Temple is honored to display the Women’s Foundation for
a Greater Memphis 2014 Legends Award Art Exhibition.
Established in 2009, the awards pay tribute to innovative
women whose vision and influence have created a better
community through their passion for education, the arts,
philanthropy, advocacy, social justice, and civil rights.
Legends Award Artists and Writers created works of art and
prose that personify the honorees’ accomplishments and
contributions to this community.
Honored in the exhibit are Temple’s own Nancy Bogatin
and Mary Shainberg as well as Dr. Erma Clanton, Frances
Dancy Hooks, and Modeane Thompson. Temple member
Carol Buchman created the beautiful art honoring and

BETWEEN YOU AND ME
Have you ever thought about how crazy it is that we Jews celebrate the rebirth of trees in
late January – early February when the ground is frozen? Tu B’Shevat and all our holidays
are geographically based in Israel, and even in our spiritual homeland, as Temple Israel
members just witnessed themselves, the Golan Heights have snow capped mountains.
What, therefore, is the rationale for celebrating new growth in the icy winter?
The answer is that what you see isn’t the total picture, for while the trees may be bare
above ground, future life is happening beneath the soil, a harbinger of springtime and
better days ahead. Chanukah last month reminded us that even when it is darkest, it is still

possible to find – and even increase – the light. The spiritual message of Tu B’Shevat is that
the Jewish people never despair if the present is cold and challenging, because we know
that hope and a warmer future also are germinating and taking root – literally – leading to springtime, far
away as it may seem presently.
This is the perfect segue to the subject I will teach in Temple’s vibrant adult learning offerings. (See page 3
for details.) “A mystic,” according to Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, is “anyone who refuses to accept the
equation of reality only by what you see.” A mystic has the sense that behind the seeming contradictions and
brokenness we witness in the world and in our lives, there is a unity behind it all. Everything is connected, or
put another way, “It’s all One.” Kabbalah has become more than a crossword puzzle favorite or Madonna and
celebrities’ interest. The appeal of Kabbalah is the notion that there is more to reality than meets the eye.
Things are never as they appear, including the words of the Torah itself.
The same may be true of our synagogue. There is more to reality than meets the eye. We are the largest
congregation in the smallest Jewish community in North America. We are one of seven synagogues in
Memphis yet have only two rabbis to serve the majority of Jewish families in the Mid-South. Remarkably,
Rabbi Bauman and I have moved forward and deepened the spiritual, educational, and pastoral reach of
Temple in 2014, including new initiatives that will help ensure the future of our synagogue beyond preserving
the past. I am grateful to the stellar leadership of Jonathan Frisch and the Board for their full support in
bringing the best talent to Memphis for such a consequential congregation as ours for Jewish life in the MidSouth.
2015 promises to be yet another banner year for our remarkable congregation as we recruit a deeper bench
for our clergy team, solidify sustainable support for one of the leading synagogues in America, and ensure
the future strength of what Temple Israel symbolizes in the spirit of Tu B’Shevat – a jewel and tree of life for
Memphis and the entire Jewish world.

THE FLAVOR AND SPARK OF
JEWISH MYSTICISM

Temple Israel is a wonderful place with many outlets for people to express their faith
and interact meaningfully in their community. We have wonderful “mini communities”
within our larger Temple community, such as MRJ-Brotherhood and WRJ-Sisterhood,
ConnecTI, and Prime Timers. We provide amazing experiences for people to come
together at Tot Shabbat, Mitzvah Day, and our festival celebrations.
But where do teens fit? Many of these groups and programs are geared
towards families, young adults, or working professionals, and the teens are
none of these…yet.
Junior Congregation Memphis
(JCM) was created to capture the
teen audience. It is exactly what
its name suggests: a Junior Congregation for the teens to engage
with their faith and their community in ways they find meaningful,
inspiring, and fulfilling. Our goal is to provide diverse outlets for
teens, just like we do for our adults.
I have spoken with individuals from all walks of life and listened
to their experiences with Temple, their hopes for the teens, and
the challenges they foresee JCM taking on. I have had coffee with
parents, grandparents, and Board members, and I I have listened
to what they want for their children and grandchildren. I also have spoken (and eaten more ice cream than
should be allowed) with many teens. The teens have expressed that they want meaningful and educational
experiences. They want to have programs that are inter-generational; they want to help the less fortunate,
and, of course, they want to have fun.
Through these conversations, I have learned there
are three overlapping avenues that adults and
teens want: an excellent education, social action
opportunities, and leadership skill building.
And we already have been providing these
opportunties for teens! About a month ago, I took
twelve teens to Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church
in Midtown to feed the homeless. The experience
is called “More Than a Meal,” because instead of a
traditional soup kitchen line, the teens served the needy – like a restaurant. The idea behind this is to help
restore dignity for those who live on what others do not want. JCM’s High School on Sunday evenings has
been both fun and educational. During the week of Thanksgiving, the 11th and 12th graders studied a Midrash
that talks about how we cannot truly
be grateful until we acknowledge that
we typically take for granted what we
should be most grateful for (i.e. our
health, our family, etc.) Lastly, MeFTY’s
Kallah-Clave has allowed teens to plan,
organize, and implement a three-day
program for their peers who live all
over the South. JCM is slowly but surely
becoming what the teens and Temple
want and need. We are working hard
to prepare and share meaningful and
fulfilling experiences with our youth.
On a more personal note, I could not
ask for a better group of teens. They are bright, engaged, and eager to participate in their community. They
already have a deep-rooted love for Judaism and truly see Temple Israel as their home. I am excited to see
where the future takes us.

