Newsletter November 2014 Issue No. 015 It’s been a Rollercoaster As most Saints and Sinners are already aware there have been some developments and changes to our club this month. Although it has been a white-knuckle ride at times I am happy to report that plans are underway to keep our club together and moving forward towards a positive and bright future. These developments involve a change to the way our club is structured and organised and will include changes to those who are responsible for the various roles and responsibilities within the club. I was hoping to include a date and time for the upcoming AGM however this is not available at the time of publishing the newsletter. Watch your inboxes and our Facebook page as an announcement will be made very soon. Club Roles and Responsibilities Contact details for the various roles and responsibilities within Saints and Sinners will be announced following the AGM. In the meantime any queries can be directed to I encourage our club members to attend the AGM as some important decisions about our club and the way it is organised will be made. There is also an awards ceremony planned and a presentation to Brian Purnell who will be retiring from the position of Club Chairman, a role he has fulfilled for over 10 years, and it would be nice to see a lot of support there from our members to show our thanks and appreciation for his hard work over the years. Mark Clawson at: [email protected] Onto the newsletter, it is once again packed with information, awards and race reports. Thank you to everyone who has contributed a race report and photos for the newsletter this month, keep them coming in. Enjoy the November edition of our newsletter and until next month, Happy Running! Club Training News Leonnie In this issue: Club Roles and Responsibilities Club Communications WSFRL Update Upcoming Races Feedback from the Field Tilgate parkrun Summary Club Communications Runners’ Runner of the Year Award For the benefit of our new members, below is some further information. You are very welcome to join our team who are already signed up. Saints and Sinners are going to Hell... One of the many awards that will be made at our upcoming AGM is a Runners’ Runner of the Year Award. This award is for the Saints and Sinners member who you, the runners, have voted for. Why not join team Saints and Sinners who are taking on HELLRUNNER on the 17th January 2015? James has very kindly set up a voting page on the Saints website where you can vote for the member who you think deserves this award and your vote will not be visible to other members. The course is over a military vehicle training ground so we will be taking on the very best that nature has to offer... the Hills of Hell and the Bog of Doom. The distance is about 10 miles. I have provided a link to the voting page below. Due to time constraints voting will end at midnight on the 29th November, that’s this Saturday! On the day we will be teaming up with our friends the Horley Harriers and we will all be running in fancy dress, the theme has been voted as Danger Mouse. This is going to be one hell of a fun filled run! http://www.crawleysaintsandsinnersrun.co.uk/form/run ners-runner-year-2014-voting Hellrunner Update Voting for the fancy dress theme was an incredibly close run thing but winning by a whisker is... Danger Mouse! Our team will be wearing one of the Danger Mouse outfits as pictured below, apart from our very own David Penfold who will be running as... Penfold of course! The group will be split into two teams: the faster runners with those who want to get around as quickly as possible, and the fun group who will stay together at all times meaning we help each other, encourage each other, and generally have a good laugh all the way around. As the weather will be cold some of our quicker runners in the fun group may want to run off at times to warm up but they will stop at every key point and wait for the group to catch up before all heading off again. Full details about the race can be found at http://www.hellrunner.co.uk and you can also view the YouTube video Hellrunner Down South to see just what we are letting ourselves in for! You only ever go back to a race if you have enjoyed it. On the website there is a link titled Wall of Pain, from there navigate to the Wall of Pain x 5. Can you spot the Saint and Sinner?!!!! When you sign up select the 10:50am wave, this doesn’t really matter as the start times are not enforced, and enter Crawley Saints and Sinners as your team name. If you have any questions please contact Mark at [email protected] or speak to him at training. There is still time to sign up for Hellrunner which takes place on 17th January. It has once again been a very hard decision to select a most improved runner for this month. There have been some amazing efforts from everyone at training and in races which makes it impossible to single out just one person. In fact it was hard to narrow it down to two so for this month we have three most improved runners! It’s hard to imagine that both ladies have only recently graduated but after their parkrun graduation in October they have both caught the running bug. During