Today’s gospel says Joseph “made his home in Nazareth.” A “home” is built on the
foundation of love, commitment and a shared history and is decorated with forgiveness,
acceptance, rituals, discipline and mutual support. The Holy Family challenges us today: Don’t live ‘anyplace,’ live at HOME!
FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY
Traditionally Catholics dedicate
the Sunday after Christmas to
“the Holy Family” of Jesus, Mary
and Joseph. This is a good day
for us to pray for our own families as well as for families struggling with unemployment, divorce, serious illness, addictions,
etc. I read somewhere that according to one psychologist 98%
of
American
families
are
“dysfunctional.” In other words,
every family has problems! All
the more reason to fall on our
knees and beg God’s help on a
regular basis.

On behalf of all the people of our parish I wish to
sincerely thank all those who gave of themselves so
that our celebration of Christ’s birth could be such a
beautiful one. A special thank you to all who helped
to make this Holy Season so memorable for Holy
Name Parish, namely: all Choir Directors and all
Choir Members both adult and children; Hand Bell
Choirs, our Ushers, Lectors, Altar Servers and Eucharistic Ministers; the volunteers who decorated
the sanctuary along with men who set the trees;
Kevin O’Brien who donated the trees this year; benefactors for all the Poinsettia Memorials; men and
women who cleaned the church; and others offering
stewardship of Time and Talent in varied ways. God
will bless you for your generosity!

of Mary, the Mother of God. This is a Holy Day of Obligation in the United States. Thus it
is not only a good idea to begin the New Year by going to Mass - it’s the law! The Mass

It is an agenda item for the week of January 12 to
mail to all parishioners on the envelope list a copy of
their contributions to Holy Name Parish for the calendar year 2014. The weekend of January 3/4 will be
the final weekend to accept the 2014 dated envelopes for posting into our computer ledger.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
In the last century, a few new feasts were blended into the Church year, including today’s. After
World War I, the chaos of daily life in Europe made
its impact felt on the family structure. Partly to offer
Christians an image of hope and holiness in married
family life, and also to promote the welfare of children, today’s feast was “invented” in 1921. In 1969, it
became a feast of Christmas.
The prayers today remind us not only of family
life, but of life in the community of faith. We ponder
the mystery of a God who loves us dearly enough to
embrace the struggles, joys, and daily sorrows of
family life. The message of Christmas shines
through: God-with-us is available to us in the ordinary patterns of our lives and commitments. The
lives of people who raise their children in difficult circumstances, and of people who remain faithful to life
in the Church in spite of some of their own family
struggles, occupy a special place in our hearts today
in prayer.

YEAR END CHARITABLE GIFTS
“Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, but to God
what is God’s.” When it comes to year-end giving,
the more we render to God the less we need to render to Caesar. That is, by making a special gift to
Holy Name before the end of the year, you can reduce your income taxes, if you itemize. For more

TAKE A CHANCE ON A SPYDER!
By now you should have received in the mail a
Christmas greeting from your pastor, as well as a
few tickets on the SPYDER bike we will raffle off at
the Holy Name Festival next June 7th. If you aren’t
familiar with what a SPYDER is, please check out
the display in the Narthex. A cash option is available if you prefer. Please buy or sell as many tickets
as you can, to benefit Holy Name Parish and
School. They are $5.00 a piece.
ELEMENTARY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
NO CLASSES - Elementary religious education students in grades 1 thru 6 WILL NOT HAVE CLASSES on
December 30th. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 6, 2015. Mrs. Diane Bopp, Director and all the
catechists wish you a Happy & Healthy New Year!
FIRST PENANCE PARENT/CHILD MEETING
First Penance Parent/Child meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 7th @ 6:30 PM in the Church
hall. Each family is asked to bring a dozen cookies that evening; no cookies with peanut products please.
ELEMENTARY CCD INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
Please remember that in case of inclement weather IF Central Cambria cancels school or if they have an
early dismissal because of weather conditions then Elementary CCD (or religious education) - grade 1- 6 is

9th & 10th Grade Confirmation News: Mark Your
Calendar for CONFIRMATION RETREATS!
Jan 3rd there will be a Confirmation Retreat for all 9th
Grade Students from 9 a.m. – 12 noon at the Sister
Servants of the Sacred Heart Retreat Center on Munster Road. This is mandatory retreat for all Freshman.
10th Grade Students will have their Confirmation
Retreat Jan 3rd from 1 – 4 p.m. at the Retreat Center
with Mass following in the Sacred Heart Chapel. This
is a mandatory retreat for all Sophomores. If you
have any questions, call Nancy at 241-7809.
“CRAFTY” VOLUNTEER NEEDED
Is your talent making crafts or sewing? The
Elementary Religious Education Program is in
need of someone to make 2 Mass kits to be
used as a teaching aid in the classroom(s).
Supplies and directions already available. Please contact Diane Bopp @ 472-2357 if
you are able and willing to help with this project.
Additional items we need:
2 small table top crucifixes
2 Cruet sets- the small ones with handles
that are typically used for oil and vinegar.
2 Candle snuffers

HOW DO WE PRAY?
Pope Francis spoke about the necessity of prayer in our lives, and also about the struggle to
pray.
“Do we pray like this, out of habit, piously but
unbothered, or do we put ourselves forward with
courage before the Lord to ask for the grace, to
ask for what we’re praying for? Courage in prayer: a prayer that is not courageous is not a real
prayer,” the pope said. “The courage to trust
that the Lord listens to us, the courage to knock
on the door...The Lord says: ‘For everyone who
asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds;
and to the one who knocks, the door will be
opened.’ But you have to ask, seek, and knock.”
How do we muster up the courage to knock,
to seek again and again? Where do we find the
will and the way?

The sun is just rising on the morning of another day, the first day of a new year. What can I wish that
this day, this year, may bring to me? Nothing that shall make the world or others poorer, nothing at
the expense of other men; but just those few things which in their coming do not stop with me, but
touch me rather, as they pass and gather strength.

A few friends who understand me, and yet remain my friends.
A work to do which has real value without which the world would feel the poorer.
A return for such work small enough not to tax unduly anyone who pays.
A mind unafraid to travel, even though the trail be not blazed.
An understanding heart.
A sight of the eternal hills and unresting sea and of something beautiful the hand of man has
made.
A sense of humor and the power to laugh.
A little leisure with nothing to do.
A few moments of quiet, silent meditation. The sense of the presence of God.
And the patience to wait for the coming of those things, and the wisdom to know them when they
come.