“We don’t need more textbooks. We need
more text people,” said Rabbi Abraham
Joshua Heschel. Throughout the Wendy
and Avron Fogelman Religious School, we
provide opportunities for our students to
learn from the examples of their teachers
and encounters with their peers. Mitzvah
projects, discussions, art, and games shape
our curriculum, and rely on personal interactions to bring
Jewish learning to life.
Our faculty serve as incredible “text people” for our students,
but they cannot do it alone. Each week, more than 40 teens choose to spend
their Sunday mornings working with our students as role models, music
teachers, tutors, and
classroom assistants. The
religious school could
not run without these
madrichim, who add
enthusiasm, meaning,
and fun to every learning
experience.
One group of madrichim
serve as teachers’
assistants in the
classrooms. They lead discussions and games, help with activities, and work
with small groups of students. While these teens help to facilitate learning
for all our students, they also learn quite a bit themselves!
The Teen Team is a group of madrichim dedicated to filling our religious
school with music. They teach songs and lead tefillah (worship) each week,
infusing the prayers with their incredible voices.
Our teen Hebrew tutors teach Torah to our b’nai
mitzvah students. Under the supervision of Rabbi
Bauman, these teens have become an integral part of
the b’nai mitzvah experience and serve as role models
for students preparing to become b’nai mitzvah.
We also have a brand new madrichim position this
year – photographer. This madrich captures all the
fun that our students are having throughout the
school. We share many of these incredible photos
in our religious school e-mails and on our Facebook
group.
While our teens have many

and encourage our students to
remain engaged in religious school
and the Temple community. These
madrichim are an inspiration to
our students and teachers, and
we are so lucky to have so many
young, engaged “text people”
within the religious school!

The Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center had a busy December!
We kicked off the month with our Sunday Fun-Day Open House on
December 7. Families were invited to come and visit their child’s
classroom for the 2015-2016 school year. While the children played and
engaged in hands-on learning activities, crafts, and snacks, the parents learned about the curriculum, special
programs, Judaic content, and the daily routines in each classroom.
Parents also were invited to our visitation
week, which was held December 8-12. This
was a great opportunity to see our NAEYC
program in action. If you missed these
open-house events, but would like to meet
our faculty and staff, visit the classrooms,
explore our school, and get an overview of our
research-based curriculum, please contact me
to make a reservation for a personalized tour.
On December 17, our Starboard, Pre-K, Jr-K, and Kindergarten
children performed in our annual Chanukah program. It was
created and directed by our wonderful Music and Movement
teacher, Kathlyn Prentice. The children sang songs, danced and
used props to create a magical Chanukah show. One highlight
of the performance was the children performing, “Let it Glow,” a Chanukah song written by our very own
Rabbi Katie Bauman. After the performance, families attended our TIPPS Chanukah Dinner where Corky’s
barbeque brisket buffet and latkes from Holy Cow were enjoyed. This was a great culminating event that led
into our Winter Break.
We are excited to resume school on January 5 and look
forward to sharing next month’s news with you. We
wish everyone a happy and healthy 2015!

TI FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS
The TI Fellowship program raises the bar on young adult
programming by bridging the needs of college students
(finding a job) with meaningful Jewish life.
In its first two years, the TI Fellowship has brought 26
outstanding individuals to Memphis for a comprehensive
professional, communal, social, and cultural experience.
Applications for the summer of 2015 are being accepted
through February 6 at tifellowship.org.
