Worship Services at 8:30AM & 11:00AM
Sunday School & Bible Classes (all ages) at 9:45AM
Our Mission: To share God’s love in Jesus Christ by word and deed.
We Warmly Welcome You to Our Worship Services:
We welcome all visitors and pray that our worship will provide an opportunity for you to experience God’s
love. We invite you to return and share in our mission and ministry for our Savior.
Attendance Registration Books:
Please fill out the attendance registration book found in the hymnal holders on the backs of the pews and
chairs. Print neatly using complete name and address. Pass it down your row; after everyone has filled it
out, return it to the center isle to be collected by the ushers.
Holy Communion:
We proclaim that the body and blood of Christ are present with the bread and wine in the Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins and recommitment of our lives. Those able to examine themselves,
accept Jesus as their Savior, confess their sins, and acknowledge his true presence in the Sacrament
are welcome to partake. Holy Communion is offered with both common and individual cups (8:30 AM).
If you desire the common cup, wait for the server to bring it. The common cup is filled with wine. The
individual cups also have wine, except for the inner ring of cups in the serving tray, which hold white
grape juice. Gluten-free wafers are available. If you have questions, please speak to the Pastor. If you
would like assistance to the altar during communion, speak to an usher.
Nursery and Infant Care Rooms:
Nursery care is available for children under four years of age from 8:15am – 12:15pm on first floor; take
south elevator from narthex to first floor. The Infant Care Room with a changing table and rocker is located in Classroom 13 on the sanctuary level (second floor). Additional changing tables are available on the
sanctuary level in the family and men’s restrooms, in the women’s restroom located across the hall from
the Nursery in the lower level, and women’s restroom on the same floor as the Activity Center.
Sunday School:
Visitors: If you are visiting today and your child would like to attend Sunday school, please bring the child
to Rooms 14 and 15, east of the sanctuary where they will be directed to the appropriate classroom.
Fellowship Between Services:
Please join us for refreshments and socializing in the Activity Center. Thank you!
Special Needs:

INTRODUCTION
In the psalm, all the natural world praises God, including all humanity, male and female, young
and old. The voices of Simeon and 84-year-old Anna join the chorus today, recognizing what God
is doing in Jesus. Simeon’s song is often sung after communion, for we have seen God’s
salvation in the assembled community and have held Jesus in our hands in the bread. Then, like
the prophet Anna, we speak of Jesus to all who look for the healing of the world.
The Holy Innocents, Martyrs
This day commemorates the young children killed by Herod in Bethlehem in his jealous attempt to
murder the baby Jesus, a sobering reminder of the evil that led Christ to be born for our salvation.

GATHERING HYMN
Hymn 389
“Let All Together Praise Our God,” stanzas 1-6
GATHERING
INVOCATION
P: In the name of the Father, and of the  Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
CONFESSION
P: God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to
live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your
forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
C: Amen.
P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Silence for reflection.
P: Most merciful God,
C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned
against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left
undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as
ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us,
and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your
holy name. Amen.
3
P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God
forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his
authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the
Father, and of the  Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
GREETING
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit
be with you all.
C: And also with you.
HYMN OF PRAISE
Hymn 389
“Let All Together Praise Our God,” stanza 7
PRAYER OF THE DAY
P: Let us pray. Almighty God, you wonderfully created the dignity of human nature and yet
more wonderfully restored it. In your mercy, let us share the divine life of the one who came to
share our humanity, Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord.
C: Amen.
P: We remember today, O God, the slaughter of the innocent children of Bethlehem by order of
King Herod. Receive into the arms of your mercy all innocent victims. By your great might
frustrate the designs of evil tyrants and establish your rule of justice, love, and peace, through
Jesus Christ, our savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever.
C: Amen.

