Devon YFC
N E W S L E T T E R
From the Chairman...
Hi everyone,
Firstly I would like to thank you all for electing me as your new
County Chairman. It is the greatest of honours and I will do my
very best for the members and the federation. It was brilliant to
see so many members and supporters at the AGM at the Devon
Hotel, Exeter. Many congratulations to Chris and his team on
such a fantastic year. Hearing the steering group reports and
the slideshow from Chris, it reminds us of just how many young
farmer activities we fit into a year and what fun we have doing it!
Congratulations also to all the prize winners at the AGM. Hearing
about what they and fellow clubs have achieved is outstanding.
So now another YFC year begins, and I feel we have a fantastic
officer team at County once again. If you don’t know who they all
are, look on our NEW Devon YFC website to see their beautiful
faces (I’ll let you decide about that!).
If you are wondering who I am, here is a little bit of information
about me…
I joined Whimple & Broadclyst YFC nine years ago and I have
taken part in nearly everything that YFC has to offer. I have done
many club and group roles and more recently I was Competitions
Chairman for Devon. I work as an Office Administrator in the Farm
department of the Vale Veterinary Group, Cullompton. I live on my
family’s dairy and beef farm in Clyst Hydon in East Devon, where I
try and help out when I’m not busy
at work or YFC!
As I am writing this before
Christmas, I hope that you will all
have enjoyed the Christmas ball at
the Exeter Livestock Centre. A big
thank you to Kivells for their event
sponsorship and to Gavin for all his
hard work to organise our biggest
event of the year.
Talking of hard work, I know that
many of you are still busy raising
money for the new Devon YFC
headquarters. It was a privilege to
be invited to Okehampton YFC 70th
Anniversary celebrations, where
they presented a cheque for £3000
and I know that Chris was thrilled
to receive a cheque for £1000 from
Tarka group. Thank you all so much
for your continued support.
Now 2015 is upon us, may I wish you and your families a very
happy new year. I know this is a time for
making a new years resolution, so here is one I put to you all…
Try something new this year, whether it be speaking, acting,
stockjudging or a skill for life, I’m sure you will enjoy it.
I know many of you are busy rehearsing for your Pantomime
productions and I wish you all the very best of luck for your
performances.
I hope to see many of you during the coming year and if I can be
of any help to you and your club, please do not hesitate to ask.
See you soon,
Caroline Trude

Since the start of the new YFC year, which club event
have you been most proud of?
On the 15th of November we had our charity log chop. This
entails cutting down and chopping up trees in order to sell.
This may sound like a boring activity but it has become a big
hit with the members, with past and new members all being
able to get involved.
We spent two days chopping up two BIG trees and then
we got a load of people together on the third day to help
us deliver (the delivery is great fun for the new members!!).
We managed to sell and deliver 31 pick up loads on the day
making a grand total of £2015! The photo of the delivery day

Devon compete and help at the annual Fat Stock

entries, varying from wreath making to handicraft,
items of metalwork to mince pies. Hannah Pert
(North Molton) received the cup for most points
won by a girl, Richard Tucker (Chittlehampton)
the cup for the boys points and Lucy Hoskins
(Meshaw) won best pair of butchers lambs.
Members also took part in lamb and beef stock
judging, a tractor pull won by Chittlehampton,
and some members helped to clear the pannier
market to prepare for the Military wives concert.
Thank you to Caroline Trude for coming along to
judge, a cold but great day had by all!
Sid and Otter YFC
On Thursday 27th November Sid and Otter YFC
won The Broadlands cup. The cup is awarded to the
club with the highest percentage of new members
in the County. We last won the cup 10 years ago.
We already have 5 new members this year so we

What makes your club unique? Do you have any funny
traditions?
As a club we all like to have a laugh and to mess about at
any given time but when it comes down to competitions
we definitely get fairly in to it. As you can imagine with all
speaking competitions gone by and stock judging on hold
for a second, xmas quiz is next in fore front of the agenda,
so all members past and present, advisory, young and
“mature” are currently busy scanning through Heat magazine
and listening to radio 4 because we all want the extra bottle
to add to collection!
What is the most exciting/interesting club event you
have planned for the future?
We have our charity dung run coming up. This is when
we get together on a night time bag up as many bags as
possible normally around the 400 mark and then sell them

the Netball. This was a really well supported day so thanks to
everyone that came, shame that a couple teams had to drop
out. Also thanks to Clyst Vale Community College for having
us and to all the referees. Just a reminder to everyone taking
part in sports competitions that if you don’t have your current
membership card you won’t be able to take part, this is a rule
we really can’t bend so to save disappointment make sure

Jenny Ashton
Hello, hello Devon YFC you beautiful lot! Alice here, your new
Sport and Social Chair, ready to have a top year with all of
you! Throughout the year I welcome any feedback you have
on the sports competitions or events that we organise, please
let me know what works for you and what doesn’t so I can
make sure that what we’re putting on for members is the best
it can be!
Let’s get started with a few results; on 15th November we
held our County round of Commercial Dance at The Waie
Inn, thanks to all that came along and supported the night, it
was great to see so many clubs there watching that weren’t
entering a team. The mighty Tarka and ‘Carlton’ took home
the trophy with an 8 point lead. I hope they’ll have even more
support when they represent Devon at South West Area in
March! Well done to Exe Valley who came 2nd and Haldon
who were 3rd, I think everyone can agree it was a top night
of entertainment! Big thank you to Yvonne Broom and Fiona
Palmer who did a great job judging this tough competition.
On the 23rd November we had our County round of Rugby,
Tag Ruby and Netball, well done to all the members that were
there bright and early ready to get cracking! Winners of the
Rugby were East Devon, North Devon won Tag, and Haldon

