“WORKING FOR A POSITIVE LIFESTYLE AND HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT IN OUR COMMUNITY”
BRAD & KEITH’S STORIES OF PRETTY BEACH PRIMARY
P
retty Beach Primary was opened in 1927, however it
was 1952 that Brad Berry and Keith Peaker remember
well; it was their first day in Kindergarten. The head master
was Mr. Ingram and the school had approximately 100
pupils and 3 teachers. By the time these two boys finished
in 1958, the numbers had reduced to an estimated 80
pupils. In 1955 a new headmaster was appointed, the
appropriately named Mr. Kane, by name and nature as
Brad “fondly” recalls.
When talking with Keith and Brad, it is clear they carry
many fond memories of those early school days - some of
the events would not happen today, however they are both
proud of the school’s achievements. They recall the early
morning assemblies, the raising of the flag and the singing
of “God Save the Queen”. Brad tells of the day in 1954 when
the entire school caught the ferry to Gosford and stood in
the heat as they waved to the Queen and Prince Philip as
their train passed by without stopping.
There were many memorable school days, such as
Empire Day when the children took months to build a
huge bonfire. There were happy memories of “mischief ”
with the fireworks, especially the “Tom Thumbs”. To
celebrate the 1956 Olympics, medals were made with gold
milk bottle tops wrapped around a penny and presented
to event winners; Brad proudly says he won the boxing
against a Year 6 boy!

Not long after the end of the Second World War, Pretty
Beach Primary School had students from many different
nationalities. There was work for their parents at a school
uniform factory located at Killcare Heights.
Keith recalls that discipline was handed out by way
of wearing a dunce’s hat and standing in the corner. The
children had various jobs around the school, such as
putting the rubbish in the incinerator or collecting and
distributing the daily milk to each child.
Sport played a big part in school life. Major sports days
with other schools were held in Woy Woy and PB School
held its sports days on the sand at low tide in Hardys Bay.
The school produced some fine athletes; Allan Cardy went
on to become a Rugby Union International Wallaby and
Brad played for South NSW against the touring Great
Britain Rugby League team.
There is some great history from the school which
needs to be recorded, so thanks to Brad and Keith for their
fond memories.

BAY NEWS – December 2014

President’s Message
Welcome to our Christmas edition of Bay News.
In this issue, we highlight some history of
Killcare and reminisce about Pretty Beach
primary in years gone by; we report on widely
varied topics such as our local Fire Service and
its timely warning to our citizens, the Pretty
Beach Primary School with its busy programme
of activities for the children, a profile on a
widely-respected citizen and a surf club report,
in addition to other features of interest.
We extend a warm welcome to all new
members and are proud, too, of our rapidlyincreasing membership ranks. We particularly
wish to thanks the many people supporting us
with much appreciated donations and remind
everybody that new members are always welcome.
We always look forward to receiving the
community’s comments and particularly wish
to thank the many people who are working so
hard to assist in achieving recent successful
outcomes.
We extend our warmest greetings to all for a
safe and happy festive season.
Best Wishes to all
Adrian Williams
President
Adjacent to areas variously known as Mount
Pleasant(now Wagstaffe) and Wards Bay (later Hardys
Bay), European settlers arrived in about 1822. But
Killcare was largely unsettled until 1912 when property
developer, Arthur Rickard, identified the beach and
rugged coastal bluffs as a holiday destination. He bought
60 hectares from Manessah Ward for 680 pounds (or
$1360), subdividing it into 130 lots marketed as Killcare
Extension Estate Woy Woy from October 1914.
“Rickard and Co. Ltd. are opening up a new
subdivision at Woy Woy which is named the Killcare
Estate” newspapers wrote. “Those who have spent a
holiday at Woy Woy will realise the appropriateness of
the new name. Rickard and Co. Ltd. report demand for
home and holiday camp sites is well sustained”.
Ward’s father, William, bought the land for 37
pounds ($74) in 1836. With his wife Catherine they
raised 10 children while logging timber and running
trading vessels.
The area was described by Captain James Cook in
1770 and explored by Governor Arthur Phillip in 1789.
The first known European settler in the traditional
lands of the Guringai people was James Mallen, who
had cleared and cultivated 4ha of his 20ha by 1828.
Other 1830’s settlers included Patrick Mulhall at
Mount Pleasant, later sold to Captain George Wagstaffe
in 1890, and William Spears at Somerset Place, now
Pretty Beach.
Mariner Daniel Joyce bought Mallen’s property in
1859 but was forced to mortgage it for 400 pounds
($800). After he defaulted, Robert Henry (Harry)
Hardy bought the property in 1865. Hardy grew grapes
for wine until about 1908. Hardy’s land became part of
Rickard’s Pretty Beach Extension subdivision by 1920.
In January 1935, the Federation of Bush Clubs
invited a district surveyor to hike around Killcare
where “every hill gained fresh far-reaching views down
the coast past Barrenjoey to Manly”.
“A TOWN LIKE KILLCARE”
M
area Donnelly published this article “A Town
like Killcare” in a series published in a Sydney
newspaper a few years back.
Despite the deprivations of the Great Depression
in the summer of 1933, furnished cottages on the
southeastern tip of Brisbane Water were fully occupied.
Surfing at patrolled Killcare Beach was popular with
holiday-makers although “spending was considerably
restricted”, a Wagstaffe Point correspondent reported.

