He has been a freelance illustrator for almost 4 decades, working with local ad agencies and designers, as well as national publishers. Around 2001 he began to take a watercolor class from noted exhibitor at the Watercolor Gallery in Laguna Beach, Barbara Stutheit. It was in her class that a fellow student gave Kevin a few sheets of Yupo plastic synthetic “paper”. He tried in on an illustration and liked it so well that he used it on a seascape in the class, and has been using it almost exclusively ever since for watercolor. “The Yupo and Plein Air Painting are a perfect match for my style of painting,” he notes. “The ability to completely lift the paint allows for great flexibility when on location, and when I get back to the studio, I can take my time for cleanup without fear of overworking. I love the freshness and intensity of color I get with it.” Past President of The Southern California Plein Air Painters Association, member of San Clemente and Orange Art Associations, Gallery representation: Mission Fine Art Gallery in San Juan Capistrano, Laguna North Gallery, Judy Schroeder’s Studio/Gallery in Old Town Orange, Crystal Cove “Store”, and Newport January DEMO - Jan. 9, 1:30 pmHarbor Nautical Museum Gallery. 3:30 pm At the Buena Vista Nature Center, 2202 S. Coast Hwy, Oceanside. This program is made possible in part by a Community Arts Grant from the City of Carlsbad's Cultural Arts Office. President's Column by Bob Mussay I sincerely hope that everyone had a healthy, happy holiday and is looking forward to a successful 2015. Our annual meeting and member's party was very well attended and all had a good time. For those who were not able to be there, the financial presentation by our Treasurer, Bruce Bartells highlighted some good news and some not good news. The good news was that Gallery sales were well ahead of last year, which might indicate that the economy is beginning to turn around. The not so good news was that our total revenue stream is not keeping pace with our total expenses. We did have a couple of major non-recurring Gallery expenses which drove up expenses, but the area we need to improve is our membership. We all need to be COAL ambassadors and actively recruit new members. We can solicit people coming through the Gallery, our neighbors and friends, fellow art school students and even artists from other associations. As we move forward in 2015 we will be looking to create more opportunities for sales. We have added "unframed oil". We will hold three show-in-show events this year in addition to our small image show in December. The planned categories are "water", "black and white" and "fall." We will be participating in in two Carlsbad Street Faires, one in May the other in November, as well as holding our own COAL Art Faires in June and August. We will continue to look for new opportunities for you and if any member has an idea please let us know. Bob Mussay HAVE YOU JOINED YOUR FELLOW ARTISTS YET? ALMOST EVERYONE HAS! Page 3 January's Featured Artist - Alan Katof I have been involved in Education and Art in New York for over forty years. Early in these pursuits I dabbled in crafts such as candle making and stained glass. I spent two years teaching these crafts and selling my own work. That endeavor became meshed with my teaching in the elementary school, and evolved into digital photography, and the more technical aspects of printing photographs using computers. As I evolved from film photography to digital photography, the computer classroom became my laboratory. Sharing my interests with the elementary school children that I taught, and with colleagues too, became the motivation to explore and develop my own skills. I used photography as a tool to motivate and to teach. At the same time, I became motivated by the children I taught, and by the beautiful photography produced by one of my very talented colleagues. Today, I try to capture a little bit of the beauty that surrounds us, and share that beauty via my photography. I love to photograph flowers and what better place to do that than in California. I love to travel our country and the world, and photograph almost all that I see. I like to smile when I look at my photographs, and I hope that you do too. LOOKING FOR AN ART TEACHER?
