FROM THE PASTOR COMING TO SEE, PART 1 – I frequently hear parents say how they are coming to see the truth of what they had heard all their lives, namely, that their children are gone from home before the they (the parents) know it. COMING TO SEE, PART 2 – About 25 years ago I heard that the purpose of Lent is Baptism. While it sounded true to me, I was not then able to see how it was true. I am now beginning to grow into this truth. In our baptism, we were sunk into Christ so that Christ might sink into us, become part of us, become even the very heart of us. Most of us were relatively unconscious when we were sacramentally sunk into Christ at the baptismal font, and the point is for us to become progressively more conscious of and conformed to Christ as we go through life. ANNUAL RENEWAL – For this reason our Tradition invites us each Easter Sunday, after having heard the Good News of the Resurrection for the first time —as a 7 year old, or 23 year old, or 55 year old, or 92 year old---to stand on our own two feet and to make our own (as consciously as we are able at our current point in life) the Promises that were made for us at our Sacramental Baptism. Since this is such a big deal, our Tradition has developed an entire season called Lent to help us prepare for this annual Renewal of our Baptismal Focus and Commitment. LENT: GLOBAL Christ calls us to grow in grace throughout our lives and so become the kind of persons who are able to see God and who want to accept the invitation to be with God eternally. And so we live each day on the road, open to re-penting, to re-thinking what matters and adjusting our behavior accordingly. Such penitential living does not begin in Lent and is not confined to Lent. During Lent we intensify or “take up a notch” our practice of the daily penitential actions of prayer, fasting and works of charity. Further, during Lent we practice such instruments of conversion and transformation in a more visibly communal manner with our sisters and brothers in the Body of Christ. LENT: GLOBAL & NATIONAL The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to participate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended. All are encouraged to participate in Catholic Relief Services “Rice Bowl” which has aided many hungry persons here in the Archdiocese as well as countless others throughout our nation and our world. You may pick up materials for this excellent Lenten Program in any of our three worship sites. For more information visit CRSRiceBowl.org. LENT: LOCAL The 2015 Archdiocesan Catholic Charities Appeal has begun and each of us bear a measure of responsibility for helping the Light who is Christ shine forth through our communal efforts on behalf of our neighbors throughout the five counties of the Archdiocese. May others “see goodness in our acts and give praise to our heavenly Father” (Matthew 5:16). All funds on Ash Wednesday will go to our Parish Charity Fund and all donations received through our Parish Poor Boxes this Lent will go help The House – Phoenixville Women’s Outreach located right here in our Borough. 1 026Ann FROM THE PASTOR, cont. LENT: PAROCHIAL For many years our Parish Stewardship Council has developed an annual Lenten Parish Renewal of Focus, Commitment and Method with such measures as a kick-off Sunday, an annual theme and logo with coordinated handout material, parishioner testimonies within Sunday Masses and often offering a Parish Ministry Fair. Due to a number of recent staff changes this valued program will be on hiatus as we regroup this year. SATURDAY MASSES - We will be able to offer morning Masses in our parish on Saturdays this Lent. Masses will be at 8:30 AM in Church most Saturdays, but on February 28 the Mass will be in Chapel at 9:00 AM. PRACTICAL HELP - Through the generosity of one of our families, we are able to make available the 2015 edition of The Little Black Book, a Lenten devotional aid which is very popular in many parishes across our country. Pick up a copy as you leave Mass today. WORLD MEETING of FAMILIES “The Pope is coming to Philadelphia!” Not. Pope Francis is coming not so much to Philly as he is coming to the World Meeting of Families which will take place in our city next September. These global gatherings are so important that Popes typically attend these events in person. And as we all know, in order for someone to be present in person that person needs to be present in his or her body. “Person” and “Body” are inseparable. THEOLOGY OF THE BODY Last summer I attended the International Theology of the Body Congress in Philadelphia and since then I have taken two courses and made one retreat sponsored by the Theology of the Body Institute. I am becoming increasingly convinced that St. John Paul II’s teaching called “The Theology of the Body” (TOB) has something extremely valuable to offer not only our Church but also our world, and that by delving into this teaching our parishioners can prepare well not only to participate in September’s World Meeting of Families but also to enter into the “New Evangelization” which recent Popes have been promoting. A Lenten Program in St. Ann Parish Last October, Bill Donaghy gave an introductory talk on TOB and last Advent Meghan Cokeley gave a presentation titled “Theology of the Body in a Secular World.”. This Lent I have made arrangements with the Theology of the Body Institute to have Bill Donaghy give a full day presentation delving more deeply into TOB on Saturday March 14 from 9:00 to 4:00 PM in St. Ann Chapel. The program fee will be $30/person or $50/couple. Morning coffee, snacks and beverages will be provided. See our parish homepage for more details. For more information or to register contact [email protected] or 610-639-0923. So, What the Heck is TOB? First, I’d say “come and see” by joining me for at least a part of the day, on March 14. That said, TOB has been described as “a catechesis on the authentic Christ-centered study of our humanity in the image and likeness of God” in which St. John Paul II teaches that the Creation of human beings recorded in Genesis was so that the human body could make visible the sincere gift of self that is the communion of Persons in the Most Holy Trinity through the two-in-one-flesh union of Adam and Eve.” TOB reveals the Song of the Trinity transposed into a key that we can hear and sing. Through the lens of TOB the invisible beauty of the Trinity becomes visible in the love of husband and wife. Our masculinity and femininity are theological, that is, they are saying something about God and about authentic human life. Come and see, and then at the end of the day on March 14, let me know if these words from Hans Urs Von Balthazar make sense to you: “Before the beautiful—no, not really before but within the beautiful—the whole person quivers. He not only 'finds' the beautiful moving; rather, he experiences himself as being moved and possessed by it.” 2 026Ann THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 15, 2015 THE SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SUNDAY The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time 8:00 AM Mass 10:00 AM Service 12:05 PM Service 6:30 PM Mass All in Chapel 7:30 AM Mass in Chapel 9:30 AM Mass in Chapel 11:30 AM Mass in Chapel 6:00 PM Mass in Chapel 9:30 AM - Children’s Liturgy (602) 9:30 AM - Sunday School (HFS Pre-School) 10:45 AM - PREP K-6 (School) 12:00 PM - Vietnamese Mass (Church) and Social (Church Hall) KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Lenten Crab Cake Sale - The Knights will distribute order forms at the end of all Masses this weekend; orders may be placed on February 21 and 22; scheduled pick up is February 26 between 4:00 and 6:00 PM in St. Ann Church Hall.