Thirty years later, Linda considers the move one
of the best decisions she and her husband could have
made. The relaxed, community atmosphere so loved
by locals is the perfect antidote to the pressures of the
legal profession and has enabled Linda and Alan to
raise a family in a healthy, safe environment.
Despite their sometimes hectic schedules, both
Linda and Alan give back to the community, Linda
helping the surf club and the primary school with free
legal advice and Alan’s company building the Pretty
Beach Preschool. They are regular volunteers at Pretty
Beach Primary as well as supporting the surf club
Nippers.
While their life in Hardys Bay provides the balance
that the family loves, they also have the opportunity
to experience country life at their rural property
near Gloucester. So they enjoy getaways to the farm
to check on the cattle, cut protea flowers Linda has
grown and enjoy starry, peaceful nights in front of the
fire toasting marshmallows.
Linda remembers fondly the communal barbecues
at the Killcare bottle shop and Friday night raffles and
dinner at the RSL. Over the years, Hardys Bay has
become much livelier, with many more people. But
it’s not lost its serenity and community atmosphere
and is still a beautiful and friendly place to live, work
and raise a family.

BUSY YEAR AT PRETTY BEACH
PRIMARY
A
s another busy year
for our Pretty Beach
primary school concludes,
Principal Ms Deborah
Callendar reported on
a hive of activity as the
children participated in
so many events such as
the Junkyard Orchestra at
Erina Fair and the school
dance troupe performed
at the Central Coast
Dance Festival.
The Year 5 & 6 students travelled to Bathurst for
3 fun filled days. While there they visited Scenic
World, the Hartley historic Site, the Sheep and Cattle
show and went gold panning at Bathurst. They visited
also visited Jenolan Caves on the return journey.
The excursion was a meaningful experience for our
students as part of their unit of study on Australian
Colonies.
While the Year 3 & 4 students enjoyed two action
packed days at the overnight Aussie Bush Camp at
Kincumber. Some of the activities included archery,
bush-craft, giant swing, high ropes and rock climbing...
and of course a campfire. Our students also enjoyed a
County Fair during the evening.
The aim of these activities was to promote
team work, problem solving and help strengthen
relationships.
Students were extremely excited to purchase books
at the school Book Fair presentation in the Library.
Due to the all that supported this event the school was
were to purchase a wide range of additional books for
our library.
SURF CLUB ART SHOW
E
ach year over summer, qualified members of
Killcare Surf Life Saving Club are responsible
for the safety of more than 35,000 beach goers. Last
season alone, they gave up a collective 3,015 hours,
or over a year of working days, performing 278
rescues and preventative actions, 14 of those with
no equipment and assisting three potentially serious
spinal injuries in the waves.
Even with a completely volunteer work force, it
costs hundreds of thousands of dollars every year
to provide the service, with new equipment always
needed, older equipment needing maintenance,
training, uniforms - the list goes on.
The Annual Killcare Art Show Fundraiser is
our major fundraiser for the year. It has garnered
an enviable reputation as much, much more than a
community-driven art show. The KSLSC Art Show is
highly anticipated by many holiday-makers and those
lucky enough to call the Peninsula home as a rare
regional show of high-quality art.
The 2014-15 show will be no exception, with a
great roster of artists offering high-quality, original
pieces at affordable prices. We’ll also have a range of
cards and gifts, as well as club t-shirts and swimwear
available.
The show starts with opening night festivities on
the 27th of December, then from 10am to 6pm every
day through to the 11th of January.
Please bring your friends, bring your family and
help us to help you.
KILLCARE HEIGHTS GARDEN CLUB
T
he Garden Club is just coming to the end of a
busy and wonderful year. The club meets at
various locations according to its busy programme.
This year members enjoyed a wide range of outings
including a visit to Eryldene, the Camellia Garden in
Gordon, guided walks in both the Botanical Gardens
in Sydney and Muogamarra State Park at Cowan to
enjoy the spring flowers and a visit to the Wallis Creek
Water Gardens at Mulbring. An annual highlight is
the local garden ramble which this year saw members
visiting gardens along Araluen Drive and Fraser Road.
In November a number of club members were
joined by other local garden clubs on a Garden Tour
of New Zealand which included a visit to the Taranaki
Garden Festival in New Plymouth.

