Office Hours:
Clubhouse office hours 9 am to 5 pm, Monday - Friday,
8 am-3 pm Saturday and Sunday except holidays.
Reception desk open 7 days a week.
Barcodes are required on all resident cars. When
transferring or selling a car, you must remove the
barcode, and bring it to the office. The Association
charges a barcode reissuing fee of $20 if it is not
presented when a replacement is requested. Vehicle
registrations and driver licenses must be presented
and copied before any barcodes are issued.
Maintenance and Late Fee Policy
Maintenance fees are due the first of each month. $5
late fee shall be imposed if received 10 days after
the due date and an additional $25 late fee shall
be imposed 30 days after the due date. All unpaid
maintenance fees are subject to the above late fees
as they continue to remain in default.
Trash, Recycling and Garden Debris
Trash is picked up each Tuesday and Friday. Refer
to the monthly calendar for recycling days, which
are on alternate Tuesdays.
NO LARGE TREE LIMBS, TREES, SHRUBS,
OR BAGGED LEAVES WILL BE PICKED UP.
THESE ITEMS ARE ACCEPTED AT THE RECYCLING CENTER ON NEW HAMPSHIRE
AVENUE.
Reserved parking stalls in the RV lot are paid areas.
Temporary guest parking passes are available at the
front desk and guests may park with pass displayed
in window in the maintenance parking lot in the
non-reserved parking stalls only.

1. Traffic Problems – residents speeding on Hampshire Hills Blvd. and Kensington Circle and rolling through
stop signs throughout the community. We have been
fortunate that accidents have been rare (although they occasionally do occur). We must all be conscious of the speed
and stop signs. Carelessness most certainly can and will
result in a serious accident. Everyone should be cognizant
of the traffic patterns while driving through the community.
Violations will eventually injure someone. Remember, the
speed limit is 25 mph throughout the community.
2. Dog Walking –all dogs are required to be leashed
and walked at curbside! It has been observed that many
dog owners walk their animals on sidewalks with the result
that the dogs do their business on residents’ lawns. Many
owners are responsible and carry bags in which to place the
waste, but urinating can ruin lawns as well. Please keep this
in mind and be considerate of your neighbors. As you walk
on the sidewalk please confine your dogs to the curbside.
It has also been noted that some residents just open their
doors and let their pets run unleashed. This practice causes
problems for your neighbors and requires them to clean up
after your pet. The landscapers have a problem with this
as well when they mow the lawns. If you walk your dog
on the walking path please pick up after your pet as well
and dispose of the waste properly. We will be installing 4
new waste receptacles with dog waste dispenser bags along
the path for your convenience. Consideration of all animal
owners will insure a healthier and happier community. No
one wants to report infractions. It only results in friction.
3. Grass Cutting – all of us have wet areas between
our homes. This is caused by high clay content in the soil
which does not allow water to drain properly into the sand.
Many sprinkler systems are on automatic cycles which results in overwatering, which only exacerbates the problem.
As a result, the grass cutters damage the lawns and cause
deep grooves in the ground from their mowers. You may
want to inquire with your irrigation specialist about rain
sensors. Installation of these sensors will automatically
shut down your system when it detects adequate water. Our
contract with LMS specifies that Stander mowers will be
used in the wet swale areas. The contractor no longer uses
the conventional walk-behind mowers. The technology
of the Stander mower provides better maneuverability in
the wet, uneven terrain encountered in the swales. Driven
from a standing position, the workers can shift their weight
instantly to handle changing terrain. This is not possible
with a push mower. However, residents have complained
that damage is still occurring to their lawns. We will invite
the lawn maintenance company to visit a Listening Post
Meeting in the Spring to hear your concerns firsthand. If
your sprinkler system is on automatic, please change it to
manual when heavy rain is predicted. If you do not wish
your lawn to be cut because of excessive water, please