‘Devon’s animal kingdom has known our expertise and care for over 30 years’
On Sunday 30th November we had a fantastic evening at
Crealy Adventure Park, selling a whopping 450 tickets! Out
of the 97 teams that took part in the challenge the winners
were Mumma Mia from Axminster made up of members, Dan
Strawbridge, Mark Warren, Peter Sweetapple and Stephen
Drayton, completing the course in an impressive 2 minutes
and 4 seconds! In 2nd place were the Heard Boys from
Okehampton and in 3rd were the Budgie Smugglers (haa!)
from Newton Abbot. Lookout for the full run down of results in
your clubs mailings.
My first dance is the New Year’s Dance at North Molton on
23rd January, with the theme ‘Charity Shop Challenge’. I can’t
wait to see everyone dressed up in their best/worse/clashing/
vile outfits they can find from a charity shop! I hope everyone
has a fantastic night at the most anticipated Christmas Ball
yet, and we’ll have a full run down of all the gossip next
month!
Love you, bye.

Secondly, well done to all those who applied for either a
junior or senior travel scholarship, the competition was really
tough this year, so if you haven’t been successful this time,
please do not give up, make sure you apply next year.
As previously announced, the Juniors will this year be taking
part on a sailing adventure aboard the beautiful wooden boat
‘Provident’ from the 3rd-9th August. The Seniors will be
travelling to Switzerland between 21st– 30th August for an
exchange scholarship with Landjugend – The Swiss Rural
Youth Association.
Look forward to seeing you all then.

Keeping the balance right
for your members!
Happy New Year to you all. This YFC year, from the 1st
September we have had a real boost in the number of
members. With some Clubs reporting more than 10 new
members already. The challenge is making sure your Club
programme can accommodate all members and keep them
interested, especially if you have a wide mix of ages. Things
that may help you are;
•Keep meetings focused and not too long.
•Put on something of interest after a business meeting such
as having a guest speaker, playing games, learning a skill
or getting creative and making something.
•When planning activities make sure the cost does not
exclude members. This can be difficult as some things
that members want to can be costly.
All prices exclude VAT
The first travel meeting will be taking place at 7.30pm on
Sunday 18th January at the YFC Centre, so this will give you
the opportunity to meet the other members in your travel
group. This is also a fantastic opportunity to start thinking
about fundraisers for the year ahead, so bring lots of ideas
with you!

•Have an idea session at a meeting were all members get to
write down their own ideas anonymously, then collate them
and come up with some new activities.
•Visits always go down well, from farms to food, fire stations
to famous buildings, just go out and explore somewhere
new.
•Put on a Skills session for the entire club such as selfdefence, cooking or first aid etc.
My last suggestion is: keep an eye on other clubs and what
they are doing, if they have had a successful event then why
not try some similar in your own Club!

that bovine TB (both the disease and the ever
increasing regulations) was doing to the cattle
industry in Devon. She did tell the packed room
at Exeter racecourse that she was ‘absolutely
committed’ to eradicating bovine TB and the
Government would ‘act decisively’ in order to
tackle animal disease. ‘We have proceeded to
cull despite loud objections and have taken the
necessary action,’ she said.
Defra Secretary of State
listens to Devon farmers
Like Devon YFC, Devon NFU has just had its Annual Meeting.
This year we were extremely lucky to have both the Defra
Secretary of State Elizabeth Truss and NFU President
Meurig Raymond, at the meeting to talk to and listen to NFU
members. This second part is vitally important, as it is only
through listening to those that are doing the doing (in this case
growing the crops and raising the animals) that policy makers
can get a real handle of the issues that count. One issue
that came through loud and clear was the ongoing damage
One issue that was raised with the Secretary of State during
questions were the concerns around the implementation of
the new Basic Payment Scheme and the difficulty of relying on
internet only applications when many areas of the county do
not have reliable broadband. This continues to be a concern
for many and the Secretary of State did discuss the work going
into ensuring the changes go smoothly and the help that was
available including a helpline and digital support centres.
On the 28th January there is a Farm Visit to Roger Pennington’s
new dairy parlour at Copplestone , starting at 5 pm for the keen
ones but will be going on well into the evening so join use when
you can, it really is a great opportunity to get to grips with his
bench marking figures, an opportunity not to be missed and
a lot to learn hence the early start, so let me know if you’re
interested.
We are hoping to arrange a trip aboard at some point so don’t
spend all your money over Christmas but have a good one!
Your AGRI Officer
Matthew Verney.
Luckily we had some spare time before the meeting, so we
introduced Caroline Trude to the Secretary of State and in what
must have been her first official outing as the new Devon YFC
Chairman. She didn’t waste the opportunity and discussed the
future of county farms and routes into the industry for the next
generation of farmers with the Secretary of State.