RFS REPORT
K
illcare Wagstaffe RFB has been hard at work over
the winter months preparing for the 2014-2015
Bush Fire Season. You may notice some new faces in
the Brigade as we have had 6 new members complete
their training, bringing the total number of Brigade
members to 30 strong. We hold weekly training and
equipment maintenance sessions on Wednesday
nights at 7.30pm so feel free to pop by with any
questions or to say hello.
Open Day
We held our annual open day at the Hardys Bay
foreshore in September with great crowds learning
about fire safety and participating in our live kitchen
fire scenarios. It was terrific to see the high level of
community support that we are privileged to have in
our area. Thank you to everyone who took time out of
their day to come along.
2014 -2015 Fire Season
As the fire season is upon us, it is important to
prepare our homes for Summer. Simple tasks such
as clearing leaves from gutters and eves, removing
flammable materials from around the house (such as
firewood, leaf litter and repairing any holes or cracks
in walls and roofs) and trimming back vegetation can
greatly increase your home’s chance of survival in the
event of a bush fire. The Rural Fire Service can assist
infirm, disabled or elderly residents with these tasks
through our AIDER programme, please visit the
NSW RFS website at http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/
and search “AIDER” for more information or call 02
8741 4955
The AIDER program is designed for people
who have limited domestic support available from
family, relatives, friends or other services. This could
include older people, people living with a disability,
and people who are already receiving community
assistance and services. Their property must also be
on bush fire prone land (land that can support a bush
fire or be subject to bush fire attack).
AIDER services can include:

trained, there are a few things beach goers can do to
assist us in keeping you safe. So when you are at the
beach this summer, we ask you to please remember
the following:
- Always swim between the red and yellow flags.
“WE CANT SAVE YOU IF WE CAN’T SEE YOU”.
The red and yellow flags mark the patrolled area and
the area that is safest for beach goers to swim.
• If you do get into trouble and need help in the
water, raise your arm, shout for help, float on
your back and stay calm until help arrives.
• Look for the safety signs and ask a life saver
about safety at the beach and where to swim.
• Swim with a friend.
• Always watch your children.
We thank you all for your support of the Killcare
SLSC and by following these guidelines, you will be
helping us to help you.

The newly-formed community-based charity,
Killy Cares, is gradually starting to provide the
type of support that was envisaged at its inception
while at the same time fine-tuning its Strategic
Plan. A recent example of assistance we provided
was assisting an elderly couple who, because of illhealth and the absence of family living locally, were
struggling to prepare their home of 40 years for sale
ahead of their move to the north coast where they
will be closer to family. Killy Cares volunteers assisted
with some aspects of the clean-up of the home and
the disposal of unwanted furniture and personal
effects. Volunteers are also gearing up to assist other
community members who, for various reasons, are
in need either practical or emotional support not
otherwise provided by other existing community or
government services.
The Killy Cares website is under development and
will be launched shortly. In the meantime, Killy Cares
continues to engage with other support networks
in the local and wider community with a view to
determining how it might partner with them to
provide the optimum levels of support to community
members in need.
The next opportunity to support Killy Cares will be
at Carols by the Waterfront on Sunday evening, 21st
December. Easily identifiable volunteers will move
through the crowd collecting donations in buckets.
As always, we hope the people of our community
will show their usual generosity and compassion by
donating to our very own local charity.
If you are interested in volunteering with Killy
Cares please contact Stephen Hinks, Cathy Baker or
Sarah Bolt or email us at [email protected]

Bouddi Wildflowers
Right now, the wildflowers are wonderful along either
side of Hawkes Head Road. As you head towards the gate
into Bouddi National Park to walk to Box Head, there are
swathes of flannel flowers all through areas burnt out by
the last bushfires. There are many other varieties – fringe
lilies, boronia, native fuschia, mountain devils, fern-leaf
banksias, red blossom on young melaleucas – all doing well
after recent rain. Many other locations in and around the
park are just as lovely. Take your camera.
GCC address Bay Priorities
Gosford City Council have reacted quickly to some of
the “Bay Priorities” put to them by the HBRG. The seawall
has had some temporary but solid repairs completed and
the RSL Creek Bridge resurfaced. Other items that have
been addressed are the wooden picnic tables and benches
as well as work beginning on the Stanley Street playground.
Following a HBRG meeting the “Alcohol free area” signs
were withdrawn. Although a number of items are still to
be addressed, under the new management the Bay at last
is receiving some attention. It is also recognized that a
number of the items are remedial works, we can now look
forward to some more substantial projects.
