ANSWER: Discover Zone after school program at
Lewis & Clark Middle School can help answer both
questions. Discover Zone offers after school clubs
& activities to students at Lewis & Clark Middle
School. ANY student enrolled at Lewis & Clark
Middle School is eligible to participate and all activities are offered FREE OF CHARGE!
Discover Zone currently provides after school activities in multiple 5-week sessions throughout the
school year. Activities take place after school
Mondays through Thursdays, until 5:00 p.m. All
activities take place at Lewis & Clark Middle School
and are led by area youth serving organizations
(Girl Scouts, 4H, Friendship House, MSU-B, & others) and community volunteers who have been
interviewed and screened prior to acceptance with
Discover Zone. Session One starts Oct. 6 through
Dec. 18. Parents are encouraged to volunteer as
well. Registration forms and activity calendars can
be picked up at Discover Zone, Lewis & Clark Middle School, room 103.

LEWIS & CLARK SCHOOL SAFETY
I want to assure the parents of Lewis & Clark Middle
School that the staff is doing everything possible to
keep your children safe. The following procedures
have been implemented over the last school year:
1.
All doors except the front doors will be
kept locked during the school day.
2.
All visitors will sign in at the office and
receive a visitor’s badge. This includes
visits to the cafeteria during lunch hours.
All parents or visitors in the building must
have a badge or school personnel will
send the visitor back to the office.
3.
Throughout this school year, Lewis &
Clark will be practicing the following:
several fire drills, an evacuation to our
alternative location, (Elks Lodge, 934
Lewis Ave., 406-252-8407), a lockdown,
and a shelter in place (snowstorms,
chemical spills).
Some of our drills will take place during
the lunch hour and during passing times.
4.
The staff will be talking to students about
emergency situations, safe locations, and
how to find a staff member for help
if they are transitioning between
classes.
5.
The Lewis & Clark staff takes great pride
in teaching our students to cooperate with
school personnel during an emergency.
We understand that these new safety rules can be
stressful and time consuming, however, the safety of
our students and staff is our utmost concern. Thank

Police to begin enforcing
the “No Parking” signs
around school
Prompted by complaints from drivers on
14th St W, between Grand &
Lewis, the Billings Police
Department will be enforcing
the “No Parking” zones
around Lewis & Clark Middle School.
According to SRO Zorzakis, “a danger
zone exists on the west side of Lewis &
Clark”. Parents are illegally stopping
southbound on 14th St W to pick up their
kids, creating a danger zone for both cars
and students. The southbound traffic lane
is not wide enough to safely accommodate both stopping and the flow of normal traffic. The danger is increased in
this zone, when students cross in the
middle of the street, in between vehicles,
to reach parents illegally
stopped across the street. SRO
Zorzakis suggests parents pull
into the parking lot behind the
school to safely pick up their kids. A
little cooperation goes a long way in
keeping our children safe.
Welcome to Lewis and Clark Middle School from Mrs. Bayne, Mrs. Beaumont and Mr. Brook with a
special greeting to parents of our 6th graders. Middle School is a new system with roles, personnel and
procedures different from the elementary buildings. Please know that you can call the Counseling Center
with your inquiries of how-do-things-work-at-this-school. We are happy to help you!
The first quarter kept us very busy with scheduling new students, changing schedules, arranging
Individualized Education Program meetings and Parent/Team meetings and coordinating, proctoring and
trouble-shooting the Fall NWEA-MAP Testing, in the midst of all our other duties. Learning the names
of our students is a huge job in the beginning of every year and always a challenge as we try to put names
and faces together. We hope we are able to meet most of our parents as the year progresses.

History Alive
Lewis and Clark’s history department had some
fun with the causes of the American Revolution.
Mr. Visser, Mr. Jensen, Mr. Polkow, and Mr. Jarvis
presided over a town hall meeting in which students, posed as Patriots (for Independence), Loyalists (against Independence), or Neutralists. They
debated the course of American history. Students
prepared for the meeting for a few days and then
had a great historical simulation in which many of
them dressed in period costume. Each period, the
Neutralists voted on which side presented the most
compelling case. Passionate arguments were
made, fun was had by all, and more importantly –
the students understood why we broke free from
Great Britain. Ask your student if they voted for
independence the period he/she participated in!

