Construction Update:
To meet the November 23rd bulletin deadline, this
article was submitted on November 17th.
The city has advised us that they are moving
forward with our request to declare Stewart Road
in front of St James a school zone. Restricted
speed at drop off and pick-up times, assuming no
hold-ups. We should be seeing the results in the
next weeks. This should make for a safer
process for all during our peak traffic times.
“Curb Painting Help” - In the past we have had
some parishioners help with painting curbs. We
could use that assistance again. Please give Jim
a call at 781-4343 ext 204
We are working on a new website and need all
ministry heads to please respond to the email
request for updates on your ministry content as
shown in the latest guide book/directory.

website updates, or have any questions please

Mass Intentions
Pope Francis proclaimed 2015 a Year of Consecrated Life,
starting on the First Sunday of Advent, the weekend of
November 29, 2014, and ending on February 2, 2016, the World
Day of Consecrated life. The year also marks the 50th
anniversary of Perfectae Caritatis, a decree on religious life, and
Lumen Gentium, the Second Vatican Council’s constitution on
the Church. Its purpose, as stated by the Vatican is to “make a
grateful remembrance of the recent past” while embracing “the
future with hope.” “Our brothers and sisters in Christ living
consecrated lives make great contributions to our society
through a vast number of ministries,” said Archbishop Joseph E.
Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, president of USCCB. “They teach
in our schools, take care of the poor and the sick and bring
compassion and the love of Christ to those shunned by society;
others lead lives of prayer in contemplation for the world.”
As Vocation Director for the Missionaries of the Precious
Blood, I am excited to share with you and celebrate this Year of
Consecrated Life. Sometimes the best-kept secret is the joy we
have in the commitments we have made. I find great joy and
delight in my commitment to the community and the ministries in
which I serve. Ask any of my brothers in community and they
will also share with you the great joy in their hearts of serving
others. Many times I am asked the question, “What do you do?”
It is sometimes difficult to answer. I celebrate Mass, I pray, I
study and contemplate Scripture and the newspaper and the
world in which we live. I administer the sacraments of
forgiveness and healing when called upon. I rejoice with
baptizing a new child in the faith and witness the love of a
couple at a wedding. I struggle with speaking words of hope to
someone who is just down and out on his or her luck. I sit and
listen to someone pour out his or her heart with the struggles he
or she is facing in life. I walk with others, journey with others and
share my experience of Jesus Christ in my life. The stories are
share are spoken from the heart in hopes that others will come
to find Jesus in their lives and know the love and presence of
God in his or her life. I live my life and my faith and journey with
others to lead them to Christ.
As we celebrate the Year of Consecrated Life, we are called
to a deeper awareness of what it means to serve the church,
God, and one another. I find great joy and peace in my vocation
and sharing God’s word with others. May we continue to pray
for another so that others may hear God’s call to a life of
service.
My prayers are with you this day,
Fr. Timothy

Someone is Watching and Wondering
Recently I asked our St.
James catechumens and
candidates to describe the
qualities of a saint. Here are
a few of their answers: one
who serves God through
service to others, accepting
differences, kind, one who
protects, respectful, patient,
loving, humble, caring,
positive, compassionate, nonoffensive, and one who
embraces change in themselves. The second
question was to describe a non-saintly individual.
These are their responses: selfish, heartless,
manipulative, vane, self absorbed, a murderous
nature, filled with hate, disrespectful of others, self
centered, and shameless. Finally I asked, “Do you
possess any of these traits?” What is your
response to this final question; do you possess traits
of the saintly, or non-saintly individual? My guess,
you find traits of yourself from both lists. It depends
on the moment, the individual(s) you are dealing
with, and the situation in which you find yourself.
Today the Feast of Christ the King, try to develop
a list of traits you find desirable in a king/leader. I
anticipate your list resembles the one above for a
saint. Additionally, most of us desire a leader who
is just like us in thinking, beliefs, and actions, yet
who is without fault; in other words, perfect. In
reality that will never be true for any leader. It is
upon this truth that I understand why people of His
day rejected Jesus. Oh, there were His followers,
but even they did not understand why He spoke and
acted they way He did. I suppose in many ways
they found Jesus the exact opposite of what they
thought the Messiah King should be. He was
ordinary. He wasn’t wealthy. He was gentle, kind,
and forceful without an army, or weapons other than
His words and works which made some feel shame
and anger. He put others first, especially the most
vulnerable (women, children, the poor). He
embraced sinners and chastised those who
embraced their own holiness above love of God.
His anger was directed at those blind to their own
sinfulness; to pettiness and self-centeredness. He
never claimed power Himself, rather He always
directed people to His Father in heaven. He spoke
of love and forgiveness, of inclusion not exclusion,
of giving rather than receiving. If you met Jesus
today would you recognize Him, or would you see
Him as “that other?”

