We, the community of St. James, are a prayerful and
Eucharistic people who treasure our Catholic
traditions. We strive to grow in our faith by being good
stewards of the gifts God has given us; sharing God’s
truth with all. As the Body of Christ, we are called to love
and serve everyone, especially the marginalized, with
joy and hospitality.
The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph is committed to combating sexual

From the Pastor’s Pen
Mass Intentions
With a couple of weeks already into 2015, I want to thank all of
our good and faithful parishioners who were so very generous in
2014, especially towards the end of the year. Our Building Fund
saw a real boost, and hopefully will continue to grow so that our
dreams for a new church will become a reality. Our heating systems
required unexpected repairs during the holidays. Thank you for
being faithful to your operating fund commitment.
A special thanks to those who have contributed to my request to
help the poor and needy. Because of your generosity we were able
to help a number of families who often ‘fall through the
cracks’. That’s what living our faith is all about.
This weekend we are hearing from Nathan Stanley, a young man
who grew up in St. James parish. Nathan has dedicated his life to
ministering to college and university level students in the FOCUS
program--- helping young people grow in their Catholic faith. We are
very proud of Nathan and his wife Lauren, and thanks in advance for
your generosity to help them in this ministry!
We at St. James are experiencing a change in the administration
at our school. Molly Doherty has been principal here at St. James
for the last fifteen years, and we are grateful for her leadership. She has chosen to move on following this school year, and
will be taking another education position in the Kansas City
area. Molly will be truly missed, for she has been a vital part of
Catholic education in our diocese for many years, and has lived out
her calling to care for children and families in our Catholic
schools. It will be hard to ‘fill her shoes’ here at St. James, but we
are very grateful to our dedicated faculty and staff, who will carry on,
and hopefully we can hire a new principal with that same passion for
children and to guide St. James School into the future. We have a
excellent ‘search’ committee dedicated to hiring a new principal—so
please keep us in your prayers. Please take a moment to thank
Molly for her dedication to passing on the gift of faith and Catholic
education to our young people. Molly, Shawn and family will
continue to be faithful stewards of our parish community. Thanks so
much Molly, for your dedication and service here at St. James, and
in the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph!
This past weekend we had a tremendous celebration of Alan
Gremli’s life-----and so we continue to lift up Nancy and her
family. Alan’s death, as well as the death of their niece Colleen was
a real tragedy---but this community of St. James has rallied around
their family and it is the promise of our faith that Alan is celebrating
New Life in God’s Kingdom, watching over his family and this
community of St. James, to whom he was so very dedicated!
May you and your families continue to know God’s Goodness and
Love!

begin using the Symbolon Series to guide us and
teach us how to live out our Catholic Faith. We
meet Saturday mornings at 10:00 in the school

from the Newman Catholic Student center in Iowa
City, Iowa, have toured for the past fifteen years,
building a reputation for leadership in contemporary liturgical and inspirational music. In their own

Perhaps you
recognize one
of the many
photos taken
of deep, dark
outer space
with the Hubble Telescope, but still don’t know what it is.
At times this is how I feel when I try to understand God,
and all the things that happen in our everyday lives. Why
do children have cancer; why did someone die so
suddenly, or so young; why is there still so much violence
in our world; why do some people have so much while
others don’t even have enough food to eat or a safe
place to live. I could go on and on, and I’m sure you
have your own list. The point I am trying to make,
however, is that not a single person reading this can
possible know with absolute certainty what the next
moment, hour, day, week or year will bring. Yet we
continue to stumble through life, looking for meaning,
searching for answers, and ignoring the simplicity that is
eternally present. God loves us, cares for us, and will
lead us.
As I look at the above photo, I am awe struck and
amazed. Likewise, as I listen to these words from a
favorite hymn “Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, what
God has ready for those who love Him,” I am also awe
struck and amazed. Truth be told, I have no idea what
God has ready for me, yet I continue to be amazed at His
promise of life, of a world and humanity that is good, and
of being eternally held in His love. I know it is true, God
never leaves us, even when we turn away and try to shut
Him out of our lives. He is our loving parent, and I
believe He desires for us to know and love Him. If we
center our lives around Him, admit our limitations and
sinfulness, and open ourselves to His love I believe our
doubts, fears, loneliness, and darkness will be replaced
with His light. It is His light that will guide us, and we will
be changed. As we are changed, He lives in and through
us, His light shines brighter and brighter, and others will
also see and believe. Never allow fear and darkness to
replace your true hope and light. We don’t need all the
answers, but we do need to believe and trust that God is
so much more than our human limits can realize.

