,
popular speaker and child of divorce), Christopher
West (theologian and teacher of Pope John Paul II’s
Theology of the Body), and Fr. Steve Porter, a
Catholic priest and seasoned spiritual director. The
DVD series also includes Catholic men and women
who share their gut-wrenching but inspiring stories of

SPECIAL COLLECTION – Archbishop
Chaput has asked us to cooperate with
an initiative from the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops to
support the work going on within the Church to combat
the ebola virus. All funds with go to Catholic Relief
Services (CRS) to:
General: spread information on how to avoid
contracting the virus
Liberia: reopen and bring to full capacity a major
Catholic health facility that closed when many
of the staff died of ebola.
Sierra Leone:
support efforts to bury the
dangerously infectious bodies of the deceased
in a safe manner that respects all customs and
cultures.
We will take up this special collection for the relief of
those suffering from ebola on the weekend of Sunday
January 11.
We have placed special yellow “EMERGENCY
RELIEF” envelopes near the doors of our worship
sites, and we ask you to use one of these envelopes if
you are able to contribute to this effort.
