Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.
Meanwhile the child grew to maturity, and
he was filled with wisdom; and God’s
favour was with him.

Have yourself a Merry Christmas
I was reminded this week of an advertisement, you
probably will have seen it. In it Santa is knocking
over the tree and breaking the decorations, the
voice over, comments that we all love the idea of
Christmas while they are there for the reality. I am
paraphrasing with that being the gist of the
message. So today I thought I would write about
herbs and other suggestions that can help with for
many the reality of the Christmas season, and its
stresses and strains.
We all love Christmas, well I really do. I love the
preparation, even the shopping, the cooking, yes
the madness of it all. But this can for many be very
stressful. It is important that we keep a sense of
ourselves in all that is going on. Nice relaxing
herbs such as chamomile, valerian, passionflower
can give that relaxing space that is needed at this
stressful time. Give yourself the time to take these
herbs as a comforting tea. There are many well
blended teas on the market that are tasty and
relaxing so as I said give yourself the time to make
a cup of tea and drink it slowly not on the go.
We also need some me time. I find that some form
of exercise even just a walk can greatly relieve
stress, We are fortunate that the weather is staying
mild so there is less call to stay by the fire. So go
out, you do have the time, and walk. If you need an
excuse, walk the dog, walk to the shops, mass, etc.
you give yourself excuses not to, so now I am
giving you some excuses to do it.
Don’t forget your digestion in all that is going on.
How many of you have gone to the numerous
Christmas parties. We eat and drink so much more
at this time of year. So party pooper that I am I say
to remember ‘all things in moderation’. You can
have those lovely pastry’s or sweets but you don’t
have to have all of them. And don’t forget your
water - have a glass of water throughout the day so
that you not only remain hydrated but it can help to
stop the picking, especially that box of chocolates
that someone left out in the office because ‘it’s
Christmas’.
Herbs such as chamomile or dandelion root can
help the lever and digestion, considerably under
strain at this time of year. Dandelion root has a
bitter taste and bitter herbs (simple they taste bitter
in the mouth) have been shown to stimulate
digestive juices and so aid digestion. Fennell,
peppermint or ginger can help to relieve that
bloated feeling particularly with too much rich
foods. Finally, I come to milk thistle, often
recommended for the morning after the night
before. As I said moderation in everything and the
best remedy for the morning after is moderation the
night before.

A recent press release from the Vatican stated that

24th, feast of Mary Help of Christians, patroness of
the Salesian order. The origin of the Shroud has

The new Audi Prologue concept has finally been released to the public and what a magnificent
car it is. The two-door four-seater provides a glimpse of Audi’s future design direction, with
elements of the exterior and parts of the evolutionary
interior destined to filter through to the next A6,
A7 and A8. Beyond that, a new A9 Coupe will

display made up of organic LED’s. It is purely digital
in the cabin, aside from the steering wheel mounted
buttons – another feature which will trickle down to
future production models.
Under the skin sits a 598bhp version of the 4.0-litre biturbo V8 from the Audi RS6. It sends 700NM of
torque through an eight-speed tiptronic gearbox and
Quattro all-wheel-drive. The 1,980kg Prologue covers
0-100km/hr in 3.7 seconds and emits 199g/km of Co2.
Carbon ceramic brakes, five-link suspension and allwheel steering have also been engineered. Rear wheels
can steer up to five degrees, while air-suspension and
controlled damping can adjust between a cushioned
ride or a more focused set-up.
This striking new-comer is only a few millimetres
shorter than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class saloon, but that
slippery and sculpted design helps mask this size well.
Huge touch-sensitive doors swing open and allow
access to one of the most technologically advanced
cabins ever created. You sit low, peering over the
sleek bonnet. The virtual cockpit in the all-new Audi
TT is still a revolutionary piece of technology, but
Audi has taken it to the next level with the Prologue.
In summary, let’s not forget that the Prologue is a
concept, and a long way from the finished article. It is
a great taste of what is to come from Audi. I will be
first in line to buy one…. assuming my lotto numbers
come up trumps between now and then!

