Management Classics of
the Carnegie Tradition

Purpose of the Workshop
Today, a variety of empirical and conceptual papers in management and organization research still
build more or less explicitly on established ‘management classics’ in the Carnegie tradition
(Simon, 1947; March & Simon, 1958; Cyert & March, 1963). The purpose of this workshop is
twofold. First, to unite PhD students and early career academics with more senior scholars that
integrate these management classics into their research. Second, to foster joint reading,
understanding, and integration of the foundational works in the Carnegie School tradition. Workshop
participants will engage in discussions to establish connections between ‘management classics’ and
state-of-the-art publications and to set the stage for innovative, novel research questions. The
workshop will finish with a video conference with Prof. Jim March.
Invited and Affiliated Speakers
To reflect on how selected management classics have inspired own research programs, established researchers of the
organizing universities as well as selected guest speakers will collectively contribute to panel discussions and present
on nominated topics.
Philip Bromiley is the Dean’s Professor in Strategic Management at the Paul Merage School of
Business at the University of California at Irvine. He received his PhD from Carnegie-Mellon University in
1981 where he worked under Herbert Simon. His research takes a behavioral approach to a variety of
strategic management topics, such as risk assessment, firm temporal orientations, R&D policy, trust in
organizations, and strategic decision processes. He is the author of over 80 journal articles and book
chapters as well as two books. He serves as an Associate Editor of Strategic Management Journal and
on the boards of Journal of Management Studies and Journal of Management & Strategy. He previously
served as an associate editor of Management Science and on the editorial boards of Strategic
Organization, Organization Science, Journal of Management, and Academy of Management Journal.
Claus Rerup is an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior at Ivey Business School at
Western University. He received his PhD from the Aarhus School of Business, Denmark in 2001.
His areas of expertise include organizational learning and routines, organizational attention and
sense-making in the context of organizational crisis and accidents. His work has been published
among others in the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, Organization
Science and Journal of Management Studies. Furthermore, he serves as an editorial board member
of the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Organization, and Organization Science.
The affiliated speakers include three established researchers from the
organizing and affiliated universities. Alfred Kieser is Professor Emeritus
of Organizational Behavior at Mannheim University in Germany, and a
professor for Management Theory and Vice President Research at
Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Tomi Laamanen is a
Chaired Professor of Strategic Management and Director at the Institute of
Management of the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. David Seidl is
Chaired Professor of Organization and Management at the Institute of
Business Administration at the University of Zurich.

Participation & Funding
To ensure the best experience, the number of participants is restricted to 16. The workshop is partly funded by the
Zeppelin University and the Society for the Advancement of Management Studies (SAMS). Workshop participants are only
required to pay for their own accommodation and travel.
PhD and early career scholars interested in participating are invited to submit an application by February 15th 2015.