November both of them completed parkrun on the 1 st, 8th and 15th with Debbie setting a new PB of 38:40 and Louise also setting a new PB of 32:29. A big well done to Stacey Buche who is always giving a superb effort in training. This month he organised two male teams and a female team to take part in the Reigate Relays and showed that Crawley can hold their own against some of the best clubs from Sussex, Surrey and London. Both of them completed the 2km Crawley Santa Run on the 22nd getting their first of many medals to come. Club Training News Stacey ran a leg in both male teams with an outstanding 16:16 for Team A and later 16:49 for Team B. Last week he set a new PB at the Brooks Brighton 10k in an amazing time of 37:25. There was only 1 point separating us from Hove Hornets and 5 points between us and Fittleworth Flyers, we came so close to jumping ahead into 7th place! That is a brilliant effort by all our runners and a fantastic improvement on 2013. Our juniors should be very proud as they finished in 7th position which is a tremendous achievement as we are not strong in the number of juniors within our club. A fantastic effort by our juniors this year, well done! Congratulations to this year’s winners for both seniors and juniors, Arunners. The relays are a cross country event for athletic and running clubs. The men's race consists of 4 legs and the ladies race consists of 3 legs. Each leg is approximately 2.5 miles long and with a 250ft climb to the top and a fast decent it isn’t for the faint hearted and requires plenty of strength mentally and physically especially when running against the best athletic clubs in Surrey and Sussex. Teams on the day included South London Harriers, Dorking & Mole Valley AC, Crawley AC, Cambridge Harriers, Dulwich Runners and Croydon Harriers. With a 1:30pm start time Glenn Mitchell, Stacey Buche and Anne Matthews drew the first leg to get the Saints off. Glenn Mitchell (B) was first to hand over to Steve Baker who was down on fitness due to a two week holiday in Jamaica but still managed a great run. Stacey Buche(A) a few seconds later came in to handover to Darren Selwood, a late replacement, who, with his lack of running still ran his leg in 20mins. Anne Matthews followed rapidly as 1st runner for the ladies team and handed over to Becca Arthur. Dave Penfold (B) ran a swift last 400m to change over to Stacey Buche, meanwhile Martyn Langton was shouted home by the noisy Saints and Sinners and Horley Harriers support at the final straight. Martyn (A) handed over to the final team (A) runner James Tombs who had been patiently waiting for nearly an hour and with 2 Crawley AC team runners within his sights he romped home in 17 minutes. This was a tough cross country course and we were mixing with some of the best runners in the county. All the Saints and Sinners ran with spirit, commitment and enjoyment. Photo: Horley Harriers Page 13 of 21 The Thames Meander Half Marathon, Kingston Saturday 1st November - Report by Nina Williams and Rob Kernaghan Rob and I did this race which started from Kingston and continued along the Thames towpath and it was a flat out and back course. The sun shone, the organisation was excellent and the Thames was in full splendour, with the route veering us towards Ham and Kew. Excellent water stations, as well as energy drinks there were trays of delicious flapjacks and brownies and jelly babies. If I hadn't munched so much en route I may have got a better time than 2 hours 8 minutes! This is Rob's account (er... not for the squeamish!!!) of the race and the photo is of us in the medical aid tent afterwards. Rob's story (2 days after the event) I was running well, approaching the turn on the out-andback course. I glanced over my shoulder, getting ready to turn and suddenly I was flying through the air. I hit the ground hard on my left side and immediately had the presence of mind to hit PAUSE on my watch. I lay on my side and a marshal and a St John's ambulance firstaider got to me pretty quickly and asked if I was ok. The St John's lady helped me off the course and I sat on a wall whilst she washed my leg down to clean up the injury. Having done this she put a dressing on my leg, butterflies on the knee and bandaged it. I asked her to keep it clear of my knee so I could try running. This took about 14 minutes to patch me up and I set off again, getting back to speed and ran well. I could see the bandage getting redder. I was overtaking people who had passed me whilst I was getting attention and felt fine for the rest of the run. I got to the finish line, stopped, chatted to a couple of friends and suddenly started feeling very sore, whereupon I saw the St John's at the end. They removed the dressing, cleaned the wound again and put an ice pack on it as it was starting to swell badly. I got home, went to A+E to get properly checked over and have a tetanus jab. Apart from a cracked a rib or two, cuts to both hands, left arm, and leg, toes on right foot split open - from where I had hit the brick, - bruised hip and thigh and my leg now in a dressing from knee to ankle, I was fine and in full working order!!!! Chip time 2:00:09, watch time 1:46:40. The