Management of Association Funds
In November all residents received the 2015 Association Budget letter which detailed the necessary budget
increases. The December 9 Budget Meeting was publicized
in this letter in which residents were encouraged to come
out to listen to the budget presentation and ask questions.
Establishing the budget is a long and arduous process and
demands tremendous accountability on the part of the
Board.
One of the most important responsibilities of the Board
is to manage the association’s funds. The Board takes this
responsibility seriously. It does not do this alone and relies
on the professional support provided by the accounting
department of FirstService Residential, advice from our
accountant at Wilkin & Guttenplan, proper bonding through
insurance professionals and analysis from reserve specialists at Kipcon Engineering.
The procedures in place to safe guard Association
funds are as follows:
• Association financial records are audited annually by a
certified public accountant. The association accountant
is a valuable partner who works closely with management and the board to ensure your assessments are
managed and invested wisely and legally.
• Bank statements are reconciled promptly each month.
• The balance sheet and profit and loss statement are reviewed each month, and expenses are compared to the
budget each month by the CAB. The members of the
Finance committee also participate in this review of
financial documents at each of their monthly meetings.
• Association reserve accounts are analyzed annually to
ensure they are adequate for future needs. Every three
to five years the Board updates the Reserve Study
with the help of a reserve specialist to ensure they
are funding properly in order to make the necessary
replacements over time.
• The association has a fiscal management policy outlined
in the By Laws that safeguards the principle of invested
funds, a signature policy that safeguards operating
funds, and a collections policy that safeguards cash
flow.
• All association volunteers and personnel who have access to association funds are bonded. The By Laws
ensure that the Association maintains adequate fidelity
coverage against dishonest acts by any of its officers,
directors or employees. Our insurance professionals
make certain that the fidelity bonds comply with the
requirements of the governing documents.
• Checks and balances are in place to ensure the safety of
association funds, such as requiring two signatures on
all checks.
Controlled management of funds is key in order for an
Association to reach its goal of maintaining all the elements
of the property. Increases in your monthly maintenance are
almost always inevitable in order to meet the needs of an
aging community. The Board along with the guidance and
recommendations made by these professionals not only
safeguards the communities’ assets but also keeps the community looking its best at all times, ultimately protecting
your property values.

One could say we went “out of the box” with this cover.
However, with the state of the country and the world today,
we felt a little reminder of what is important, in lieu of the
usual fanfare, was needed. This song was written by the married, songwriting team
of Sy Miller and Jill Jackson in 1955. It was their dream
of peace for the world and how they believed each one of
us could help create it.
It was awarded the George Washington Honor Medal
by the Freedoms Foundation and received a Brotherhood
Award from the National Conference of Christians and
Jews.

January has moved in on the whispers of those sleigh
bells ringing and jing-jing jingling! Hello to the New Year
and new beginnings.
Bravo to PEP for a fantastic job with both the Holiday Dance on December 6 and the New Year’s Dance that
celebrated the year past, 2014, and the new year of 2015!
Our Holiday Committee, chaired by MaryAnn Christian, did a wondrous job decorating the Clubhouse for the
Christmas and Hanukkah season. SACC purchased new
and beautiful garlands that graced the Clubhouse, both the
Main Room and the Multi-Purpose Room.
A few words to our helpers:
“ The holiday decorations were handled with care,
by the many volunteers who worked and were there.
Volunteers, there were plenty, were smiling and joking.
The day was filled with good cheer!”
Thank you to SACC for the beautiful gift and thank
you to all the men and women who volunteered their time
and energy.
Claire Farrell and her tap dancing group have been
practicing their craft and are now reaching out to community assisted living facilities in our area. Learning to
tap is the on-going format for Claire, Fridays at 10:30 am
in the Multi-Purpose Room. If you want to learn to tap, it
is free, and the group is happy to welcome new members .
Theresa Ruggiero and her gals crochet on Tuesdays
from 1 pm to 3 pm. The group donates lap-robes to the
VFW. They also crochet bandages for a Leprosy group in
Vietnam. If you enjoy crocheting or would like to learn,
please check them out.
Sadly, we will be losing two of our senior residents
soon. Paul and Marion Schneider will be retiring to Florida,
after living and volunteering here in Greenbriar Woodlands
for 26 years. Marion has led many residents to fitness and
good health through her instructions at “Stretch and Tone.”
Marion began this group with 12 residents 25 years ago
meeting in the Ladies Card Room. This exercise group is
free and is held Mondays, and Fridays in the Multi-Purpose
Room from 9 am to 10 am.
Marion says that the exercising is “not taxing” and
“sneakers are a must!” Luckily, Marion has some volunteers ready to lead her group. Thank you to Terry, Mona,
MaryAnn and Janet for stepping up.