businesses and services in our
community. We are encouraging our parishioners to support
our own. If you would like to be
included, please email
[email protected]; or 781.4343 X 200

Several parishioners have
already added their businesses,
include yours today.
Immaculata Manor Thrift Shop needs volunteers to sort/display their items. Please consider helping. To
inquire call Amy at 781-5472. Donations always welcome.
We remind you to save your UPC’s from all Best Choice products and please bring them to the designated
box on the bulletin table in the narthex. This is the only fundraiser our Over 50 Group has, and it is easy to
support them...just cut off the UPC codes and drop them in the box.
Did you know we collect the pull-tabs from aluminum pop cans? The donation of these pull-tabs benefit the
Ronald McDonald House. There is a container on the bulletin table in the narthex for your donation.
Please continue to use our recycle bins for your paper. From this donation we receive a stipend.

FALL BLOOD DRIVE
‘Tis the Season!
The holiday season is upon us
and there are
so many things to do.
As you make out your to-do-list,
please don’t forget
to include “DONATE BLOOD”.
Many local patients will be spending the holidays in
the hospital without your generous donation.
Join us in our efforts to help others have a
blessed holiday by attending our next
Community Blood Center blood drive
on Tuesday, November 25th
from 12:30-7:00 pm
in the social hall.
Appointments are encouraged and you can sign up
online at www.savealifenow.org using sponsor code

questions, please call 1-800-245-7035.
Walk-ins are welcome and childcare is available.
Each registered donor will receive a KC Chiefs

Volunteers are an essential part of each blood drive
and we are looking for friendly faces to help staff the
refreshment table and babysitting area. A few extra
helping hands around 7 pm to help with cleanup
would also be appreciated. Please contact Nikki if
you would like to help. Service hours will be
available for students.
Now go get started on that to-do-list
and we’ll see you on the 25th!
Corporal Work for November is Bury the Dead.
To follow this work, we are called to take action
and support all who are facing death. We are
called to help ease their suffering regardless of
the circumstances surrounding their passing.
But how?
• Provide companionship, be a good listener,
have compassion.
• Offer prayers for the terminally ill, and for the
peace and comfort of surviving family.
• Urge those who have difficulty in coping to
seek pastoral or professional counseling.
• Support organizations which care for the
dying and those that offer grief counseling.
•Attend funeral or wake services; your
presence can mean so much to survivors.
In addition, we should also work to address
the underlying health and social justice
issues which contribute to untimely deaths.
Be sure to visit the Narthex and our Altar of
the Dead. We invite you to place the name of
a loved one who has passed in our Parish
Book of the Dead also you are invited to add
a picture of a loved one to our altar.

Hope cards really make a difference!
Your purchases of HOPE cards really do make a
difference in our ministries here at St James. So
before you get ready for your family's big
Thanksgiving dinner, stop by the school office (or the
narthex after Mass) and pick up a Hy-Vee or Price
Chopper (or Walmart or Honey Baked Ham)
card....it's a great way to support our parish while
buying the things you would have bought
anyway. No wrapping paper to order, no fundraiser
to support, just buy what you normally buy with a
convenient, easy-to-use gift card. The money raised
through the HOPE program really makes a
difference!

Sing to the Lord with
thanksgiving;

Who gives animals their food

Rather the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear

5
GREAT REASONS to Patronize the
Merchants in Our Church Bulletin!
1. They support the work of our church.
2. It keeps money in our community. For every $100 spent at a
locally owned business, $68 goes back into the community
and your tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store,
only $43 comes back. Online purchases bring nothing
back to our local community.
3. Keeps our community unique. Where we shop, where
we eat and have fun—all of it makes our community
home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part
of the distinctive character of our community.
4. Creates more good jobs. Small local
businesses are the largest employer
nationally and in our community.
5. Get better service. Local businesses
often hire people with a better
understanding of the products
they are selling and take more time
to get to know customers.
