We, the community of St. James, are a prayerful and
Eucharistic people who treasure our Catholic
traditions. We strive to grow in our faith by being good
stewards of the gifts God has given us; sharing God’s
truth with all. As the Body of Christ, we are called to love
and serve everyone, especially the marginalized, with
joy and hospitality.
The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph is committed to combating sexual

From the Pastor’s Pen
Mass Intentions
This weekend as we continue our celebration of
Christmas, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. We
get thrown off with the word ‘holiness’. We sometimes
think it means ‘perfect’. It isn’t. Holiness means
‘wholeness’---realizing God’s goodness and Love, and the
need for forgiveness and patience with those closest to
us----our family. That’s what we celebrate on this Feast,
that Joseph, Mary and Jesus were a ‘family’ who practiced
patience, acceptance and forgiveness with one another.
Not in a ‘perfect’ way, but each and every day. And that is
what we pray for in our families: that we might practice
gratitude for one another (despite our differences),
forgiveness, and patience each and every day!
A special THANK YOU to all who have been so
generous this month of December. Many folks have come
forth with gifts to support our Annual Appeal—which
keeps our parish running on a daily basis—and we are
MOST grateful! It takes all of us doing our part—so we
really appreciate those who have stepped forward this
time of year!
As we come to the end of 2014, we have many hopes
and dreams for our community of St. James---that most of
all---we will continue to be the caring, loving community to
support our families!
Of course, we look to the future to make sure we are
meeting the needs of all who come our way.
May each of us do our part to support the last year of our
capital campaign. We would like to see the building of a
new church and you’ll certainly hear a lot about our
exciting plans for 2015; let us do our part so that the good
work God has begun, might continue among us!
Come join us for Mass on New Year’s Eve at 5 p.m., or
New Year’s Day at 9:00 a.m., as we pray in gratitude for
God’s Blessings in 2014, and pray that we might be open
to God’s Blessings in 2015!

Someone is Watching and Wondering
Today we
celebrate the
Feast of the
Holy Family, and
in a few days we
will welcome the
New Year, 2015.
As I was
reflecting on
these two events,
the word “change” came to mind. Take just a few
minutes to think about the many ways and times
when your life changed, took a different path.
Sometimes it was subtle, barely detectable; other
times it was dramatic. Sometimes change occurred
with great happiness, like graduation from high
school or college, finding the perfect job, marriage,
the birth of a child, or moving into a new home. I am
certain there were also changes which brought great
sorrow such as the death of a loved one, natural
disasters, senseless violence, child abuse, or divorce.
Each year, between Christmas and New Years, we
are flooded with images of the past year. Of course
there is also time spent looking into the future, and
making resolutions. I am always amazed at how
much has happened in one year, and in some
respects I look forward to what is to come. I make
plans, and try to organize my life, but all too
frequently I get side-tracked by reality. There are
also times when I fall into the trap of wondering
“What’s the use, why plan at all?” It is then I hear a
voice deep within saying “I love you. Trust in my
love, that’s all that matters. I will never abandon
you.” It is then I know there is Hope. Hope for me,
hope for the all people of the world, hope for the
present, and yes hope for the future. God didn’t
create simply to become a spectator, merely
watching from afar. No, God wants to be intimately
involved in our lives. God wants us to live in peace
and joy. God loved creation into being, and
continues to love each of us. “God created
humankind in His image, in the divine image he
created them; male and female. . .God looked at
everything He had made, and He found it very good.”
These words, and many others found in Sacred
Scripture are what I believe, and what gives me the
strength and courage to continue. It is why I can get
up each morning, and feel Hope for the goodness of
another day. Like the picture above, I feel God’s love
and His many Blessings.

PLANNING A NEW YEAR’S GET TOGETHER?

supplies you need.

