Carefree Gazette THE VOICE OF THE CAREFREE COMMUNITY A 55+ Community “If you keep a smile tucked away in your heart, it’s easy to keep one on your face.” 2015 Holiday City Homeowners’ Corporation 98 Bananier Drive Toms River, N.J. 08757-3850 Tel. (732) 349-1050 Holidaycity.bravesites.com 2015 Pre-Sorted Standard US Postage PAID Permit #12 Toms River, N.J. The cold weather makes it hard to get motivated to go outdoors and shoot, but there are some great photo opportunities to be had in winter. Make certain you dress for the cold and watch for ice! Even when there is no snow, icy pond make great subjects. Look for ducks, geese, or sea gulls standing on the ice. Ice also makes for great reflection images. Many normal scenes take on a new meaning in the cold of winter After a snowfall there are great shots everywhere. The challenge with snow shots is getting the proper exposure. A very bright snowy scene tricks you camera into thinking there is too much light, so the camera will cut back on exposure. This makes the snow in your images look gray. If you know how to set your exposure compensation, increase the exposure by 1 stop to brighten the snow. If your camera has “scene” modes, use the one for snow or beach. The bare leafless trees make nice silhouette shots and are very good for black and white photography. They are especially effective with a sunrise or sunset behind them. That’s it for this month. As always you can email [email protected] with any photographic questions. Visit my web site at www.KirmsPhotography.com if you’d like to see more of my images. Remember to keep shooting and trying to improve your images, but most importantly, have fun with your camera. 2 CAREFREE GAZETTE january, 2015 Snowy Images The CAREFREE GAZETTE Published Monthly By HOLIDAY CITY HOMEOWNERS CORPORATION “The Carefree Community” 98 Bananier Drive, Toms River, N.J. 08757-3850 (732) 349-1050 (Fax) (732) 818-1215 Holidaycity.bravesites.com President: Vice President: Secretary: Treasurer: Anthony Trause Terry LiCausi Joseph Marone Frank Burbage 2015 Board of Directors Director Director Director Gazette Staff Editor-in-Chief: Isabella Yadvish Treasurer: Gert McKeon - Secretary: Calendar: Betty Colyer Copy Editors: Betty Colyer, Lottie Molnar, Gert McKeon, Elaine Brown Featured Writer: Elaine Brown Cover Illustrators: Ivy Howard Kuznetzow Frank Bracco Dolores DeMasi Bookkeeping: Gert McKeon Website: Isabella Yadvish Photographer: Lottie Molnar Board Liaison: Tony Trause Schaffner, and Irene LaRocco The CAREFREE GAZETTE, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to accept or reject any and all advertising. Hi Rollers By Jim Burns I n the past the Hi-Rollers preferred going to one of three casinos that were next to one another. That gave our riders a choice and they could pick the casino they liked best. Unfortunately that is no longer possible. Looking ahead the only two casinos next to one another will be Bally’s and Caesar’s. Unfortunately the walk-in from the bus terminal in both of those is quite long and the walk to places to eat is even further. Many of our riders are limited in getting around and that is why we avoided these casinos in the past. Some of these riders have been going with us for years and rarely miss one of our trips. I am sure most of our riders will agree that the Resorts Casino is the most convenient of all. When you get off the bus the restrooms are right there and slot machines and the food court are just outside the bus lobby. With that in mind our next trip on Jan. 5th is to the Resorts Casino. The cost is the usual $23 and you get back $25 in slot play. The Hi-Rollers are always looking for ways to keep our riders happy and we are always open to any sugges- 20 CAREFREE GAZETTE january, 2015 tions. We continually need to attract new riders to replace those who can no longer go on these trips. Our goal is to accommodate anyone who wants to go on our buses. At times paying for a 2nd bus is a gamble; but yet with only one bus we might have to tell a number of people we don’t have room for them and this we hate to do. Hopefully 2015 will be a great year for all of us. Holly Twig welcomed a new slate of officers at a wonderful holiday luncheon in December. The new officers are: President Elizabeth Ferriaoli Vice President Millie Delgado Secretary Cathy Wajda TreasurerJoyce Bocchino ChaplainJean Rodriguez We wish these dedicated women much success in their fundraising endeavors for the new year. In November, we held a fundraiser at the hospital and raised almost $4000. This money will be given to the Auxiliary so that patient comfort items may be purchased. Also in November the winner of the $500 visa gift card was drawn. Karen de Sagun of Holiday City at Berkeley was the lucky winner. Karen has been a Holly Twig member for several years. Congratulations to her. Please join us at our first meeting on January 14th. We meet at 10am in clubhouse one of Holiday City at Berkeley. We always love to welcome new members. If you have a few hours a month to spare and would like to be a part of our fundraising efforts, please stop in at 9:30am and join us for coffee and cake. You do not have to be a resident of Holiday City at Berkeley to become a member, so join us and bring a friend. 100% of the money we make at our fundraisers is turned over to the Auxiliary of Community Medical Center in order for them to purchase patient comfort items that are not included in the hospital’s budget. In recent years, we have helped provide blanket warmers, new food trays, and reclining chairs just to mention a few. Come out and join us…. You won’t be sorry you did.