this fundraiser is the only one from which Outreach keeps
all the proceeds to help fund all the other projects during
the year! Tickets are $6 each. Your ticket entitles you to
entrance and our delicious desserts made by members of
Outreach. Please bring a “new” item, wrapped, worth
at least $10 that will be auctioned off by our renowned
auctioneer, Marge Dillon.
Our Remembrance Program has not had many requests
for several months. This also helps to fund other projects
during the year. Please call Joan Link at 240-7616 for all
your special occasion cards, including birthday, get well
wishes, birth, death, anniversary, etc.
Memorial Program: Donations were made for the
following residents: Alan Kirby, Parkinson’s Disease Association; Alba Plover, The HOPE Center; Donald Garrell, St. Jude Children’s Hospital; Antoinette DeNezzo,
Alzheimer’s Association; and Annabelle Rudko, American
Cancer Society.
We and the Salvation Army cannot thank you enough
for the very generous donations to the Angel Tree this past
month. Some residents took only one tag, but purchased
several items, from coats, toys, games, clothing. soccer
balls, etc. Your generosity this past month was overwhelming.
For Christmas, Shop Rite gift cards were given to
The HOPE Center for distribution to needy families. At
the request of Catholic Charities in Lakewood, our shopping crew purchased toys for them to distribute to needy
families.
Again, the Food Box in the Multi-Purpose Room, –
please – we cannot stress enough – no glass jars, open
boxes of food or outdated food.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2014 was a good year for the
Community Players. Our USO Show in June and Old Hams
in November were two very successful shows for which
Kathy Sneddon can be very proud. Speaking of Old Hams,
did you notice the kitchen cabinets on the set? They were
drawn by the very talented Ed Handville. They were so
life-like, you would swear they were real. Jim Sneddon
and Tom Lawless painted the sets and Paul Farley, Alan
Rissmiller, Ray Sayegh and Rich Grisi helped Jim Sneddon
put up and take down the sets. Thank you, guys, the stage
looked beautiful. That was a lot of hard work and is very
much appreciated by the Community Players.
The “portrait” of Ophelia Davis, which hung in the
center of the stage, was painted by Fred Whitton (Eddie
Chambers in the play).
Kathy has already booked Sunday, June 28, - 2 pm –
for her next production. You can start looking forward to
another great variety show. I’ll have more information in
next month’s Pine Cone Press.
Tony Marino, too, is all set with his ideas for the November show. He is planning on doing excerpts from such
hits as Carousel, Guys & Dolls and Phantom of the Opera.
At this writing, Bunny Marino is recuperating from a
fractured shoulder and physical therapy is next on the list.
We wish her well.
In November we lost another favorite player – Marie
Della Bella. Marie was a long time member of the Community Players, always volunteering to help out at our
Board Meetings, seen on stage in various shows and some
years back wrote this column. She was also a member of
the Briartones for many years. They are now missing one
terrific alto. Among Marie’s many interests, she had a
lovely collection of eclectic purses and bags. She was an
asset to Greenbriar Woodlands and will be missed.

A Healthy and Happy New Year to all. I would like
to thank you for your continued support and hope that
you enjoyed our final performance of the year. We had
a very full schedule in 2014. The Charlottones had five
individual performances this year, two of which were here
at Greenbriar and the Briartones had 11 performances this
year with three of them at Greenbriar. We’re now on hiatus
until the Spring.
When the 2015 season begins, it would be wonderful
to see some new faces among us. Think about it over the
long, cold Winter. We’re not looking for professionals,
although that would be a plus. Reading music isn’t even a
criteria - you just have to like singing. Outside of our performances here, the people we entertain are in independent,
nursing, or assisted living facilities and they look forward
to our performances. We rehearse Thursday evenings and
enjoy a good laugh now and then even though Charlotte
is a tough drill sergeant.

January 2015! A brand new year. May it be happy and
healthy with many unbroken resolutions! How did 2014
pass so quickly? They say as we get older the time flies by
faster! It must be true!
Our December Holiday Luncheon was another huge
success as it took place on December 11 in our beautifully
decorated Clubhouse. It takes lots of work and planning
for these special events, so a big round of thanks to Joan
Duym and her many helpers for another job well done! And
thanks to those who decorate so beautifully!
One week prior to Christmas was our Garden Club bus
trip to Morvan Museum to see the Festival of Trees and
dinner at the Cranberry Inn. Another successful trip with
enough people to fill two buses! A good way to get in the
spirit of the Holidays.
Now onto the future -- our first meeting of the year will
be on January 8 at 1:30. Don’t forget to mark your calendar.
Our guest speaker will be Chris Claus and his topic will be
Cattus Island & Superstorm Sandy. We were fortunate this
past Summer/Fall with no real severe hurricanes or storms.
Now let’s hope for a not too stormy Winter!
We have many nice programs planned for the following months. We hope to see you at our meetings, always
a nice program, lots of friendly neighbors and delicious
desserts. Many are homemade by our wonderful bakers!

