NOTEWORTHY
THE CHURCH IN ACTION
WELCOME!
red Craddock is a well-known pastor and professor of homiletics. I had the opportunity
to hear him speak once while I was a young preacher myself. He told the story of how
he and his wife were having dinner at a restaurant years before when an older gentleman asked Pastor Craddock what his profession was and sat down next to them.
Pastor Craddock, wanting to enjoy time with just his wife, told him he was a preacher, hoping
that would move the old man along. Instead, the older man’s eyes lit up and he said, “Let me
tell you a story about a preacher….”
As it happened, the old man was born the illegitimate child of a teenage girl. The boy this girl
had hooked up with was actually engaged to someone else, and didn’t want that spoiled, so
the man grew up not knowing who his father was. This became a source of great shame in
that small town in the late part of the 19th century.
But one day a new preacher came to the local church. As a boy, the old man had never gone
to church. But now, with a new pastor in town, he decided to go and hear what he might have
to say. Unfortunately his shame went with him. For some reason the people held the sin of his
mom and dad, whoever that was, against him. But something in the words of the preacher
kept him coming despite those negative feelings, looks, and words from others. He would slip
in late and leave early so as to avoid people talking to him.
No one in history has been more polarizing. More loved. More hated. But then again, He is
unequivocally the most famous person in all of history. Books have been written about Him;
Nathan Green paints amazing pictures of Him; we sing about Him from our hymnal - But
who is He? As we kick off 2015 with a week of Spiritual Emphasis, our pastors will examine
nine radical and explosive statements by Jesus that can lead individuals to find peace, moral freedom, and the soul cleansing we’ve all secretly searched for. Nine statements. Nine
stories so compellingly simple a child could understand, yet so deeply profound even philosophers have yet to fully comprehend. Come explore with us beginning January 1st,
where it’s All About Jesus.
Then one Sunday, the young man was so caught up in the sermon that he forgot to leave. As
he rushed to get past the people, he felt a heavy hand on his shoulder. It was the pastor.
“What’s your name son?” “Who is your father?”

out of the restaurant.

“Do you know who that was?” asked the server. “No,” said Pastor Craddock. “That was Ben
Hooper, former governor of Tennessee.”
Amazing what the words of someone who cares can do for someone else
who feels worthless. May the words we speak be a spark of hope for
those around, and may the words of God be life to our thirsty souls.
Welcome to Worship.

NOTE FROM FINANCE COMMITTEE:
We are considerably behind in giving to the Church Budget—the operating expenses of
our local church. We carefully put the budget together to cover not just the basic requirements of having a functioning church and youth center, but the many ministries
that are a vital part of our church and community life.
As of Nov 30th, we are behind by -$18,846. Please consider what you can contribute to
support the church at our local level.

This is the last Sabbath of the year! In order to receive tax deductions for 2014, all
