Glen Cove Public Library Newsletter
On any given day, most of what you do will involve computer systems. From the gadgets in your car,
to programming your television, to filling out a health insurance form, we are surrounded by technology.
We have reached the tipping point where performing basic tasks often require basic computer skills.
If you do not already have these skills, now is the time to learn.
Our knowledgeable librarians teach basic computer workshops, in English and Spanish, including:
AN INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTING
 BASIC INTERNET SEARCHING
 USING THE INTERNET TO COMMUNICATE
 BASIC WORD PROCESSING WITH MS WORD

The class size will be limited to ensure everyone gets the personal attention necessary.
Registration is required and takes place at the Reference desk. A $5.00 fee
will reserve your seat and will be returned when you attend the class.
The Glen Cove Library Board of Trustees and the staff would like to thank the Friends of the Library
for their donation of the computers we use for these classes. They greatly benefit the Glen Cove Community.

A LOOK AT THE PAST
The nineteenth century saw a radical improvement in the types and speed of communication possible between Glen Cove
and New York City. By the 1830s, the slow post-rider and the coastal sailing vessel were replaced by fast, sleek steamboats
that carried mail and other communications in only one third of the time. The Long Island Railroad built the Glen Street
railroad station in 1868. Although the speed of steamboats and trains were comparable, trains had less difficulty reaching
Glen Cove during the winter months when the steamboats were paralyzed for weeks by frozen harbors.
A small mysterious pamphlet of dull gray color with deckle edges found in the Robert R. Coles Long Island History collection contains short stories of local Long Island characters. The stories are written with wit and humor. The stories reveal
how people spoke and entertained themselves in the 1800s. The following story, “Revenge” was originally published by the
press of the Glen Cove Record.
LOCAL CHARACTERS – “REVENGE”
In these days of automobiles and autobuses, when a trip of ten
or fifteen miles takes but a fraction of an hour, it seems a far
cry to the time when such a trip was by horseback taking half a
day and is probably one of the reasons why so many young
men found their wives near home, for “courting a girl from a
distance” was out of the question. Occasionally, however, one
more courageous than the rest would make long trips to nearby
towns to attend parties, or make calls.
Such a one was Absolem, to whom distance made little difference. Absolem, who lived in Musketa Cove (now Glen Cove),
greatly admired Matilda, whose home was in Oyster Bay.
When he heard of a party to be held at Cow Bay (Port WashColes Family, ca. 1887
ington), he invited Matilda to accompany him and she accepted. The young couple were much alike in their dispositions. Matilda was bright, witty, attractive and somewhat inclined to
flirt, while Absolem was equally snappy, with rather a quick temper.
On the afternoon of the party, Absolem started early on horseback with a pillion behind him, on which Matilda was to ride.
It was a fine afternoon and evening so that the ride from Musketa Cove to Oyster Bay and thence to Cow Bay was a pleasant one and greatly enjoyed by Absolem. But all his pleasure ended on arriving at the party, for Matilda met a young man
who seemed to strike her fancy. She totally ignored Absolem for the rest of the evening. He was left to glower in the corner, his ire rising higher and higher as time passed.
At the end of the party, Absolem strode out of the house, untied his horse and started for home. As he was leaving, someone called “Ain’t you taking Matilda?” “No, I ain’t,” replied Absolem. “I brought her, but the devil can take her home.”
History does not record how Matilda did get home.