Happy New Year
Well, here we are, beginning another new year! May
we all enjoy good health and happiness.
The November program, The Photos and Stories of
Marine Wildlife, was a delightful voyage under the ocean,
which I dare say, many of us never experience. Mr. Segars
was his usual ebullient and personable self and kept the
audience entertained. We thank him for another delightful
and insightful program.
The Annual Holiday Luncheon held on December 17
at the Caffe Italia was also a success and enjoyed by all.
We extend many thanks to Judy for making all the arrangements. It was a delicious way to end the year and usher
in the holidays.
Our next theme for The Photo Gallery will be Doors,
Doorways & Knobs. We do hope residents are submitting
4 x 6 photographs. Our theme on Feet was such a huge
success we thought another unique take on life should be
offered again. We do hope many of you took us up on
our challenge. For our new residents, The Photo Gallery
is located in the Ceramic Room where the Camera Club
continually showcases photographs of our residents. Please
visit on your next trip into the Clubhouse.
The presentation to open the New Year is Shoot and
Scoot – Indochina by Ron Wyatt. His first experience
with a camera was with an instamatic and he learned that
camera shake will not produce great photos. He certainly
has moved on since those early days. He is self-taught and
has appeared in many publications; i.e. USA Today, Black
Enterprise Magazine, Time, Newsweek, TV Guide, ESPN
and others. He currently covers corporate assignments for
Six Flags, Eastman Kodak, CVS, Verizon and many others.
His program is designed to instruct us in the fundamentals
of shooting great vacation photos, as well as capturing the
flavor of local culture. He will discuss preparation for the
trip as well as photo gear. He will discuss “storytelling
with your camera,” offer tips for photographing people and
reveal his methods for obtaining great street photography.
It promises to be a wonderful, instructive and beautiful
presentation. Please join us at 7 pm in the Multi-Purpose
Room on Wednesday, January 21. As always, a Q&A
period will follow as well as refreshments.

For the month of December, we held our annual holiday
party at Woodlake Country Club. We had a lovely time
visiting with friends and making new ones.
The new year has arrived and we have a whole year
of programs and Dine-outs planned for the coming year.
On January 25 at 2 pm, we will be having Kimball
Hospital coming to speak to us about strokes.
February 17 at 3 pm we will be having a Wine tasting
get together. Kevin Donahue will be teaching how to choose
which wine for what food. There will be sandwiches,
cheese and fruit. Also, beverages for those who do not
drink wine.
March 10 will be a Dine-out at the Ocean County Mall
to Ichiban Restaurant at 1 pm.
So you can see we are going to be busy for the coming year.
On January 8, I will be going in to have shoulder

After the December pause, the College Program
resumes its offerings of intellectually stimulating, mindchallenging, art and music filled presentations.
This year will start with a lecture by David Bordelon,
titled “Reading in the Brain.” The technical term for this
topic is “Neuroscience of Reading.” This may sound rather
intimidating, but in reality it’s just an exploration of what
goes on inside our brain as we read anything, - a novel,
the newspaper, an ad, this very article. It explores what
goes on in our brain even as we scan individual letters in a
sentence. The lecture will explore our unmitigated “infatuation with narratives and the written word.” This sounds
quite intriguing to me.
David Bordelon is an associate professor of English at
Ocean County College in Toms River. According to “Rate
Your Professor” at the college, he receives the highest
praise a teacher can receive from his students, i.e., they
learn a lot from him.
His publications include essays and chapters on
nineteenth-century popular fiction, American book history,
and graphic narratives. “Always looking for a good book
to read,” he says. He’s well known to the book-loving
group in our community. You’re invited to join us for this
interesting lecture on Tuesday, January 20, 2015.

Well, the holidays are over and I hope Santa was good
to everyone. So, now its time to relax and come out to our
Girl Talk Coffee Klotch on Sunday, January 18 from 1 pm

Did you know? Did you know that the Women’s Club
has an activity bulletin board in Information Alley? It’s
located on the right hand side going into the Men’s Card/
Pool Room. Stop by and get the latest information.
Last month I met with the Scholarship Chairwomen
Lois Pilatowski, Barbara Jobin and Betty Snyder to plan
the scholarship event. We reorganized the letter to be
sent to the Senior Guidance Counselors and checked over
our scoring cards and assigned our various members who
indicated they would like to help out on Education to each
chairwoman. We will be in contact shortly to notify you
so you can help us evaluate the students.
Here’s what the Executive Board is working on. We
asked Alison McClellan, who is an artist, to develop a logo
for the Women’s Club. We think the logo will strengthen
our identity within our community. It clarifies our charter
which is to be more social, as well as be a charity organization. Check it out on our bulletin board in Information
Alley.

