A WORD ABOUT THE WORD
by Deacon Bob Fishman
Throughout all of human history there have been some great
achievements. In the sciences we have found cures for many diseases that once ravaged cities and towns. We have discovered
new galaxies and star systems. We are now able to communicate
around the world with lightning speed, and we have even landed a
man upon the moon. However the greatest moment in the history
of the world occurred in a tiny dugout cave on the outskirts of a
little town called Bethlehem. It was here that eternity decided to
step into time. The grand designer took on a design and the imageless God now had an image. It was here in this tiny space that
the one who created the universe and all that is within it decided to
become one of us. The one who had been predicted for thousands
of years had finally arrived. He, who would conquer death, now
was alive and dwelling with His people. Although he never wrote
anything to be published, more books and magazines and articles
would be written about Him than any other person in history. He
never travelled very far and His public ministry was only 3 ½
years, yet He would forever change the course of humanity. Our
calendars and time lines would forever mark His birth. The
Church that He would start would do more for the poor than all
other human institutions. The university systems and scientific
method all developed because of His Church. The arts and humanities would be funded and preserved for ages to come because
of Him. Millions upon millions would be forever transformed by
His teachings and sayings and countless holy men and women of
God would dedicate their very lives to serving Him. Magnificent
buildings and places of worship which show the ingenuity and artistic grandeur would be erected all for love of Him. More songs
and music have been written for Him and to Him than anyone
else. All of this took place in what we call the “Incarnation.” In
a little dug out, with a scrunched up face and two little eyes peeping out from some swaddling clothes, a baby was born, the Holy
Family was created and God dwelt among us. Now, for the first
time someone could look down and see Heaven looking up at
them. Nothing would ever be the same again. Something to think
about…and Merry Christmas to you all…

Our Cathedral Parish Family prayerfully celebrated with
the following on their Faith Journey with a deeper and
grace-filled life in Christ
Baptism
Brody John Theriault
son of Mark and Katy
Please join with your Parish in our celebration of the
100th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Cathedral as
“Spirit Filled-Faithful Souls.” A cornerstone of a yearlong celebration is our Stewardship Drive to retire the
remaining cost of our 2006/2012 renovation/restoration
project which concluded in 2012. It is our hope to burn
the mortgage at the conclusion of the two year redemption period for this drive.
We have a real treasure in the Cathedral building-a
spiritual and architectural “crown jewel” one that has,
does and will serve the needs of our Parish family. the
Diocese and the Helena community well into the future.
We came out of the project with $1.1 million debt
due in part to three major project additions that were
unplanned and unbudgeted, but could not be ignored.
They totaled over one million dollars. The current balance of the overage debt is $670,000. The Parish was
able to secure a commercial bank loan to cover the balance because of the stewardship of two Parish families.
Please pray about the indebtedness and consider a
pledge to help us retire it.
May God bless you in this Holy Season
and throughout the New Year!
of Greater Helena
Since opening in 2011, Cathedral of St. Helena and
St. Peter’s Cathedral volunteers have partnered
together to participate in 13 host weeks, supporting
19 families that found themselves in a homeless
situation.
As we bring 2014 to a close and look forward to
next year, Carolyn, Maggie, and Donna would
like to thank to all the volunteers throughout the
year that provided meals/desserts, breakfast items,
made reminder phone calls, moved the trailer,
setup the rooms for our guests, reset the rooms at
the end of the week, served as a dinner/Saturday
morning host or an overnight host for our Family
Promise host weeks. Your generosity is always
greatly appreciated by our guests!
Thank you to our parish communities for your
generosity, prayers, and support of Family Promise
this past year!
Friar Fred says its time to renew
that well-worn New Year’s
Resolution...
LORD, help me to remember
that nothing is going to
happen to me today
that You and I together
can’t handle!

MINISTRY TO GOD’S LOVE
God’s Love is an emergency shelter for homeless individuals located in downtown Helena. Three meals are
served every day, counseling is offered as well as showers and laundry facilities. Lunch and dinner are open to
anyone in the community in need of a meal. Numbers range from 30 to 80 people and up to 120. Currently the
shelter is providing housing for about 60 individuals which includes the men’s dorm, a few rooms for families
and some beds for women.
This past May, volunteers from the Cathedral Parish began providing and serving a meal for God’s Love
quarterly. These meals have been greatly appreciated by the residents and staff at this facility. The meal is
planned and provided by the volunteers, meeting in the Cathedral Brondel Center kitchen during the afternoon to prepare the meal. It has been great fun!
In September we began providing dessert and volunteers to serve the meal prepared by God’s Love for the
months we did not cook. We now have volunteers that either bring the entire meal or dessert and serve at
God’s Love once a month.
In celebration of St. Nicholas day (December 6), the volunteers prepared over 80 little bags of candy for the
residents. The bags included the story of St. Nicholas. Tradition would have the candy placed in shoes, however, the logistics were such that this wasn’t possible.
In 2015 we will prepare and serve six meals during the year. The other months we will provide dessert only.
Volunteers have the opportunity to contribute to the food, preparations and service in a manner that works best
for them. Some drop off ingredients, some cook, and some prepare at home (i.e., cookies). All participation
is welcome!