Pork Fillet with Parma Ham & Pesto
Serves 4 – 6
2 X 400g pieces of pork fillet trimmed
12 slices Parma ham or Serrano ham
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 tbsp pesto
Dressing
1 tbsp pesto
6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Toasted pine nuts
Preheat the oven to 200C / Gas 6.
Place each pork fillet on a chopping board and
split open lengthwise being careful not to cut all
the way through.
Season with salt and pepper and smother the
length of the fillet with 2 tbsp of the pesto. Close
up the fillet and spread 1 tbsp of pesto on the
outside of the fillet.
Lay out the Parma ham, overlapping the slices so
it appears like one large sheet of ham.
Wrap the pork fillet in it so it covers it
completely.
Repeat the process for the second fillet.
Place both ham wrapped pork fillets in a roasting
dish and cover with foil.
Bake for 25 minutes, then remove the foil and
bake for another 5 - 10 minutes until the pork is
cooked through and ham is crispy.
Remove from the oven and let it rest for 10
minutes.
For the dressing, mix the pesto with the oil so
you have a loose dressing.
To serve: Slice the pork and drizzle some of
the pesto dressing on the pork and around the
plate, repeat with the pine nuts.
Apple Sauce
225g / 8oz cooking apples, peeled, cored
and chopped
½ lemon zest only
2 tbsp water
15g / ½ oz butter
1 tsp caster sugar
Put the apples in a saucepan with the
lemon zest and water. Cover and cook
over a low heat or in the microwave until
soft. Take off the heat and add in the
butter and sugar. Cool.
Baked Tomatoes
8 Tomatoes halved
Thyme leaves
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
Put the tomatoes in a gratin dish cut side
up. Scatter over the thyme leaves. Mix
the sugar and balsamic vinegar together
and pour over. Cook at 200C / Gas 6 for
15 – 20 minutes.

Year of Consecrated
Life begins
The Year of Consecrated Life began on November 30
with a Mass celebrated by Cardinal João Braz de Aviz
in St. Peter’s Basilica. The prefect of the Congregation
for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of
Apostolic Life took the place of Pope Francis, who was
in Istanbul on the final day of his apostolic journey to
Turkey.
The Mass was preceded by a November 29 prayer vigil
at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and by the
November 28 release of an apostolic letter by the
Pontiff to all consecrated persons-- that is, those who
have made vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience.
The year will conclude on February 2, 2016.
In his apostolic letter, Pope Francis said that the year’s
aims are “to look to the past with gratitude,” “to live
the present with passion,” and “to embrace the future
with hope.”

Our Peace Corner
This week I want to look at St. Joseph
We often leave him out of our thoughts at Christmas, yet he,
too, was essential to the mystery. Out of all men who ever
lived, Joseph, son of David, was chosen as the Spouse of the
Virgin Mother of Jesus, God’s Son. Joseph was given the
privilege to stand in God’s place, to take care of God’s own
son, to teach him and to be a model for him in his growing
to maturity. What greater privilege could he have had?
Along with the rearing of Jesus, Joseph was given the care
of God’s greatest creation, in Mary.
We know that it takes a saint to live with saints. Others
would not cope with the level of living and loving in a
household of pure sanctity. Joseph lived a heroic life with
Jesus and Mary, a completely selfless life, not looking to his
own interests, but theirs. Joseph’s life was really a hidden
life. He allowed his wife and adopted Son to shine in their
greatness, but this enabled his own great humility to shine
forth. Joseph was totally given to God’s will, and directed
by God’s Word and personal prayer.
His relationship with God was greatly enhanced by living
with Jesus and Mary. And yet, this Holy Family lived very
simply, with no luxuries, with none of the things that today
we seem to think are vital to our existence. Their luxury was
to have Jesus with them, and to have pure love in their
home. When we have this, we need nothing else. We have
everything.
Joseph teaches us that the essentials in life are: loving God,
loving your family, your neighbour, and doing God’s will at
every moment in the family! Joseph shows us that nothing
to do with family life is trivial. Everything is service to God
and your nearest neighbour. Family life is ‘laying down
your life’ in service to those who are closest to you, and
doing it very unselfishly. Even the smallest service we do
for each other can be real spiritual treasure if we join it to
that of Jesus in his life-time. This way you gain his merits
and you can offer this service to the Lord for the salvation
of souls or for someone’s healing if they are sick. St Therese
of Lisieux said that even if we lift a pin off the floor with
the motive of pure love for God, that we do something
really great that can save souls!
Knowing this makes family life very precious. It makes
family relationships very important for everyone’s spiritual
growth. The family is God’s own image on the earth: two
consecrated in love, producing the third. In other words love
giving birth to love! Love continuing to make its own image
ever new in children who reflect the position of Jesus in the
Holy family. The father represents God, the Father; the
mother represents Mary, and every child in Jesus’ place.

