Unfortunately many of us forget this invitation as soon as Christmas is over. Adoring Jesus Christ is a year round calling. Every one of us who claim to be Christian should be spending time everyday adoring God. During this year of prayer, we are going to be offering opportunities to grow in faith, to learn about prayer and to spend time actually praying. For many years, our parish has offered Eucharistic Adoration on the 4th Wednesday of the month. We’ve also offered Adoration every Wednesday during Advent and Lent. I am happy to announce that beginning in January, Adoration will be offered every Wednesday, all year long from 9:00 am to 8:00pm. You are invited to drop in anytime on Wednesday to make a visit for a few minutes or spend an hour. But in order to make this happen, we need at least two people committed to spend 30 minutes to an hour each week before the Blessed Sacrament. If you able to sign up for a specific time slot, please call Mary, 636-274-1717, or Maria, 314-707-2136. Another New Year This week we will celebrate the end of the old year 2014 and the arrival of another new year, 2015. Masses will be celebrated on Wednesday December 31st at 5:00 pm and on Thursday January 1st at 8:00 am and 10:00 am. I want to wish all of you a very blessed and Happy New Year. Do not be afraid to go and to bring Christ into every area of life, to the fringes of society, even to those who seem farthest away, most indifferent. It’s amazing how long we can hold a grudge or be angry with someone. As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, take this opportunity to give the gift of forgiveness to someone - maybe someone in your family, maybe a friend, maybe a co-worker or neighbor or, maybe yourself. The original context out of which the oracle grew was the situation of Israel late in the time of the Babylonian Exile and/or early in the time of restoration. In that context, the oracle speaks of hope, hope for reuniting the people of Israel in their homeland, hope for peace among the nations of the world, hope that Israel will provide light, will be a means of procuring peace and justice. In its final form as Scripture, the Book of Isaiah addresses all believing communities of all time. The book proclaims to us that we have a mission, we are to be a light of God’s revelation for all people, that we are to be a means of establishing a relationship between God and all humanity, a means of establishing peace and love. SECOND READING: Ephesians 3:2-3, 5-6 The second reading is from the Letter to the Ephesians, one of the deutero-Pauline letters. Ephesians broadens the perspective found in the undisputedly Pauline letters that the Church is the body of Christ, to claim a universal status for the Church, not merely a local expression. It is the unity of all believers throughout the world that makes THEME: We celebrate small beginning with up the Body of Christ. This understanding of the Church unimaginable results. carries it far beyond an original, Palestinian The Feast of the Epiphany is now celebrated on the orientation. In this light, the writer of the Letter to the Second Sunday after Christmas and brings the Christmas Ephesians has a commission of God’s grace to impart Season to a close. The word epiphany means revelation to the community and that commission involves the or manifestation. Today we celebrate that, in God’s plan, universal mission of the whole Church, the world-wide what was begun with the “yes” of a simple Jewish girl, Body of Christ. We are to fulfill the oracle of Isaiah; we what took root in an otherwise insignificant family, what are to be a light drawing all people into the embrace of fulfilled God’s promises to His Chosen People, is, in fact, God’s offer of a loving relationship; we are to be a means the salvation of the whole world. We celebrate small of building a universal Body of Christ in justice, love beginnings with unimaginable results; we celebrate the and peace. breaking down of barriers that keep people apart. GOSPEL READING: Matthew 2:1-12 The Gospel reading is taken from Matthew’s Infancy himself to us as He is. We are called to be a light of Narrative. In the narrative, a light for the nations, in the revelation to all people. Do I really believe that I can form of a star, draws the wise men from the east, be a means of sharing God's gift of Himself to foreigners, to the newly born child. While Herod and the others as He is? How can I do this? Is this a gift, religious leaders of Israel fear the birth of Jesus and do an obligation, or just wishful thinking? not come to see God’s light, outsiders, Gentiles, respond. It is the response that makes all the difference, not membership in any community or group, but Revelation refers, theologically, to God's gift of The universal Church is identified as the Body of openness to our revealing God. With the message of the Christ in the world. Does the universal church make angels to the poor, outcast shepherds in Luke, this a difference in the world? Does my parish and reading from Matthew makes it clear that the mystery of diocese contribute to this mission? How? What is the Incarnation is all about breaking down the barriers my role, within the context of the Church, of making that keep people apart. Christ present in the world? Today we celebrate God’s light for all people, but in that celebration we also embrace a commission, to be that In Luke, the message of Jesus birth is proclaimed light, to be a means of God’s presence, to break down by angels to poor shepherds, the outsiders and barriers of hostility and prejudice, hatred and outcasts of the Jewish community; in Matthew, the misunderstanding, ignorance and fear that drive people message is to wise men from the east - non- apart. We are commissioned to build a place where all Jews. The stories agree that Jesus' birth is good are welcomed, all needs are met, all people are treated news, news that breaks down barriers between with dignity and equality, all are sons and daughters of a people. What barriers exist between me and common Father. others? What do I need to do to be open to these people, to overcome the barriers? Can I claim to be a follower of Jesus if I hold on to barriers and distinctions? How prevalent are hostility and prejudice, hatred and misunderstanding, ignorance and fear in the world around me? How does the Church, as the Body of Christ for all people, attempt to address these issues? What is my role, as a member of the FOR REFLECTION: In my world, what are the barriers that keep people apart? What little things in my life begin to break these barriers down? How can I see and celebrate the presence of God in these little, seemingly insignificant things? Church, in promoting forgiveness, peace and justice?
