It is not easy to entrust oneself to God’s mercy,
because it is an abyss beyond our comprehension. But we must!

Reflecting on God’s Word
On Christmas we celebrate God becoming human, when the face of crea on was changed.
We ponder that great mystery of the Incarna on: Jesus is true God and truly human. The divine has entered into communion with the human in the body and soul of Jesus of Nazareth.
Christmas is not a single day, however, but an en re season. Today, the Sunday a er Christmas, we ponder the Holy Family. What difference does this mystery of the Incarna on make
for families? Jesus came to bring together the children of Israel into a new family, a family
united not by blood but by faith in him. So in today’s Gospel we see some of the first members of that family.
Luke’s Gospel has been called the Gospel of Jesus as the compassion of God, the Gospel of
prayer, the Gospel of the Holy Spirit; we can also think of it as the Gospel of family. He first
introduces us to Mary’s cousin, Elizabeth, and Elizabeth’s husband, Zechariah, parents of John
the Bap st. Then we meet Mary and Joseph.
Today we meet two other family members, Simeon and Anna, not related by blood, but only
by faith in the promises of the God of Israel. Each sees in the child Jesus the glory of Israel
and the light for the Gen les.
Christmas reminds us that by bap sm into Christ we are now part of God’s family. As God’s
family, “God’s chosen ones,” as Paul reminded the Colossians (3:62), we are to put on
hear elt compassion, kindness, gentleness, and pa ence, bearing with one another and forgiving one another.

YEAR OF SACRAMENTS
ONE WORD AT A TIME
Cry
Infants cry. We all know it. In their vulnerability, they let us
know that they need nourishment or need to be held. We
know that this is true of the newborn Jesus. The Eternal Word
made flesh shares the human vulnerability of every other infant on earth. And this infant vulnerability—their need and
their smallness— draws us close to them.
We may grow up, but we never leave behind our fundamental
vulnerability. In different ways, we con nue to cry for sustenance, for mercy, for
strength, for healing, and for connec on and communion. In our vulnerability, God
draws close to us, as Scripture says, with bands of love. When our deepest needs
and vulnerabili es prompt us to cry, the Lord draws us to himself through sacramental signs and rituals. He hears our every cry, and the sacraments of the Church tell us
that this is true.
POPE FRANCIS’ VISION OF HEALING AND COMMUNION
More on Pope Francis’ Vision at www.loyolapress.com/popefrancispopefrancis.com
We Are God’s Holy Family
The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren couples who were miraculously
granted the gi of children by God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading
from today, from which Luke took inspira on when he recounted the miraculous birth of John
the Bap st to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and
Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role models of those who trusted in God.
More than examples of those who trust, they are models of self-surrender. They abandoned
their own presupposi ons and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned their
lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn
death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a ny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world. This is what
we, as God's holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we
think things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of
endless promise. ©Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Treasures From Our Tradition
In the last century, a few new feasts were blended into the Church year, including today's.
A er World War I, the chaos of daily life in Europe made its impact felt on the family structure. Partly to offer Chris ans an image of hope and holiness in married family life, and also to
promote the welfare of children, today's feast was "invented" in 1921. In 1969, it became a
feast of Christmas.
The prayers today remind us not only of family life, but of life in the community of faith. We
ponder the mystery of a God who loves us dearly enough to embrace the struggles, joys, and
daily sorrows of family life. The message of Christmas shines through: God-with-us is available
to us in the ordinary pa erns of our lives and commitments. The lives of people who raise
their children in difficult circumstances, and of people who remain faithful to life in the
Church in spite of some of their own family struggles, occupy a special place in our hearts today in prayer. Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Respect Life…..
Herod.......issued an order to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and the surrounding area who
were two years old or less.
Reflec on. The Feast of the Holy Innocents leads Chris ans to reflect on the tragedy of aboron. Each day, our hearts should be broken as the bodies of these babies are broken, and the
souls of those who kill them are weighed down with the burden of guilt and despair.
Prayer. Lord, as the People of Life, enable us to bring into this world the hope that comes
from the birth of Christ and from the birth of every baby.
Is our parish ready for seekers this Christmas?
Imagine this. Someone who is lonely or anxious or victimized or broken has come to
the end of her rope. She is exhausted and disheartened. She has no idea what to do
next. Our friend—let’s call her Suzie—stays home as much as possible, wasting
time on the Internet. Then she comes across a news story about
Pope Francis. She doesn’t read the story, but she looks at the pictures. He seems so happy. He is hugging people. He is laughing.
Where can seekers find someone like the pope?
She knows it’s crazy, but she thinks if she could get a hug from
Pope Francis, she would feel a little better and have a little more
hope. She knows she will never meet the pope, but what if she could find people who
were like the pope? What if she went to a church? Would she find people like the
pope in a church?
If you know of any persons in the parish who have been away from the Church and
would like us to contact them about returning to the Church, please give us their information below and bring to the rectory or place in the collection basket.
