Question of the Week
Q. Why do Catholics and Protestants have different versions of the Our Father? Whenever I go to the funeral or
wedding in a Protestant church I am reminded of it.
Which is correct?
A. The good news is that for the most part we agree. The
translations we use may be a bit different in terms of using the
word ‘trespass’ or ‘debt’, but other than that most of the prayer
is the same. You are referring to the doxology, “For thine is the
kingdom, the power and the glory, forever and ever,” which
most Protestants use and which Catholics do not.
A doxology is a short hymn of praise. The prayer that we know
as the ‘Glory Be’ is an example of a doxology used by Catholics. The words used by Protestant Christians at the end of the
Our Father is another example. Of course, this doxology is
familiar to Catholics as well as we use it at every Mass shortly
after reciting the Our Father.
The practice of concluding a prayer with a doxology or literally
‘words of praise’ date back to our Jewish ancestors. There are
examples of this practice in the Hebrew Scriptures. While neither the Gospels of Matthew nor Luke, who give us an account
of the Our Father, include the doxology, by the first century it
became common to add the doxology when praying the Our
Father at Mass in the eastern half of the Roman Empire but not
in the western part of the Empire.
Monks who transcribed the bible and who were familiar with the
addition of the doxology at Mass would sometimes add the doxology to manuscripts of the bibles they were copying. Scripture
scholars today, however, recognize that it was not part of the
prayer as first taught by Jesus and versions of the bible that
include the doxology usually note that it is an addition to the
original text.
The Tyndale bible, which dates to 1525 A.D. and which became
the basis for the versions of the bibles used by most
Protestants in the English speaking world, did not include the
doxology. When Henry XIII separated from the Church of
Rome, he did not change the Our Father. Elizabeth I, however,
in an effort to rid the English Church from any similarity to
Rome ordered the addition of the doxology in Protestant bibles.
When all is said and done, it is a small difference and the doxology is a beautiful hymn of praise to God. There is nothing
wrong with including the doxology, especially when praying with
friends who are Protestant. It would be sad if we allowed prayer to be a source of division among Christians.