charming example of 19th century institutional

Getting Your Supports in Place
Information: Finding out how much sugar is in preprepared commercial baby foods could be an eyeopener. Decide you are going to cut out sugar for
baby, even if that means that you don’t buy any
commercial baby food. Beware of the catch-cry
“sugar-free”. The alternative/s could be worse. Look
to borrow, and possibly to buy, good books on
weaning foods from your nearest La Leche League
Group Library. The Leader/s can order a copy for you
to buy, if you find one particular book is particularly
suitable for you and your baby, and family. Google La
Leche League International and La Leche League of
Ireland for basic information, which can be
downloaded. Get the loan of “The Womanly Art of
Breastfeeding” by La Leche League, and read the
chapter on weaning foods. You may wish to consider
buying a copy, especially if you hope to have another
baby. Your nearest Leader/s will be happy to order for
you, if they don’t already have some copies for sale.
Or you can order online directly from La Leche
League of Ireland. Start with “The Womanly Art of
Breastfeeding”, if baby is in the early stages of
weaning. Then, as baby begins to get the hang of this
new business of eating elsewhere than at Mammy’s
breast, consider getting some of La Leche League’s
excellent books on weaning foods. You can borrow a
copy to start with. You can then buy a copy to keep.
Professional Support: We all need support,
especially with something as challenging as
overcoming an addiction, whether the addiction is to
person/s, substances, or activities such as eating or
gambling. Start the search for the professional you
need, if that is your judgement. Don’t stop till you find
someone you can work with, and make progress with.
Your Cheer-Leaders – Your Non-Judgmental
Supporting People: Do give it the time you need to
decide on one or two relatives or friends who you can
trust and rely on to support you, without judging you.
People who will listen and not judge you, although
they may confront you. They may also protect you
from critics. As long as you respect them, grab the
chance of such support and make the most of it, for
your own benefit and that of baby. Get them on board,
and be honest with them.
Keeping Non-supportive People At Bay
It is worth thinking about how to do this, especially if
people like that have a regular presence in your life,
which undermines your efforts. How will you prevent

CONFESSION
“ I absolve you from your sins”
1422 "Those who approach the sacrament of
Penance obtain pardon from God's mercy for the
offense committed against him, and are, at the same
time, reconciled with the Church which they have
wounded by their sins and which by charity, by
example, and by prayer labors for their conversion."
I. WHAT IS THIS SACRAMENT CALLED?
1423 It is called the sacrament of conversion
because it makes sacramentally present Jesus' call to
conversion, the first step in returning to the Father
from whom one has strayed by sin. It is called the
sacrament of Penance, since it consecrates the
Christian sinner's personal and ecclesial steps of
conversion, penance, and satisfaction.
1424 It is called the sacrament of confession, since
the disclosure or confession of sins to a priest is an
essential element of this sacrament. In a profound
sense it is also a "confession" - acknowledgment and
praise - of the holiness of God and of his mercy
toward sinful man.
It is called the sacrament of forgiveness, since by the
priest's sacramental absolution God grants the
penitent "pardon and peace."
It is called the sacrament of Reconciliation, because
it imparts to the sinner the live of God who
reconciles: "Be reconciled to God." He who lives by
God's merciful love is ready to respond to the Lord's
call: "Go; first be reconciled to your brother."
II. WHY A SACRAMENT OF
RECONCILIATION AFTER BAPTISM?

