If you have not had a chance to open the gallery from the email link that you were sent, be sure to take some time in the coming days to view samples of the work that students produced during first quarter. Based on the quality and creativity of that work, quarter 2 promises some high level learning and wonderful project results. GHS STRING WORKSHOP FOR ORCHESTRA STUDENTS: On Wednesday October 29, the GHS string students spent the day with Ms. Lieberman, a resident of Newtown. She composed a string orchestra work in tribute to the 12/4/12 shooting victims in her town “Newtown Peace Anthem”, in addition to producing memorial string concerts nationwide, one year after the shooting. Ms. Lieberman has taught creative musicianship and American and world string styles in school residencies and teacher training across the United States and abroad, as a well as The Julliard School. Our seniors who are applying for a major in an art area are highly focused on preparing their 15-25 works and their artist statement for their portfolio, which is required in addition to all of the standard application materials. Students improvised in small groups, they learned new techniques about vibrato, string crossings and how to incorporate these techniques in the different style of music they play. They learned about technology for strings. They also practiced two pieces which were composed by Julie Lyonn Lieberman: French Roast and Bollywood Strings. The art teachers are in the process of selecting work to represent GHS in the state level of the Scholastic Art Awards Program. The deadline is December 22nd and the process involves teacher registration, taking digital images of the works, formatting, on line registration and entry forms. The actual adjudication will take place on January 10th and 11th of 2015. Even though it was a long day, it was very inspiring to students. You may have noticed a string student playing his instrument while waiting for his bus outside on that day. Here are a couple of quotes from students: “She was really nice and fun to work with.” “I thought it was cool to meet the person who wrote the songs we are playing.” “She taught us how to improvise and sight read better.” THE CHILDREN’S NUTCRACKER AT GOFFSTOWN HIGH SCHOOL A UNIQUE PERFORMANCE AND COMMUNITY COLLABORATION The GHS Movement and Dance Company presents the 2nd annual “Children’s Nutcracker” on Friday, December 5th at 7:30 PM and Saturday, December 6th at 2:00 and 7:30 PM. This Children’s Nutcracker is a collaboration lead by the GHS Performing Arts Movement and Dance Company. Working alongside the YMCA Dance Program, The Manchester Community Music School, Goffstown Main Street, The Ninth State Dance Company, and local schools, this unique production delights families with kids of all ages. Inside of 60-minutes, this Nutcracker shares the spirit of the production in an accessible, narrated performance featuring students, local celebrities, and professional musicians. Including a new cast of characters as well as some familiar faces, this year’s Nutcracker holds some surprises! Joined by professional musicians and father and daughter duo Charles and Elizabeth Blood, this special performance offers a unique “four-hands” piano presentation of Tchaikovsky’s composition. The two seasoned pianists will perform this beloved score on the GHS concert grand piano live at each performance. As the Performance Coordinator and Piano Faculty at the Manchester Community Music School, Ms. Blood’s recent performances in the Greater Boston area includes collaborations with Opera Providence, Boston Midsummer Opera, New England Light Opera and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Justin McCarthy received his Doctor of Music degree from Boston University and has given recitals in Houston, Dallas, New York, Boston, Ireland, the Czech Republic, and the Philippines. The Children’s Nutcracker features little dancers from the YMCA Allard Center’s Dance Program as Mother Ginger’s Polichinelles. Ballroom children and featured Land of Sweets dancers reign from Maple Avenue Elementary, Bartlett Elementary, and New Boston Central School, thus including children from every school in the Goffstown School District. Performances are Friday, December 5th at 7:30 PM and Saturday, December 6th at 2:00 and 7:30 PM at the Hieber Theater. Tickets are $8 for students and seniors, $10 for adults, and may be purchased at the GHS Office and local businesses in Goffstown. GOFFSTOWN HIGH SCHOOL 50th ANNIVERSARY TIME CAPSULE A small group of teachers and staff gathered on the hill leading down to the river in 1964. Their goal: to bury a time capsule about their students that a future generation would uncover. This was Goffstown High School’s last year at its downtown location. In 1965, the town would dedicate a new high school at 27 Wallace Road. The old school building would eventually be repurposed for senior housing, and soon, the old time capsule was all but forgotten. Fast-forward fifty years to 2014… as far as we know the time capsule remains buried in the spot it was originally located. Students and staff at the new Goffstown High School have formed a club to honor their school building’s upcoming 50th anniversary. Club members recently visited the site of the old school building with retired GHS teacher Mr. Battey, who showed us the location where he believes the capsule rests. We are all very curious about what students from half a century ago wanted us to know about them and we are planning a day to go out with a metal detector to look for any signs of the item. The 50th Anniversary Club has also decided that our high school on Wallace Road needs a time capsule of its own, with memorabilia that represents the life of teens in 2015. A school yearbook will go into the capsule and our first donated item, a broken cell phone, will also be included. Goffstown students recently completed a survey to determine what other favorite people, places, and things should be represented. The club is culling those “populars” so that the creation of a modern time capsule can begin in earnest. The heirloom will be kept in the new school archives. If all goes well, the club will create a visible monument in collaboration with the art and shop departments so generations to come will remember our time capsule. What should members of the GHS community in 2065 know about students today? Anyone who would like to join the club, has knowledge of the old time capsule, would like to participate in the new time capsule project, or wants to learn more about other projects associated with the school’s anniversary, should contact GHS librarian Melissa Mannon at [email protected]. 10 YE A RBOOK Order Your Goffstown High School Nisa ‘Tin 2015 Yearbook Today! Students are required to be at school on all exam days. Normal school hours are in effect. All students must attend all periods unless they have a permission slip, signed by a parent/guardian or they already have late arrival or early release. Attendance will be taken and checked against student permission slips. Students who remain at school will be accommodated in designated areas: the cafeteria and/or info center. Students must arrive on time, sign in, and remain in these areas during exam periods. Students late for exams will not be allowed to take the exam unless approved to do so by an administrator. Students missing an exam for valid reasons approved by an administrator will take a scheduled make-up exam. A zero will be assigned to any student who misses an exam without a valid reason. Seniors must take Semester I exams. Only second semester seniors can be exempt from final exams. Exceptions are as identified by NECAP proficiency. Regular buses will run at the usual times each day. Current regulations governing student parking will remain in place during exams. Only those students with valid parking stickers will be allowed to park at GHS. We cannot risk an unsafe situation that undoubtedly would occur with unrestricted student parking. An early dismissal permission slip signed by a parent/guardian must be on file with the attendance secretary on or before Friday, January 23rd. Without this authorization slip on file, a student will not be released until 2:41 unless picked up by the parent/guardian.
