such a beautiful time. First of all, the Art and Environment volunteer

looked fantastic for Christmas. That was the doing of the Art and

Next weekend, Catholics will celebrate the Epiphany. I plan to

Santo Niño / Infant of Prague
Our Cathedral Filipino Network invites you to join
our annual celebration to honor the image of Our Lord
as a child.
Whether you knew him as Santo Niño or as the Infant
of Prague, come pray with us at the 11:00am Mass on
Saturday morning, January 10, 2015. Bring your
personal statue to be blessed.
Do you shop at Jewel?
Are you saving the green stamps for Cuisinart
cookware? If you are not, we are!!!
Last year the Jewel promotion featured stamps for
dishware. Your collective response to that appeal
was 16 sets (4 table settings of four). They were all
shared, some to parishioners and others to House of
Good Shepherd who help families with domestic
violence start a new household. As one parishioner
said, “I have never had a matching set of four for 4
people in my entire life!”
So if you have any extra not-to-be-used green
stamps throughout these next few months, please
consider dropping them off in the collection or at
the rectory to the attention of Fr. John Boivin.
The last day for these stamps to be given is
Christmas Day; the last day to be redeemed is
January 7th. Please drop them off before New
Year’s Day.

Ever to thy heart be dear! Blest are ye beyond all measure, Thou happy father, mother mild! Guard

you, Guide you safely through the wild!

*Once In Royal David's City is a Christmas carol originally written as poem by
Cecil Frances Alexander. The carol was first published in 1848 in Miss Cecil
Humphreys' hymnbook Hymns for little Children. A year later, the English organist
Henry John Gauntlett discovered the poem and set it to music. Cecil Alexander is
also remembered for her hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful.
"Royal David's City" refers to Bethlehem, which the New Testament records as the
historical birthplace of King David, an ancestor of Jesus Christ. Theologically,
Alexander's poem expands a little upon the childhood of Jesus Christ, which is not
told in any detail in any of the Four Gospels. Being a children's poem, it largely
dwells upon the more palatable aspects of the Nativity story.
**"Silent Night" (German: Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht) is a popular Christmas carol.
The original lyrics of the song Stille Nacht were written in Austria by the priest
Father Joseph Mohr and the melody was composed by the Austrian headmaster Franz
Xaver Gruber. In 1859, John Freeman Young (second Bishop, Episcopal Diocese of
Florida) published the English translation that is most frequently sung today. The
version of the melody that is generally sung today differs slightly (particularly in the
final strain) from Gruber's original, which was a sprightly, dance-like tune in 6/8, as
opposed to the slow, meditative lullaby version generally sung today.
The carol was first performed in the Nikolaus-Kirche (Church of St. Nicholas) in
Oberndorf, Austria on December 24, 1818. Mohr had composed the words two years
earlier, in 1816, but on Christmas Eve brought them to Gruber and asked him to
compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for the church service.
In his written account regarding the composition of the carol, Gruber gives no
mention of the specific inspiration for creating the song. According to the song's
history provided by Austria's Silent Night Society, one supposition is that the church
organ was no longer working so that Mohr and Gruber therefore created a song for
accompaniment by guitar. One Silent Night historian says that the first mention of a
broken organ was in a book published in the U.S.
Some believe that Mohr simply wanted a new Christmas carol that he could play on
his guitar. The Silent Night Society says that there are "many romantic stories and
legends" that add their own anecdotal details to the known facts.