the magnitude of the gift God has given us in the

Embrace change and
become a happier
healthier you!
I always say it you do not need a new year date in
order to make changes to improve your health , as you
can change anytime you set your mind to it.
However a lot of people upon commencing anew year
will make all kinds of promises to themselves. Change
must happen in rider for anything to be different and it
is often the very first obstacle I help clients overcome.
In order to reach a point of a happier healthier you, you
need to be able to embrace change rather than resist it!
Making changes to our routines and lifestyles for many
can be very difficult. Many are even content to put up
with things which are not good for them, hurt them or
cause pain or ill health as its easier than actually
making the change. It may the habit of smoking or
drinking or not exercising or not going to bed early or
not drinking water or putting up with the headaches or
back-pain, and doing nothing about them…what habit
is it you would like to change.
Here are some life long tips to help you break those
habits you have been putting on the long finger.
Change is not easy but positive change can have an
amazing benefit to your health, your energy, your
loved ones, your sleep, your mood and so on. I
encourage you to give these a go!
1. Decide what it is you would like to or need to
change (if anything)
2. Change only one poor habit at a time! Many
decide to do all or nothing or too much at once
then they give up. The self-blame and guilt often
set in..adding more fuel to the vicious negative
cycle.
3. Write it out, whatever you commit to do or change
write it out clearly, mark it with a date so it is very
clear when you are starting from and then write
out all the benefits of making the change. Keep
this close to hand and read it every day.
4. Take each benefit and write them out individually
example on different dates in your diary or
calendar, set them as reminders on your phone,
put them in the book your reading at the moment,
stick them to the mirror, fridge wherever works
best for you as a constant reminder for you to keep
going.Giving up is not an option when it is
something you truly want.
5. Accept and acknowledge that you may feel a little
worse before you feel the immediate benefits of
the change depending on what you are working
on, e.g if quitting coffee you may have withdrawal
headaches for 2 days or so, so always cut down
gradually. Benefit better sleep, brighter skin, more
energy, healthier more energised liver and so on..
6. When the going gets tough… Be kind to yourself,

things which offer support.
7. Make out a list of new ways to reward yourself.

The Crib
The popularity of the Nativity scene or "crèche"
as it is sometimes called overseas, is one of the
most beloved and enduring symbols of
Christmas. All the more reason to be on our
guard just now as the move is on to remove this
beautiful Christmas tradition which originated in
Italy from St. Francis of Assisi in 1224.
St Francis wanted to bring the reality of the first
Christmas to ordinary people through a real life
representation of that first Christmas. The first
manger scenes involved real people and animals.
Later on figurines were used to depict the nativity
of the Lord Jesus.
The ‘modernisers’ are out in force in some
countries at this time to try and destroy the
custom of erecting a crib, a reminder of the great
event which took place 2000 years ago.

Carols
The custom of singing carols at Christmas is of
English origin. During the middle ages, groups of
singers would travel around from house to house
singing ancient carols; in some cases donations
were accepted for a charity. The word carol
means "song of you." Most of the popular old
carols we sing today were written in the
nineteenth century. ‘Caroling’ reminds us of the
angels who brought the good news to the
shepherds and sang at the birth of Christ, "Glory
to God in the highest and peace to men of
goodwill."
Another beautiful Christmas custom. Don’t let it
be taken away also.
Gift Exchange
The custom of gift-giving on Christmas goes
back to the first Christmas when the three kings
from the East arrived sometime after the Baby
Jesus was born and brought Him gifts of gold,
frankincense and myrrh.

Father Christmas / Santa Claus
Everybody knows the origin of Santa Claus- St
Nicholas of Myra was a great Bishop in Turkey
in the 4th century, who gave secret gifts to needy
families. Santa Claus, or St Nicholas, continues
this lovely custom - although now awfully
commercialised - to this very day.
Ask St Nicholas for something worthwhile this
Christmas when we remember the birth of the
Son of God in a stable in Bethlehem over 2000
years ago!
Every Christmas is a mini-preparation for the
eventual final coming of Jesus when He will
come to judge the living and the dead.

