ANOINTING OF PEOPLE WHO ARE SICK - In the event of an emergency contact the Rectory at any time. Anointings can be requested before a planned hospital visit. FROM THE PASTOR MERRY CHRISTMAS! - Our annual celebration of the Incarnation is not completed until today’s feast when we fast-forward from the infant in the manger to the man in the river. What does this plunging (baptidzein in Greek) of Jesus by John into the Jordan have to do with Christmas? Each Christmas we celebrate God's taking the plunge into humanity. The point of the Incarnation is not just that God is here in Christ to be with us (“Emmanuel”) but also that God in Christ is with us to do something for us that we cannot do for ourselves (“Savior”). The Word-made-flesh-and-blood has something to accomplish. This annual celebration of the Baptism of the Lord celebrates "the incarnation of the Incarnation" as the Messiah plunges into his mission. Everyday, but especially in each Sunday Eucharist, we are called to allow our little daily plunges to become incorporated into the one big saving Plunge of Jesus. We are called to be ministers of the Mystery, the Paschal Mystery, the Paschal Plunge of the Christ. Through our own baptism, each one of us is now "in Christ" and now as members of His Body, our actions can become part of His ONCE AND FOR ALL ACTION rendered available for us throughout the Sundays of our time on earth. The entertainer Jimmy Durante used to say, "Everybody wants to get into the act!" The point of Liturgy is to waken us to Christ and to invite us to want to have our actions get into, become part of, be incorporated into his Act: THE ACT. When the song of the angels is stilled; When the star in the sky is gone; When the kings and princes are home; When the shepherds have returned to their flocks— The work of Christmas begins: To find the Lost, To heal the Broken, To feed the Hungry, To Shelter the Homeless, To Lend Strength to the Weak, To release those in Bondage, To rebuild the neighborhoods, To bring peace among people, To make music in the heart. WELCOME to Fr. Kail Ellis, O.S.A. from Villanova University who has joined Fr. Heim and myself in leading our Sunday morning Masses. January 18-25, 2015 is the annual observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The theme chosen for 2015 is Jesus said to her, “Give Me A Drink.” (John 4: 7). Throughout 2015, join Christians everywhere in praying “that they may all be one.” Christian Unity Prayer God, spring of living water, Make of us witnesses of unity through both our words and our lives. Help us to understand that we are not the owners of the well, And give us the wisdom to welcome the same grace in one another. Transform our hearts and our lives So that we might be genuine bearers of the Good News. And lead us always to the encounter with the other, As an encounter with you. We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ, In the unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 1 026Ann January 2015: Chapter 3: The Meaning of Human Sexuality In order to help us prepare for the World Meeting of Families and the visit of Pope Francis, a catechism on family life entitled, Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive, has been prepared. Each month, our parish is reflecting on one chapter from this catechism. For previous months’ reflections, visit: PhillyEvang.org/wmof. You can order a copy of the catechism at WorldMeeting2015.org. “Love is Our Mission” because God created us for a reason: to love us, and for us to love one another (Chapter 1). God’s covenant with Israel and the Church reveals what God’s love is like: tender and passionate, but also steadfast and sacrificial (Chapter 2). In Chapter 3, we learn that the bodily, earthly world has spiritual significance. Tangible things - sacramentals, acts of charity, sacred art and culture, our liturgical feasts and fasts - have the capacity to reveal the glory of God. Marriage, as one of the sacraments, reveals this to us in a special way. The bodies of the spouses, in the complementarity of their masculinity and femininity, have the unique role of revealing God’s nature as a communion of life-giving love. How can a man and a woman imitate God’s love together? How can they live in a way that is intimate and committed, joyful and merciful, forgiving and fertile? Through their participation in the life of the Church, this kind of love becomes possible. God’s love is not an audition, or a temporary experiment, or a self-seeking negotiation. In the same way, marriage is never a private, inward romance, but always discovers its true nature in relation to God and his wider purposes. A sacramental marriage is called to be a little parable of God’s love, always ordered to joy and service. All Catholic sexual ethics flow from these ideas. In our next chapter, we will reflect in depth on marriage, followed by the next chapter about celibacy. – Dr. Christopher C. Roberts and Meghan Cokeley Did you know?