NICENE CREED
C: We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
P: Rejoicing in the light of Christ that shines upon us, we pray for the church, the world, and all
according to their needs.
After each petition:
P: Lord, in your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.
The prayers conclude:
P: Hear the hopes and prayers of our hearts, O God, and magnify our joy at the birth of your
Light among us, Jesus Christ our Savior.
C: Amen.

poor to bring the riches of your grace. As you have blessed us with your gifts, let them be

C: We lift them to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

PROPER PREFACE
P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks
and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. In the wonder and
mystery of the Word made flesh you have opened the eyes of faith to a new and radiant vision of
your glory, that beholding the God made visible, we may be drawn to love the God whom we
cannot see and so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven,
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
P: Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life:
Blessed are you for the birth of creation.
Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light.
Blessed are you for your promise to your people.
Blessed are you in the prophets' hopes and dreams.
Blessed are you for Mary's openness to your will.
Blessed are you for your Son Jesus,
the Word made flesh.
In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
9
P: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:
C: Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
P: With this bread and cup
we remember your Word dwelling among us,
full of grace and truth.
We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection.
We look with hope for his coming.
C: Come, Lord Jesus.
P: Holy God, we long for your Spirit.
Come among us.
Bless this meal.
May your Word take flesh in us.
Awaken your people.
Fill us with your light.
Bring the gift of peace on earth.
C: Come, Holy Spirit.
P: All praise and glory are yours,
Holy One of Israel,
Word of God incarnate,
Power of the Most High,
one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
LORD’S PRAYER
C: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

P: Everyone who hungers, come to the table.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK
December 28—The Holy Innocents, Martyrs
The infant martyrs commemorated on this day were the children of
Bethlehem, two years old and younger, who were killed by Herod,
who worried that his reign was threatened by the birth of a new king.
Augustine called these innocents “buds, killed by the frost of
persecution the moment they showed themselves.” Those linked to
Jesus through their youth and innocence encounter the same
hostility Jesus encounters later in his ministry.
January 1—The Name of Jesus
The observance of the octave (eighth day) of Christmas has roots
in the sixth century. Until the recent past, Lutheran calendars called
this day “The Circumcision and Name of Jesus.” The emphasis on
circumcision is the older empha-sis. Every Jewish boy was
circumcised and formally named on the eighth day of life. Already in
his youth, Jesus bears the mark of a covenant that he makes new
through the shedding of his blood on the cross. That covenant, like
Jesus’ name, is a gift that marks the children of God. Baptized into
Christ, the church begins a new year in Jesus’ name.
January 2—Johann Konrad Wilhelm Loehe, renewer of the church,
died 1872
Loehe (approximate pronunciation: LAY-uh) was a pastor in
nineteenth-century Germany. From the small town of Neuen-dettelsau,
he sent pastors to North America, Australia, New Guinea, Brazil, and
the Ukraine. His work for a clear confessional basis within the Bavarian
church sometimes led to conflict with the ecclesiastical bureaucracy.
Loehe’s chief concern was that a congregation find its life in the holy
communion, and from that source evangelism and social ministries
would flow. Many Lutheran congregations in Michigan, Ohio, and Iowa
were either founded or influenced by missionaries sent by Loehe.

ILCUSC’s Health and Wellness Committee has printed a “Funeral Planning Worksheet” for your use.
You may find copies of this document on the table in the church’s entryway.

“Gospel Power for Personal Patience,” based on Luke 2:40-52. Or you can listen to “The Lutheran Hour” on streaming MP3 at http://www.lutheranhour.org/default.asp
STEWARDSHIP SENTENCE - Luke 2:39 “And when they had performed everything according
to the Law of the Lord. . .” The Law of God is good. Of course, it always shows us our sins: but
that is good, too! We need to be driven back to the forgiveness of Christ. But the Law also shows us
the truly blessed way to live. As Mary and Joseph found their joy in a godly life, so we should see
the Law as a guide for Christian living, as the roadmap for saying thank you to the Lord for all
God’s grace and mercy to us.
ARE YOU EXPERIENCING THE CHRISTMAS BLUES? The joy of Christmas
can turn into a time of painful loneliness and emptiness for those who have suffered
a loss or who are going through a difficult time. But help is available. Our Stephen
Ministers are ready to provide confidential, one-to-one, Christian care. They will
listen, care, encourage, pray with and for you, and support you through the holidays
and as long as your need persists. If you or someone you know is hurting, find out
more about Stephen Ministry by talking with Immanuel’s Stephen Leader, Pastor
Randy. Our Stephen Ministers are there to care!