immediate thing they checked was that I hadn't collapsed and they asked if I had running experience, how I felt etc. I explained I was a pretty experienced runner, wasn't dehydrated and had tripped. The offending item was a lump of brick sticking up out of the ground. At first I was a little concerned as I couldn't straighten my left leg, but was relieved that my right seemed ok (I fractured my right leg falling in a race in May). After the shock of the fall wore off, I sat up and realised my left leg was streaming with blood from a cut on my knee and had taken a lot of skin off the shin. However, the knee now seemed to move ok. Photo: Rosa McShane Page 14 of 21 The Poppy Half Marathon & 10k, Bexhill Saturday 8th November - Report by Leonnie Harrison The Poppy Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon, 5k and junior race was run predominantly along the seafront at Bexhill. Conditions on the day were dry and sunny with a very strong gusting wind. The organisers had cleared the lower promenade of sea debris the day before and again early that morning however their hard work was quickly undone by the waves breaking onto the prom and depositing large amounts of shingle and stones. the wind to contend with as the upper promenade was clear of debris. Once we joined the 7km loop it became trickier, we were battered by the strong winds and needed to keep a close eye on our footing as the shingle was quite deep in places and there were those larger stones and rocks to avoid. For the next 4km the race was mostly about watching my feet and I found it hard work. Before long we were heading away from the seafront up a short hill and onto the last 3km which were run on closed roads and the upper promenade which made for easier running - well apart from a few steps that had been thrown in for good measure! Tea, coffee, water and an assortment of biscuits were available in the marquee at the finish where it was nice to stand out of the wind for a while. Well done to all our Saints who ran. A special mention goes to James Tombs who ran parkrun earlier that morning but still bagged himself a new half marathon PB and to Paul Clark who smashed his half marathon PB by 10 minutes despite the difficult conditions. Photo: Ray Ko A small number of Saints met up for a pre-race photo before heading to the start line for the warm up which was followed by the British national anthem sung by Hannah Bradbeer from X-Factor, the Last Post and a 2 minute silence to observe remembrance day. Half Marathon (chip time): Paul Clark (01:34:20), James Tombs (01:35:47), Jason Harrold (01:40:18), RaJinder Sorroy (01:47:11), Chris Lee (01:55:47), Nick Baker (02:01:11), Cathy Holroyd (02:01:58), Ray Ko (02:06:04), Vanessa Harrold (02:20:02) Quarter Marathon (gun time, no chip timing available): Fiona Montgomery (01:04:11), Tom McLeish (01:10:38), Rod Harrison (01:15:11), Leonnie Harrison (01:15:11) The half marathon runners set off towards the lower promenade followed almost immediately by the 10k runners who headed in the opposite direction along the upper promenade. The course for the half marathon consisted of three 7km laps run along the seafront and closed roads. Sections of the course had considerable debris and sea foam washed up by the strong winds and waves, in places the shingle was deep with large sized stones. The waves were also breaking over the wall onto the path leaving some runners with soaked trainers. The 10k course consisted of two out and back loops along the upper promenade making a total of 3km after which we joined the half marathon route for a single 7km loop. The first 3km were relatively easy with only Photo: Leonnie Harrison Page 15 of 21 French Riviera Marathon, Nice-Cannes Brooks Brighton 10k, Brighton Sunday 9th November Sunday 17th November The French Riviera Marathon (Marathon Des AlpesMaritimes) is held on the south east coast of France between the cities of Nice and Cannes. Runners take in stunning coastal views as they make their way along the French Riviera from Nice to Cannes. Wasn’t this a popular race with the Saints and Sinners! The Brooks Brighton 10k is a fast and flat course and with calm weather conditions on the day it was perfect for many new PBs to be set. Here are the results (chip times) that I could track down: Photo: Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes Martyn Langton was there to take part and finished in a time of 04:12:17. Gosport Half Marathon, Portsmouth Saturday 15th November - Report by James Mason I entered the Gosport half marathon along with Rob Kernaghan due to its reputation as a quick PB course. Glenn Mitchell 36:19 (PB) Stacey Buche 37:25 (PB) Ben Stock 37:43 (PB) Paul Clarke 40:21 (PB) David Penfold 42:34 (PB) Sandy Kalsi 43:40 (PB) Anne Matthews 44:22 RaJ Sorroy 44:40 Mike Austin 44:51 (PB) Lisa Caig 47:03 Nick Baker 48:02 Bill Bedford 48:53 Shelley Meyern 50:22 (PB), Stuart Davies 51:55 (PB) Ray Ko 53:20 Gail Johnson 01:00:10 Julie Wyeth 01:00:10 Rob Copper 01:01:17 (PB) Charlene Joe 01:05:44 (PB) Julie Kalsi 01:07:23 After a quick drive down I had to pick up my number. At this point the rain was relentless but luckily it stopped just in time for the