It’s a new year and all of us at the Greenbriar Bandstand
Club would like to wish you the wealth of close family and
dear friends and a very happy and healthy 2015.
I would like to thank all of you who attended our last
dance of the year, the “Bandstand Ball.” The energy in the
room was truly electric and fueled by great performances
by our own residents, Susan Finkelstein on jazz piano, and
our vocalists, Al Carbone, Pat Rodker and Joe Minardi .
And of course, our own Woody Remnant Band that closed
the evening with some old time rock and roll.
The feedback on this dance has been very much appreciated, and a special “thank you” to Jerry, Terry and
Michelle Medvetz, club members from the very start of
GBB, who took a moment of their time to call us and thank
us personally.
This month’s dance on Saturday, January 17 will
feature “Jersey Boys, Bands and Diva’s.” Who will be on
this lineup? Join us at the dance to hear selected songs from
famous performers who hailed from our own state of New
Jersey. You will be surprised at some of the not so obvious
stars in this category. (Hint: just “Google” it!)
A reminder that our membership dues are due by
March 1. Our dues for 2015 are now $11.00 per person.
Our dues not only include the monthly dances, with complimentary coffee, tea, and desserts, but also our line dance
workshops as well.
You may drop your checks off to us at any dance,
or to the front desk receptionist, made payable to “GW
Bandstand Club.” Checks only please.
We are looking forward to an exciting year, with new
DJ’s to cover when our JukeBox Junky’s are taking a break,
and a great dance band for our October anniversary dance.
Although our snowbirds have headed south for the
winter, we hope to see our steadfast members who “hold the
fort” through the winter, as well as new residents who are
invited to come out and enjoy an evening of great music,
great friends, great times.

Happy New Year! This is a time to start new things
so our new head librarians, Barbara Heise and Doris Hambach, are starting an informative writing about our library.
This library has been called “the best community library
in the area” by residents and visitors. This is due to the
wonderful collection of books that line the shelves and the
volunteer librarians who place the books in their proper
place on the shelves.
The library has a budget and part of that budget is
used to buy Large Print books. Note how many books are
in this section. If you read those books and do not find a
favorite author, drop a note in the small slot in the cabinet
just inside the library. We will check on it.
Books in all the other sections: Mystery, Novels,
Romance, Non-Fiction and Biography are donated by our
residents. New books, meaning those we do not have and
never had, are placed on the shelves on the last Tuesday
of each month. We appreciate all the donations, but please
note our criteria for shelving the books. Check the physical
appearance, date of publication (not before 2000) and part
of the already listed genre. Books that are donated and not
shelved are usually donated to other facilities. Occasionally some have to be recycled because of poor condition.
Donations should be placed in bags, not boxes, and
placed behind the easy chair in the library. The librarians
check on every book donated to see if it will become part
of our library. Thank you for the wonderful collection.

behalf of the Chess Club for donating her late husband’s
chess equipment and books to the Chess Club. It is by
far the best chess set the club owns. We are asking for

WHO AM I?
Frank Pinto
1. Born December 12, 1938, in Newark, NJ she was
a pop music star in the 1950s and 1960s and starred in a
number of films aimed at the teen market. She won first
place on the Arthur Godfrey’s Startime Talent Scouts at
the age of 12 and performed on the show for four years.
Following a November 1974 performance in Westbury,
NY she was the victim of a brutal rape and robbery when
an intruder broke into her hotel room an held her at knife
point. She was unable to sing for years after her attack,
but slowly recovered. Her autobiography “Who’s Sorry
Now” was released in 1984.

was really his mother. This painful revelation altered him
for the rest of his life. As he was struggling with ill health
over this period, he had a heart attack in January 1971. He
was in the process of making a comeback when he died