Risk Factors for Dementia
The following risk factors can increase a
person’s chances of developing one or more
kinds of dementia.
Age : The risk increases with advancing age.
Alcohol use : Most studies conclude that
drinking large amounts of alcohol increases the
risk of dementia, whilst drinking a moderate
amount can be protective.
Atherosclerosis : The accumulation of fats and
cholesterol in the lining of the artherities,
coupled with an inflammatory process that leads
to a thickening of the vessel walls, can hinder
blood from getting to the brain. This can lead
to strokes or other brain injury.
Diabetes : Poorly controlled diabetes is a risk
factor for stroke and cardiovascular disease
related events. The risk of vascular dementia is
consequently in creased.
Down syndrome : Many people with down
syndrome develop early- onset AD, with signs
of dementia by the time they reach middle age.
Mental illness : Depression is associated with
mild mental impairment and cognative function
decline.
Smoking : Smokers are prone to diseases that
slow or stop blood from getting to the brain.
The next Alzheimer Cafe meeting will be held
on Wednesday 28th January in McAuley Place

meals to Ebola patients and
hungry children...
Mary’s Meals is delivering food aid to
thousands of people affected by the Ebola
outbreak in Liberia – including patients infected
by the deadly virus – following the launch of an
emergency relief effort. Under normal
circumstances, Mary’s Meals reaches more than
128,000 impoverished children across Liberia
each day, attracting them to the classroom with
a nutritious meal in school. However, the recent
crisis has brought a temporary halt to the
charity’s feeding programme in the country,
with all schools now closed.
Founded in 2002, Mary’s Meals runs school
feeding programmes in 12 countries – across
Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America
and the Caribbean – and is now reaching
923,572 hungry children every day they attend
school. Whilst delivering school meals is the
charity’s prime focus, it has a long history of
providing emergency relief assistance.

The Four Marks of Christ’s Church pt 3
In our previous articles, we have examined the
statements in the historic Creeds of Christianity regarding
the Church; specifically, that the Church is One, that
Jesus only established One Church; and that the Church is
Holy by virtue of being the Body of Christ as well as the
holy lives of the Saints.. No other denomination,
fellowship or convention can legitimately make these
statements. We now turn our attention to the two
remaining marks of the Church: its Catholicity and
Apostolicity.
3. Catholic.
The One Church of Christ is Catholic, that is, universal or
worldwide. It is a Church that embraces different
cultures and nationalities and adapts itself and its liturgy
to those cultures, without compromising the core of what
it really believes. Pope John Paul II referred to this
adaptation as inculturation. But rather than being divided
along national or ethnic lines, the Catholic Church
wherever it is found maintains the essentials of the Faith
and the heart of its liturgy.
Wherever one travels in the world, one will find this
Church. Every minute of every day, somewhere in the
world, the liturgy of the Eucharist is being celebrated.
And of all the world’s institutions, only the Catholic
Church remains faithful to standing up for the cause of
human dignity and human life, even in the halls of the
United Nations. Only the Catholic Church is capable and
qualified to address the problems of the world as a whole.
The Church is the ultimate unifier: the solution for
problems such as racism and sexism. In the Catholic
Church, mankind is reunited, made one in Christ.
4. Apostolic.
The One Catholic Church is
apostolic, built upon the foundation of the Apostles (Eph.
2:19-22). Today, only one Church can rightfully claim to
trace its lineage back to Christ and His Apostles. Only
One Church has an unbroken line of succession, in
complete unity with the successor of the Apostle Peter.
The oldest of Protestant denominations, that founded by
Martin Luther, has only been in existence for 500 years;
and even the Eastern Orthodox churches have been
completely severed from the Catholic Church for less
than 600 years.
When we look at the history and the legacy of the
Catholic Church, we must accept that its claims are true.
It is indeed the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church
mentioned in the Creeds, and the One Church referred to
by Jesus. And while we uphold the Church’s teaching
that much of Christian truth can be found in other
“denominations”, only Christ’s One Church possesses the
fullness of that truth.