Special Community Blood Center Blood Drive
Tuesday December 30, 3:30 – 7:00 PM, Parish Hall
During the holidays, the number of patients needing
blood generally increases. Because it’s such a busy time
of the year, the number of donors available usually
decreases. Add that to the fact that the CBC is already
operating at critical levels and the need for blood donors
is even more crucial at this time. St. James is being
called to help by hosting this special blood drive.
Here’s what you can do:
Donate Blood: help save up to two lives with your gift.
Pray: for the success of this drive and the patients who
benefit.
Encourage: family and friends to donate and double your
efforts.
Volunteer: help serve refreshments, staff our babysitting
area, or clean up after the drive.

Our Faith In Action
The Advent Giving Tree 2014 Results
Thanks to all who
participated in the Advent
Giving Tree, we were
able to complete our tree
100% for the fourth
year in a row. This
would not have been
possible without the
support of all who took
tags from the trees,
donated money to “fund
the shoppers”, helped
prepare the tags,
volunteered time to shop
for missing gifts,
wrapped gifts, sorted and bagged gifts on Sunday
afternoon, as well as delivered them to various
agencies.
Our tree served eight agencies this year with 521
people requesting 1,433 gifts. St. James Parish has
helped make Christmas much brighter for hundreds
of children and adults.
I wish to thank the Core Committee for countless
hours of service, St. James Staff for their support,
the school students who tied ribbons on each tag
and all who volunteered their time and efforts to this
ministry. Without your commitment and countless
hours of work, this project would not be a success.

Things to Know:
• Almost $2,800 worth of Gift Cards were
purchased through the St. James HOPE
program to fund gifts for the Advent Giving Tree.
• The shoppers on Monday morning were able to
complete the tree by purchasing 70 gifts that
were not returned.
• It takes 12 drivers with trucks or vans to deliver
the 161 bags of gifts to our sister parish at St.
James Place on Wednesday morning. All other
agencies pick up their bags from the Social Hall
on Tuesday afternoon.

Keeping Christmas Going
Christmas doesn’t end Dec 25th…..It begins!
Do you still have your tree and lights up? Good
news, you are perfectly in season, now keep them
up and keep them ON for 2 more weeks.
The Twelve Days of Christmas begin with Christmas
Eve on the evening of December 24 and continue
until the feast of Epiphany (or Three Kings Day) Jan
6th. The actual Christmas season continues until the
Feast of the Baptism of Christ, which in the present
form of the Roman Rite is celebrated on the Sunday
after Epiphany, falling on January 11th this year.
Keep the Christmas lights glowing in your home
and in your heart!
Another way you
can also keep the
season going by
celebrating
Epiphany in your
home. In most Latin
American countries,
this is the big gift
giving holiday. The 3 Kings are where we get the
idea of giving gifts. In my house, on the night before
everyone leaves some grass and water in a shoebox
for the camels. The 3 Kings come in the night and
leave small gifts, such as books or small toys. I can
not say I have ever received any frankincense or
gold…...maybe someday

School Mission Statement
Corporal Works of Mercy for January: Shelter
the Homeless
We are partnering with Love INC to collect
suitcases (carry on or duffel bag type) for foster
children in Clay County. Right now in Clay County
there are 164 kids in foster care. Each of those
children will move an average of seven times while
in the program. When they move, their personal
belongings will be transported in a plastic trash
bag. Our goal, along with Love INC, is to give each
one of those children a suitcase for their
possessions. No child should have to leave home
carrying only a garbage bag.
We will also collect candles and hand
warmers for the people served by the
Uplift Organization in Kansas
City. Candles can be new or used.
Uplift will melt them down and pour
them into small can candles that can be used for
light and heat.
Reconciliation Wraps Up and First Communion
Begins
We have completed the preparation for First
Reconciliation and most of our children have
received the sacrament. Congratulations to all who
have! We have a small group who will be finishing
up in January. Our entire group will now begin First
Communion preparation. Our parent meetings are
Monday, January 12th and Wednesday, January
14th. Registration will be from 6 to 7 pm and the
cost of the set of 3 books will again be $20.
The St. James Catholic School Community,
a ministry of the parish, empowers students
to achieve their full academic and Christian
potential, become prayerful, lifelong learners and
good stewards of God’s gifts.