start. The race was large with 2000 entries. It was a very flat 2 lap course which I would recommend to anyone. I got off to a quick start and managed to maintain the pace, ending up with a new PB of 1:46! I know Rob enjoyed the race too and finished in 1:51. All in all a great race, well organised with lots of marshals and a great goody bag!! Chip times: James Mason 01:46:31 (3 minute PB) and Rob Kernaghan 01:51:27 Photo: Stacey Buche Page 16 of 21 Sheffield Castle parkrun, Sheffield Saturday 22nd November - Report by Glenn Mitchell Knowing that I’d be spending my first weekend in Sheffield since I left after finishing University in 2010, I thought that it would be pretty rude not to attend one of the many parkruns on offer in the area. After much deliberation I went for the Sheffield Castle parkrun, being as it is on one of the routes that I regularly ran during my recent part-time degree course. If you’ve never been to Sheffield it’s generally a hilly place. If you don’t have to travel up and/or down to get from A to B you’re doing well. It’s around 2 miles from the city centre to the start of this particular run, and that includes a nice steady climb of about 250ft over 1½ miles (you could take a slightly shorter route with a steeper climb if you’d prefer, but it’s much more fun to run back down that way!) Photo: Sheffield Castle parkrun The run consists of three laps around the Manor Fields Park, and just like everywhere else in Sheffield it’s got hills. Considering that the park is sandwiched in the middle of a well populated area it is surprisingly very scenic and quiet. Each lap starts with a small slope downhill before taking a few undulating twists and turns and then taking a short, sharp uphill to reach the far end of the park. It takes a 90 degree turn at the top before descending fast and finally finishing with a long, steady uphill back to the start of the lap, which ensured that I was definitely pushing hard to make it to the finish! Through a stroke of good fortune no-one really fast turned up on the day and I ended up crossing the line first with a time of 18:32. There were just over 30 participants so it had a real “local” feel to it, compared with the 400+ that had apparently turned up to the Sheffield Hallam parkrun on the other side of the city. St Catherine’s Hospice Santa Dash, K2 Crawley Saturday 22nd November Some of our Saints and Sinners, together with many other fun runners dressed in Santa suits, turned the K2 track in Crawley red for some festive fun and all for a good cause - to help St Catherine’s Hospice raise vital funds for the incredible work they do. Photo: St Catherine’s Hospice Well done to all our runners who took part in the 5-lap 2km fun run. Some eager runners enjoyed themselves so much they even added on a few extra laps for good measure! It was tricky spotting the Saints in a sea of red Santa suits so apologies if I have missed anyone. Here is a list of the runners I did manage to see: Simone Lee, Louise Clawson, Charlene Joe, Sophie Airey, Tony Airey, Bill Bedford, Sharon Arthur, Debbie Wiltshire, RaJ Sorroy and Malcolm Wiltshire. Page 17 of 21 St Barnabas Santa Dash, Littlehampton Clowne Half Marathon, Derbyshire Sunday 23rd November - Report by Leonnie Harrison Sunday 23rd November - Report by Derek Brailsford True to the weather forecast I woke on Sunday morning to the sound of steady rain pattering on our bedroom window. This Santa fun run was going to be a soggy and cold one but that wasn’t going to dampen our spirits! To celebrate my 70th birthday (27/10/2014) I ran the Clowne Half Marathon. The run began at Banjo Road where we ran along South Terrace and then turned right towards the seafront before making our way to Mewsbrook Park. We completed one lap of the park before heading back to the seafront for the final straight to the finish line. It was an enjoyable 3km run along a pleasant course. Despite the grim weather there were numerous supporters out on course including a group singing Christmas carols to the runners as we passed the cafe in the park. It was a tough course, with the second half being slightly harder than the first. We soon crossed the finish line where we were awarded a lovely finishers medal, including one for Molly our dog. Mince pies and hot drinks were available for all the finishers. Saints taking part were Rod Harrison, Jessica Harrison, Leonnie Harrison and Molly the dog. Due to injuries, this was my longest run for 20 months. Luckily the rain had stopped an hour before the race started, but the temperature was only 8°c. Things went very well for the first 10 miles and I was on for a 2h 5m finish. Unfortunately the slight groin strain I went into the race with let me down, and at just past the 10 mile marker my left groin muscle pulled. So it was a matter of limping the last 3 miles. Us old ones can be very determined and stubborn! I disappointedly finished in 02:18:25 (02:16:59 chip time). I do take 2 positives from the race: 1) I can run the distance and 2) I can finish in a faster time. So roll on next summer. Split times - 1 mile: time 9.5 (9.50 pace), 2 mile: time 19 (9.50 pace), 5 mile: time 47.5 (9.50 pace), 6 mile: time 56.5 (9.0 