Coffee Sales will kick off Friday November 14th. Sales will continue
through November 24th.
Tech. Ed. club will begin meeting on
Wednesday mornings starting on the 4th
of December. Involved students will be
preparing for the state TSA (Technology
Student Association) competition. Activities include various technology related
contests that require the
contestants to use problem solving techniques to
come up with the solutions. If you have any

The Title VII-Indian Education Program at
Lewis and Clark is staffed with one home to
school coordinator, Kati Fink. She works primarily with our Native students and families.

Kati is here Monday, Thursday, and
Friday. Native club will be every
other Thursday for about an hour
after school starting on 10/23/2014.
Tutoring will be available every Monday after
school. Club and homework assistance will
meet for the first time in Kati’s office, and
other meeting places will be determined.
“STUDENT COUNCIL IS
PUTTING YOU FIRST”
Lewis and Clark Student Council under the
sponsorship of Mr. Visser has been very busy
this fall! The twenty two person council has
already raised over $600 at Saturday Live
with our Billings Best Yogurt booth and our
hat day in early October. Student council
helped put on special ice cream socials for all
students as well as guided tours for open
house. We have many exciting projects lined
up for this year. All student council members
will participate in a community service project
this year that will partner with
Mr. Jarvis' "Two Roads Project". We are also helping
Ms. Wardrip with a school art
project. Kudos to all of our
members for an outstanding
start!

Native Club will be a fun way to get to know
each other, play games, have
snacks, and plan fun adventures.
The club will be holding fundraisers
in order to pay for the adventures
and t-shirts. Money earned this year
will be spent this year. All students

Special Olympics 2014-2015
Special Olympics at Lewis and Clark is back!!!! The
2014 fall sports start with basketball and equestrian. Athletes participating in Basketball from Lewis and
Clark are Ashley Luskleet and John Bedwell. Their
team, The Firecrackers consists of 10 players from
various middle schools and high schools acrossBillings.
This year we will host the 3rd annual Yellowstone Valley
Regional Basketball Tournament on October 25th. The
Firecrackers along with other teams from the area will
gather together for a fun filled day of Basketball. The
games will be played at Lewis and Clark MS and Will
James MS.
The teams will then travel to Helena in November to
attend the State Special Olympics Basketball Tournament.
We also have a skills component to our Basketball
season. From Lewis and Clark, Alana Crook will compete at the area competition on November 10th here at
Lewis and Clark MS. For more information regarding
Special Olympics contact Tammy Grimm @ Lewis and
Clark MS.
Participating in Equestrian this fall from Lewis and Clark
are Rebecca and Sarah Eck. The are riding out the
Equine Motel in Lockwood.
CARE Club is off to a great start this
year! We are already busy with many
projects and we have plans for lots of
fun activities throughout the year. Congratulations to this years officers: Clara
Bentler ( president), Emma Black ( vice
president), Rachel Eaton and Natalie
Romei ( co secretaries), and Ashlyn
Morales and Grace Steepe ( announcements). Our sixth through eighth graders are currently planning and preparing
to support activities in observation of
Red Ribbon Week . Students will be
dressing in a different theme each day of
the week October 27th through October
31st in order to draw attention to their
pledge to stay drug and alcohol free!
We will keep you posted on future activities that support our school and community!
Seventh grade science students have been working on
learning about the tool of science and how scientists
experiment. After a lot of practice, students were
introduced to termites. They found out termites have
no eyes, but are able to sense their surroundings using
their sense of smell. They found that
worker termites will follow certain
types of ink! After observing termites
and ink-drawn circles, the students
devised their own experiment to see
what else they could learn about termites.
They learned a lot about
termites, how to design and experiment, how to write and share what they learned, and

The Rattler Team has had a great
first quarter, learning all sorts of fun
and exciting things. In science, we
learned about scientific method
(love those termites) and also studying ecology. In math, we have reviewed operations with rational numbers and are moving on to
expressions and equations. In English, we just
finished The Wednesday Wars, a coming of age
story. The students really enjoyed this novel and
some even said it was “the best book they have
ever read”. In geography, we are studying North
America and Mr. Swanson’s class even got to
write their own constitutions. In health we are
studying the bones and muscles. In p.e. we are
starting our basketball unit.
7th grade girls will be starting their games shortly
and the wrestlers are off to a great season. Boys

