This year there is an array of works by people
of all ages from within our community incorporating the word SPACE in the title of their
piece. Why not cast your vote for ‘Best in Show’
and ‘Best Under 12’ categories and pick up
some raffle tickets for your chance to win some
fantastic prizes. It is guaranteed to be great
day out for the family.
The CLOSING CELEBRATIONS will be the
culmination of the show and we also hope to
see you there so come and enjoy a glass of wine
or something softer and meet the artists (your
fellow entrants?). The Under 12s entrants will
receive a small gift and a certificate of participation, the viewers choice awards will be presented and our great raffle will be drawn.

Sunday 5th October
Following the highly successful PhoTTex Photography Exhibition in June we are pleased to
announce a further exhibition is to be held at Hardys Bay Community Church Hall over
the October Long Weekend, 4th, 5th and 6th October.
The display will include the works of local photographers : Fiona Lambell, Dale Montgomery, Jeremy Lynton-Mann, Terry Wilson, Michelle Burgess and Brendon & Jude Weston.
Many of the works have already won international acclaim and many are new works not
yet shown publicly.
The subject matter is a mix of local, national and international photography - all stunning
and all for sale.
The local Marine Rescue is to benefit from a portion of the profits so come along and support them and the local creative community as well.

Leopard Seal on Killcare Beach
Early morning beach walkers bumped into this leopard seal on Killcare beach on Saturday 20th September. National Parks rangers and ORCCA representative Ronny Ling,
were quickly on the scene to protect both the seal and beach goers.
TT has spoken to Ronny who confirms that this same seal was up at Stockton on August
28th and was also seen around the Spit bridge area on September 15/16. Ronny also
said that while the animal was a little underweight after his huge swim from Antarctica,
his health appeared to be on the improve. If anyone sights him or any another seal
again please call ORCCA on 02 9415 3333, so they can keep monitoring his progress.
He returned to the water at about 5.15pm having spent a relaxing day in the sun.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTIVITY
Cheerleading/dance school holiday workshop with
Mikayla Holt, a NRL Parramatta Eels Cheerleader in
2014. This is a fun and exciting opportunity for all ages
and standards to learn dance, perform new routines and
meet new friends. A great way to spend a day in your
school holidays!

KILLY CARES INAUGURAL FUNDRAISER - A SUCCESS
The inaugural fundraising event for the newly established local charity, Killy Cares, was held at Bells on September 12 and
was a great success. The committee of Killy Cares would like to thank everyone who attended or otherwise supported this
event. It was a great example of the generosity of locals and their desire to be part of something that will, in both the short
and long term, benefit members of our community. After paying expenses associated with the lunch, approximately $4500
was raised. This provides a solid financial base upon which we can build to ensure Killy Cares can support people in need
not only through the volunteering efforts of community members but also where services or equipment may need to be
purchased on behalf of an individual. The committee has drawn up a tentative list of individuals who may need the support
or help of Killy Cares and as more people become aware of how Killy Cares can help, we expect that our list will grow. We
are aware that many services already exist within the local and wider community and will take steps to ensure that Killy
Cares does not unnecessarily duplicate these services. As we become more established we will have a dedicated website
which will provide information about the aims and intent of Killy Cares, ways in which residents can support it, and links to
other organisations with similar aims. If you have any questions or comments about Killy Cares, please feel free to contact
us by sending an email to [email protected]. Killy Cares will be selling raffle tickets and other items at the Pretty
Beach Markets on the October long weekend.

SHORIN RYU SHORINKAN KARATE AT
WAGSTAFFE HALL?
International Film Fight Choreographer & Shorin Ryu Karate Master
Greg Van Borssum & his family recently moved to Killcare. Greg is
interested in teaching children in the local area the martial arts/
self defence disciplines/techniques. Greg has over 37 years of
international experience in the Martial Arts with over 25 years in
Shorin Ryu Karate.
What is Karate? Karate is a unique art with which one can develop
the ability to defend oneself while at the same time cultivate qualities
of the mind such as perseverance, confidence, humility and concentration.
Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan Karate is characterised by its speed and
daring together with precise techniques in moving from defence to
attack. It is a discipline for tempering the body and mind to instill in
the individual an attitude of proper behaviour, and honourable action.
Karate-do also involves the cultivation of a student’s compassion and morality through the acquisition of the essence of the skill itself.
Some 90% of all Karate systems known today come from Okinawan
Karate with Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan Karate-do having the
longest history among the various karate styles, dating back 600
years.
At first the student wishing to learn Karate-do must shape up through
basic training (Kihon) before being assigned the training (Kata) or
form, which should be foremost in importance. Kata is a system of
practice designed to develop defensive and attacking movements
and an understanding of certain natural laws. When studied over long
periods of time, these movements and laws become second nature.
The student moves onto practice, pre-arranged sparring with partners
and finally they are moved into free sparring (Kumite).
Shorin-Ryu Karate has survived the ages and it will continue to be a
significant discipline in years to come. It teaches students in a style
which attempts to retain its purity of philosophy, tradition, and history.
It is an art of the mind as well as of the body, seeking the qualities of
correct manner, honest behaviour, kindness and politeness, in conjunction with the development of physical Karate Techniques.

TURO PARK EXTENSION UPDATE
On Friday 19 September, members of the Committee met on
site with the new Manager of Culture and Corporate Business
Operations at Council, Mr Phil Cantillon, together with Kim
Radford and Councillor Deanne Bocking, to discuss our proposed draft plan submitted to Council on 25 April. The Council is generally supportive of the draft plan, and pleased that
the community is supporting local developments in this way.
It will refer a couple of points to Council staff, to ensure compliance with required Council standards, and will advise us of
the anticipated costs for carrying out this work. We'll keep
you posted on progress, and hope that we will all be in a position to proceed so that planting can take place during the appropriate weather after the heat of summer, in March next
year. It will be a great improvement once completed, and we
look forward to hearing your ideas for future projects to enhance our daily life in this area. A number of you already
have ideas, I know!

What could spoil retirement?

Among the speakers on Sunday October 12 at Hardys Bay Club will
be Mr Jim Longley, the Chief Executive at NSW’s Department of
Ageing. Along with Dr Jeanette Martin and representatives from
select local service providers, the event will also provide answers to
questions about ageing such as:
What to expect as we get older, health hazards in retirement, what's normal, caring for someone, what help is
available, how to stay positive.
Entitled “It’s attitude, not age”, the seminar is for those who are
caring for elderly family and those wondering how to handle what
could lie ahead for themselves.
Hosted by Hardys Bay Community Church, Pastor Stephen Hinks
says, “If 50 is the new 40, there’s a big space between ‘mid-life’ and
‘old age’. For those in that space wanting to enjoy life ahead and
especially retirement, this is a very informative session on ageing
positively.”

New Playground Equipment for Stanley St. Park – Killcare
Following an approach by Council in April regarding a proposed park
upgrade, WTKCA has contributed $1,826 to fund installation of
swings. The swings will supplement the Geo-climber proposed by
Council.
Installation of both items is scheduled to be carried out before the
Christmas school holidays. Soft-fall surface will also be installed.
