Sean P. Flynn, gave a special gi to each family who came to Christmas Mass here...a wonderful, inspira onal book tled “Rediscover Catholicism” by Ma hew Kelly. His hope is that this easy-to-read but powerful book will rekindle in you the most important prac ces and tradi ons that are at the core of our Catholic faith. This should also reinforce and, if necessary, help restore the confidence we all should enjoy and appreciate about Catholicism. If you were away and did not get a book yet, please ask the ushers for a copy, which is a gi from the pastor with the help of St. Mark’s Holy Name Society. If you did receive a copy, please accept the invita on to renew and deepen your faith and share that faith with those you love. Msgr. Flynn, Fr. Jose, Fr. Maynard, Deacon Mike Keary and the parish staff wish you a blessed New Year! Let’s make it the year where we rediscover Catholicism! Finding Joy in the New Year If you are experiencing sadness, remember that joy comes when we possess the thing we love and are free to delight in it. To obey and serve God and resist the desires of the flesh is not the path to servitude and glum, rather the path to fulfillment, freedom and joy. For as both gluƩony (intemperance in food) and lust (intemperance of sexuality) are fleeƟng pleasures, the sense of hopelessness comes along when the claim is, “I can’t help it!” The self discipline we place on ourselves does not put us in bondage, but frees us to truly possess ourselves. Surprisingly, St. Aquinas asserts that in many cases of addicƟon, talkaƟveness is the root cause. This may be because the talkaƟve do not tend towards true exchange of ideas and knowledge, the give and take of talking and listening. Just as lust uses a person to achieve some physical pleasure without true consideraƟon of the other as a person, the overly talkaƟve use other people as the “thing” to “talk at,” giving liƩle or no consideraƟon to the person they are speaking with. “The [talka ve] love to be the center of a en on and for some reason believe that others delight in them about as much as they delight in themselves,” explains Deacon Doug Mcmanaman. He added, “As long as they are talking, others have no choice but to listen. And the ma er of their conversa on will almost always center around themselves in some way, either directly or indirectly.” The selfish ChrisƟan is mournful and heavy in his presence. The grumpy man of discipline does not become the light of the world, but instead a burden to it. What we’re looking for in our discipline then is the sign of selflessness, and the greatest sign of it is cheerfulness! “You will live on in my love, if you keep my commandments…All this I have told you, so that my joy may be yours, and the measure of your joy may be filled up” (John 15:10-11). The Holy Family (Feast) Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14 Whoever honors his father will be gladdened by his own children, and when he prays he will be heard. Psalms 128:1-5 Lo, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the LORD. Colossians 3:12-21 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Luke 2:22-40 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. A New Year Resolution: New Hymnals! As noted in a previous bulletin, the pastor was exploring a resolution to some music limitations of the Ignatius Pew Missal. Initially, the hymns and antiphons in the missal were intended to be sung at the 4:30 PM, 8 AM and most 12 noon weekend Masses. The Voices songbooks were to be used at 10 AM and one 12 noon Mass a month. However, St. Mark’s has combined the best of both worlds by purchasing a hardbound hymnal from WLP titled, One in Faith. It offers a broader spectrum of music–chant, classic hymnody, gospel hymns, spirituals, contemporary and bilingual pieces— it’s all in there! Thanks go out to the pastor, Breath of Life youth ensemble and liturgy members for finding a solution to ring in (or rather sing in!) the New Year! #613 12/28/2014 Pg. 5 Parish News and Upcoming Events January Prayer Petitions by Marge Loenser Happy New Year, almost! We start off January with the feast of Mary, the Mother of God. A very appropriate way to start the year, for in the very wise words of Mother Theresa, "No Mary, no Jesus!" In His Body, our Blessed Lord carried only the DNA of Mary and her ancestors! This month we celebrate the Epiphany on the sixth. We think of those three wise men from the East bringing gold, frankincense and myrrh to the newborn King. I can't imagine riding on a camel from, say Persia to Bethlehem. I wouldn't care how many pillows you gave me, I would need immediate medical attention and some flea powder–but that's just me! Hats off to Balthasar, Melchior and Caspar! St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is celebrated on the 4th. She was the very first citizen of the USA to be canonized a saint. Mother Seton started the first Catholic parochial school system and the Daughters of Charity trace their origin to Mother Seton, who died in 1821. On the 28th, we celebrate Thomas Aquinas, who is noted for his thoughts and writings on philosophy and theology. One of his greatest writings is the Suma Theological. He wrote extensive hymns for the Holy Eucharist, including “Tantum Ergo Sacramentum,” which is a verse from his “Pange Lingua.” My dear sisters and brothers in Christ, let us pray through these saints for all the sick of our parish. Let us pray for those who have died, the unemployed, the lonely, the depressed, the alcoholics and drug addicts, and those addicted to gambling or pornography. Please pray for all the intentions written down so faithfully in our prayer petition books! May Jesus bless you abundantly in this coming New Year! Requesting English Tutors Within the Hispanic Community of St. Mark’s, there are a growing number of members who desire to learn English. Over the past 8 years, St. Mark’s Parish has trained volunteer from the parish, in collaboration with the Literacy Volunteers of Monmouth County. The Hispanic Community remains most grateful for this assistance. At the present, we are seeking both trained volunteer and those wishing to tutor English to our Hispanic Parishioners for the first time. Please note that Spanish is not required! Each tutor can set up a weekly meeting schedule according to his or her convenience. For information, please call Diana Zuna at the rectory 732-449-6364 ext. 100. Many thanks! Reading this book and then putting its wisdom into practice in our lives will give us the best New Year ever, one with an ever-growing love for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