The Wolves’ year is a “howling” success thus far. These “pups” are some of the nicest ones
we’ve had a pleasure to teach! Speaking of teaching, this quarter has already been a whirlwind
of learning. In Math, students have finished reviewing past knowledge, and they are about to
start two-step equations and graphing linear-equations. Whoa! That’s some serious learning,
but that’s just the beginning. Moving into P.E. and Health, students are going to wrap their
brains around tobacco and drugs, while wrapping up their fitness unit. Their fitness has “paid”
off during the Walk-A-Thon: they raised $487 for weight room equipment. Students are also
getting “pumped” for History; they are starting a “Revolution.” And their “Why’s History Important?” essays were revolutionary in themselves, though some needed a new “plan of attack.”
Perhaps the revision process will aid them in English as they are moving into their Anne Frank
theme analysis essays. Afterward, students will be “Poe”king around the mind of Edgar Allan
Poe, exploring the genre of mystery and suspense, which should be old-news after their murder
-mystery activity in Science using the Scientific Process, a process they will need to use when
doing their inventions: a major project that is due on December 15 with checkpoints along the way. What is your child’s industrious idea? Well, after this
plethora of learning, students better have some foresight when it comes to their
high school journey as they will be registering for their ninth grade classes in
December. Dialogue with your child about his or her goals to make this process
more meaningful. Let’s make it a memorable and successful year! Go Wolves!
History: We just had our town hall
meeting on the eve of the Revolution with the Loyalists, Patriots
and Neutralists. Next up is the
Revolutionary War and the crazy
document known as the Declaration of Independence. Pretty soon we’ll be dissecting the Constitution and our Bill of Rights.
This is all good stuff!
6TH GRADE NEWS!
It is hard to believe that one quarter of the
school year is already over. We have been
working hard in all of our subjects. In math
we have been learning about factors (prim
factorization with exponents) and multiples.
We will be moving on to fractions. In reading, we are working on our Holocaust unit
with a novel, "Number the Stars". Early civilization is the topic being discussed in social
studies. Be sure to ask what interesting things
are being discussed in science (Forces and
Motion/Nature of Matter).
REMINDER!!!!
With winter coming, just a reminder that unless a student is with a
teacher or in an activity they must
vacate the building by 3:30!
Science: We just finished metric measurement
and will be diving into the periodic table next.
Students were to have their science project idea
approved and turned in by Oct. 1. Final project is
due Dec. 15, which is right around the corner.
Math: We will be starting linear equations both
solving and graphing. Students are encouraged
to stay caught up on daily work.
Health/PE: We are starting the alcohol, tobacco,
and drug until, which discusses the harmful
effects of all those listed. We also introduce
abstinence during this unit. We are also continuing to work on our cardiovascular until, which
includes the Pacer, the mile, and the 12-minute
run. Ahhh...what the students love most!
English: We just finished Summer of My German
Soldier, a novel set in the USA during WWII. The
students wrote essays demonstrating their ability
to integrate quotes in their writing to prove a
point. We will be focusing on the elements of
literature in the weeks to come!
The Griz teachers hope all is well and we are off
to a great start for this school year!
The Bobcat team is enjoying a new year of learning and fun! We are so excited to have such
amazing and talented seventh graders on our
team, and we are looking forward to a great year.
Mrs. Greene’s science class spent the first part of
the year making sure everyone knew how to stay
safe in science class, use science tools, and how
scientists experiment. Since then, they have
moved on to their Environmental Science
unit. One of the first activities was, "Oh,
Deer!". Students became "deer" that had to find
resources in their environment while avoiding
wolves, disease, fire, drought, and hunters! They
will be applying what they learned during this
activity to help them understand many of the concepts in the unit. In English students have just
finished the novel The Breadwinner based on a
true story of a young girl living in war torn Afghanistan. Next, we will be looking at some biographical stories of children living in Kabul Afghanistan.
Next we will move on to some works by Edgar
Allan Poe! In Mrs. Allie’s Geography classes
students have just finished studying the United
States and now they will migrate up to Canada. Mrs.
Fitgerald’s math classes have
been busy making interactive
notebooks and working at
solving equations. Mr. Luft’s
Health Enhancement classes
have just finished up with their fitness testing and
they are beginning the study of the body systems
in Health class. It has been a busy and exciting
start to the school year and we look forward to
visiting with parents during parent teacher conferences in November!