Dear Grace
I wish I could help my children come to a
better understanding of what Christmas is
truly about as we are unable to spend a lot
of money on expensive presents.
Can you help me?
Your situation is one that I am certain many parents
go through every Christmas season. I believe,
though, that you are being presented with a
possibly unforgettable opportunity. Giving and
receiving gifts at Christmas is a wonderful
tradition. The problem comes when we focus too
much on the gifts and not enough on the “Giver.”
A gift is defined as something given to show
friendship and affection. Christmas is most definitely
about giving – the giving of love. The birth of the
Lord Jesus Christ was the greatest gift ever bestowed
on mankind. God, who is love, gave Himself. He
willingly took on a human nature in order to suffer and
die so that we might live.
If you want to make Christmas meaningful and
different this year for the people around you, make
it one of love.
I guarantee you that if you stop and consider
everyone in your life, and look deeply, you will see
that each one is in need of love – we all are in one
way or another. It may sound too easy to say, “Give
people love this Christmas.”
But do you know what? One cannot give what one
does not have.
In order to give true love, we must first be filled with
true love. And that, my friends, is to be filled with
love for God. How do we do that?
The best way is
so simple. Read Hisstory. Read it to your children! No
one who reads the story of Jesus Christ found in the four
Gospels of the New Testament in a prayerful way can
come away without falling in love with Him.
And when you fall in love with Him and stay in love
with Him, your life will change. Your Christmas will
be different!
Surprise your family this year! Don’t spend your last
few days of preparation in shopping. Spend them instead
in finding ways in which to lead them closer to the
“Giver” in the things you do. Give your children
something valuable to model!

weekend to explore contemplative life in a
monastery without having to face unwanted
questions from family and friends!
...but if you just disappear for a Saturday...well you
might just be gone shopping! Our monastic day
aims to facilitate those who feel an attraction to our
contemplative way of life but for whom it might
also be difficult to take a full weekend off.
Coming to Nuns’ Island for a day to hear about
what our way of life entails, to share in some of our
daily prayer and to meet others, who are also
searching, will help to clarify for you whatever is
stirring in your heart. The day is intended for
women between the ages of 21 and 40 who feel
that God may be calling them to religious life. To

Scripture (Catechism 101–141)
Scripture, by which we mean the Old and New
Testaments, was inspired by God (2 Tim. 3:16).
The Holy Spirit guided the biblical authors to write
what he wanted them to write. Since God is the
author of the Bible, and since God is truth itself
(John 14:6) and cannot teach anything untrue, the
Bible is free from all error in everything it asserts to
be true.
Some Christians claim, "The Bible is all I
need," but this notion is not taught in the Bible
itself. In fact, the Bible teaches the contrary
idea (2 Pet. 1:20–21, 3:15–16).
The "Bible alone" theory was not believed by
anyone in the early Church.
It is new, having arisen only in the 1500s after the
Protestant revolt. The ‘Bible alone’ theory is a
"tradition of men" that nullifies the Word of God,
distorts the true role of the Bible, and undermines
the authority of the Church of Jesus (Mark 7:1–8).
Although popular with many "Bible Christian"
churches, the "Bible alone" theory simply does not
work in practice. Historical experience disproves it.
Each year we see additional splintering among
"Bible-believing" religions.
When the error of ‘Bible alone’ is combined with
the error of ‘personal interpretation’ the result is a
recipe for disaster as each person sets up their own
‘church’ to support their own personal
interpretation of Sacred Scripture…
Today there are tens of thousands of competing
denominations, each insisting its interpretation of
the Bible is the correct one. The resulting divisions
have caused, and continues to cause, untold
confusion among millions of sincere but misled
separated Christians. Just open up the Yellow Pages
of your telephone book and see how many different
denominations are listed, each claiming to go by the
"Bible alone," but no two agreeing on exactly what
the Bible teaches!
Compare this to the teaching of the One, Holy,
Catholic and Apostolic Church, founded by Jesus
Christ, and able to trace its teachings back to the
Apostles; a Church which has the same set of rules
in every parish, in every country and continent!
This is what the word ‘Catholic’ means, universal!
We know this for sure: The Holy Spirit cannot be
the author of this confusion (1 Cor. 14:33). God
cannot lead people to contradictory beliefs, because
His truth is one.
How do we avoid all these ‘stumbling blocks?’ The
answer is simple – read and love your bible; it is the
word of God – but in the other hand have your copy
of the Catechism given to us by the infallible
Church which gave us the bible in the 4th century!