This is National Hobby Month, a good time to
stock up on supplies for your special hobby.
Whether it’s knitting, scrapbooking, jewelry
making, or some other craft, pick up a Michaels or
Jo-Ann Fabric gift card before you go shopping.
Other little-known national celebrations going on
this month are Hot Tea Month, Soup Month and
Oatmeal Month. January also brings some special
food days: Strawberry Ice Cream on the 15th,
Popcorn (19th), Granola Bar (21st), New England
Clam Chowder (22nd), Pie (23rd), Peanut Butter
(24th) and Blueberry Pancake (28th). You can
make your own celebration with these items by
shopping at HyVee, Price Chopper, Target, or
Walmart. Gift cards for these stores are kept in
stock so be sure to pick one or more up before
you shop.
Cards are on sale in the narthex after all weekend Masses and in the parish and school office
during the week. Order by 10 am on Monday and
your cards will be waiting for you after Mass the
following weekend.

The St. James Pastoral Council would like to
send out a Hearty Thank You to everyone that
participated in the Winter Coat Drive that we had in
December. We had an enormous amount of Coats
and Winter Clothing that was donated, in which we
packed multiple vehicles and brought them down to
St. Mary’s Food Kitchen where everything was set
out and given to the homeless/needy. It was VERY
WELL Received. We even took more coats down
after the Holidays to Bishop Sullivan Center as the
items kept coming in. Thank you again.

Vase of Fresh Flowers
is an original
play
written and performed by woman involved
with the Keeler Woman’s Center. It is an affirmation of the power, beauty and spirit of women and
a celebration of the vital role that Keeler Woman’s
Center plays in our community. The play focuses
on the many different paths journeyed and the
courage and strength of women who seek purpose and find meaningfulness in their lives. The
performance mixes the symbolism of flowers and
the
imagery of vases to reveal life stories and
life
experiences of different women. Through
movement, music and spoken word, the play
engages the audience in the intimacies and
struggles of growing from childhood to womanhood
A cast of 10 women from the Keeler Women’s
Center is touring this 40 minute play throughout
the Kansas City area. Vase of Fresh Flowers is
an interactive theatre experience and includes a
post-performance talk-back session focused on
issues raised in the play; domestic violence,
addictions, survivorship. Written and directed by
Deb Campbell, this play is part of a drama therapy
program offered at the Keeler Women’s Center
IN MEMORIAM
Our heartfelt condolences are with Nancy
Gremli and Family, including the families of
Steve Stichnot and Liz Zirkle in the tragic
deaths of Alan Gremli and his niece Colleen
Zirkle. Alan was truly an instrument of God’s
peace. He will be greatly missed in all the
countless ways that he touched our lives each
and every day in our parish family and in the
community. In his memory let us
continue to reach out to one another as Alan
did in God’s abiding love.

Keeping Christmas Going
Christmas doesn’t end Dec 25th…..It begins!
Do you still have your tree and lights up? Good
news, you are perfectly in season, now keep them
up and keep them ON for 2 more weeks.
The Twelve Days of Christmas begin with Christmas
Eve on the evening of December 24 and continue
until the feast of Epiphany (or Three Kings Day) Jan
6th. The actual Christmas season continues until the
Feast of the Baptism of Christ, which in the present
form of the Roman Rite is celebrated on the Sunday
after Epiphany, falling on January 11th this year.

and in your heart!

celebrating
Epiphany in your
home. In most Latin
American countries,
this is the big gift
giving holiday. The 3 Kings are where we get the
idea of giving gifts. In my house, on the night before
everyone leaves some grass and water in a shoebox
for the camels. The 3 Kings come in the night and
leave small gifts, such as books or small toys. I can
not say I have ever received any frankincense or
gold…...maybe someday

Corporal Works of Mercy for January: Shelter
the Homeless
Thanks to the overwhelming response to the
request for suitcases for foster children from Liberty
churches, Love INC has been able to supply all of
foster children in Clay county and the children in the
care of other agencies as well! It’s truly
heartwarming that the churches in Liberty came
through for kids in need!
Love INC, has a shortage of hygiene items. When
folks come to the food pantry, they are often living in
their cars, as there is no homeless shelter north of
the river. We will be organizing a drive during
January to put together just those items.
We are continuing to collect candles and hand
warmers for the people served by the Uplift
Organization in Kansas City. Candles can be new
or used--Uplift will melt them down and pour them
into small can candles that can be used for light and
heat.
First Communion Parent Meeting Reminder:
Our parent meetings are Monday, January 12th and
Wednesday, January 14th. Registration will be from
6 to 7 pm. The cost is $20 for the set of 3 books.

Little Saints Snow Day:
Thursday, Jan. 22, 10 to 11:30 am, in the Social Hall
Bring the kids in their favorite warm pajamas! We’ll stay
warm creating indoor snowball fights, building inside
snowmen and watching a short movie. This month we
stress the Corporal Work of Mercy “Shelter the
Homeless”. Please bring a candle or hand-warmers to
donate to the homeless and the cold. Contact Lori