pace), 10 mile: time 94.5 (9.50 pace), 13.1 mile: time 138.25 (14.1 pace). The challenge is made up of three hills and is run over three legs with each leg starting and ending at Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking. Arriving for the start at 10am it was pouring down and it was that biting cold rain. Leg 1 was Box hill and yes you had to climb the dreaded steps. As expected it was very muddy and slippery and we had a slight diversion as the stepping stones were under water. I arrived back at Denbies with leg 1 and 4.5 miles complete. Finally leg 3 is up to Ranmore Common via the North Downs. It’s mostly tarmac with a bit of off road, the best way to describe this leg is you run uphill for 2 miles turn around and run back down. Leg 3 and another 4 miles complete. You cross the finish line to cheers and music and get a very nice medal and a well deserved bottle of beer. Photo: Mark Clawson The race can be run by teams of three who all run one leg each, or teams of two where one runner completes one leg and the other runner completes two legs. The relay teams change runner at Denbies where each leg finishes. Each runner gets a medal and the team get a bottle of wine to share. You can be really stupid and attempt all three legs totalling 15 miles as an individual, like I did. Photo: Fiona Montgomery Next up was leg 2 around Norbury Park. It’s a mix of trails and paved paths and lots of hills, the trails were so bad it was like some of the military races I have done and the cold biting rain was relentless. Although it seemed to go on forever eventually I was back at Denbies with leg 2 and another 6.5 miles down. The journey back to my van through the vineyards produced more whine than wine for me as the cold set in. By the time I got to the van I struggled to get the keys out of my shorts and had lost all feeling in my fingers, the only way to press the remote to unlock the door was to use my teeth. If the weather is better next year I would highly recommend it everyone. Page 19 of 21 Epsom 10m, Epsom Surrey Benidorm Half Marathon, Spain Sunday 23rd November Sunday 23rd November - Report by Nina Williams Stacey Buche ran the challenging Epsom 10 mile road race in cold and very wet conditions which resulted in some flooding to the course. Here is a description of the course from the event website: Steve Baker and I ran in Benidorm, enjoying warm, dry weather but without the conditions being too hot. Steve, who somehow managed to abstain from alcohol the night before, ran in a great time of 1:38:58, and I ran it in 2:02:15. A 10 mile road race starting and finishing by Epsom Downs racecourse. The course follows a loop on the roads around Epsom and Walton Downs. From the Racecourse it travels down Langley Vale and across Headley Heath returning through Walton on the Hill and Tadworth. It is undulating with most of the challenging hills, both ascents and descents, in the first 4 miles. After Headley Heath the course is fairly flat for another 3 miles before descending through Tadworth and the ‘switchback’ between miles 8 and 9 to Tattenham Corner with a gentle downhill in the last mile to the finish. Every finisher will get an Epsom 10 pen plus a medal to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of this event which was first run in 1963. Stacey’s finish time was 1:06:13 Photo: Stacey Buche The race is run over a flat course on closed public roads. It takes in the Old Town and the two main beach areas, where we ran along the palm-tree lined promenades. There are lovely views all along the course. Over two thousand runners from all over Spain and Europe competed and the streets resounded to the slap of trainers on tarmac and the very vocal encouragement of many spectators. Runners are drawn to the Benidorm race by the kudos of competing in the well-established half marathon, now in its 31st year, and the relatively new 10 km race. We celebrated our race with a lovely meal, outside in the sunshine, overlooking the Mediterranean sea - when Steve reacquainted himself with a beer or two! Tilgate offered us a Trick or Treat Halloween themed run with a reverse course on offer and lots of yummy cake for after. 36 Saints ran at the Halloween parkrun. However congratulations go to Stacey Buche on running his 50 th parkrun. 8th November - Everyone was encouraged to wear red and a minute silence was observed by all in honour of Remembrance Day. 38 Saints were there to run on the morning. New PBs were achieved by Martin Presland (22:38), Malcolm Wiltshire (29:14) and Louise Clawson (32:19). 15th November - An amazing 40 Saints turned up for parkrun at Tilgate this weekend with five of our runners setting themselves a new PB: Anthony Neal (23:47), Gary Fuller (24:04), Darren Bateman (24:44), Gabrielle Presland (26:49) and Debbie Wiltshire (38:40) A special mention goes to Sarah Berry, one of Bill’s Babes who was unable to attend the graduation parkrun in October. Sarah ran her first ever parkrun finishing in a time of 37:01. Sarah will be presented with her graduation certificate soon. nd 22 November - 25 Saints ran this week at Tilgate and Martin Presland set himself a new PB of 22:36, well done Martin.