He received his first leading film role in “The Big Trail”
(1930). He got his next big break in “Stagecoach” in 1939.
His career as an actor took another leap when he starred in
the film “Red River” (1948). He won his only Academy
Award in 1969. He died of cancer in 1979.
5. He was born on January 26, 1935 in Cleveland,
Ohio. He turned to acting after getting kicked off the
football team in college. He made his Broadway debut
in “Picnic” in 1953 and began doing television and films,
eventually becoming known as one of the finest actors of
his time. In 1995, he served as part of the winning team
at the Rolex 24 at Daytona. He became the oldest driver
to win this 24 hour long race. He created a food company
in the 1980s that donates all proceeds to charity. He died
of cancer on September 26, 2008.
3. She was a comedian and actress who had a long
-running sketch and variety show in the 1960s and 1970s.
Born on April 26, 1933 in San Antonio, Texas she became
popular through television guest appearances before
receiving her own comedy-variety program in 1967.
The show ran for 11 seasons. She has also appeared in
a number of films and on Broadway. She published an
autobiography “One More Time” in 1986. In 2002 she
suffered a devastating loss when her oldest daughter died
of cancer. In 2013 she became the recipient of the Kennedy
Center Honors, one of the most respected awards given
to creative minds who influence American culture with
their arts.
6. Born June 8, 1933 in Brookyn, NY as Alexandra
Molinsky, she had a lot of plastic surgery and never denied
it and made lots of jokes about it. After graduating from
college, she was a shoe buyer for Lord and Taylor. She
hosted a late night show in 1986 on the Fox Network. In
1985 she was nominated for a Grammy for best comedy
recording. In 1994 she was nominated for Broadway’s
Tony Award as best actress for playing “Donna Marra and
Her Escorts” most of the time performing as a standup
comedian. On August 28,2014, she was rushed to Mount
Sinai Hospital after experiencing complications during
throat surgery. She passed away on September 8, 2014 at
the age of 81.

4. He was born Robert Cassotto in the Bronx, the son
of an Italian cabinet maker. As a child, he suffered from
severe rheumatic fever which led to a scarred heart. After
scratching out a living as a jingle composer, he became a
singer in 1956. In 1959, he won a Grammy for record of the
year and was voted best new artist. He was picked up by
Universal Pictures to star in films. He continued to appear

This is a real dedicated Bocce team.
The group was formed this year, in the
Spring, from a sign-up list. No one knew
each other but now they are the best of
friends. The group picked Jim White to be
the group leader along with his wife Diane.
It is the smallest and newest of the 15 groups
playing bocce.
I was ready to put the bocce equipment
away at the end of October, but they asked
if they could continue to play, which they
did till the middle of November. Here is

I wish you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year!
Another golf season has ended and I would like to
congratulate Pete LaRocca, his officers and Committee
Chair persons for a successful year. We had more members
participate in our tournaments and other events than we
have in quite awhile. Great job.
It is an honor for me to be addressing you as the new
president of our Golf Association. I know that with the new
officers and Committee Chairpersons we can continue to
make our association stronger and more successful.
A couple of events to remember this year are: Opening
Day Celebration on Saturday, March 7; our Golf Jamboree
on Saturday, May 9. (Gladys Weisbord has agreed to chair
this event again this year along with Bobbie Dooley); our
Golf Luncheon on Wednesday, October 14, hosted by Grace
Attanasio and Rose Kluxen. Please come out and support
these events. Thank you.
Saturday, November 8 was a little chilly but 8 women
and 48 men played in our Thanksgiving Day Scramble.
Two teams were: tied for first place. They were: Dick
Wheaton, Mike Grisi, John Toolen and Lourdes Pos-

Boyd and Betty Detrano. Their score was 55. The second place team was Frank Gagliano, Peter Cokefair, Bob

teams tied for third place with a score of 57. Individual
prizes awarded were: closest to the pin won by John Toolen
on hole #4 and Nancy Meehan on hole #5; longest drives
on #14 were hit by Bob Kerekes and Maureen Castellano;
closest to the center line on #14 were hit by Dick Wheaton
and Betty DeTrano. Congratulations to all. Total prizes
paid out were $368. In addition, tickets were drawn for 10
gift certificates worth $10 for turkeys. Our Tournament
Co-Chairs were Vin Aromando and Bob Garbaccio. Thank
you for a job well done. Thank you to all the volunteers
who made sure all was ready for the tournament: Jim
McLane, Connie Pinto, Paul Farley, Bob Stevenson, Tony
Panaccione, Joe Goodman, Bob Garbaccio, Vin Aromando,

We didn’t walk far enough to enjoy much conversation
but we still had a good time. The weather turned much
colder during November and there was a very hard rainstorm a few days before our last walk of the season and the
outcome was very much in doubt on the third Wednesday
of the month. But your Walking Club has a few hardy
souls who are up for almost anything so, with only a slight
change of plans, six regulars ended up doing a brisk and
most enjoyable turn around our own lovely village.

Back To The Fifties

Do you remember those wonderful days...................
The decade began with Harry Truman as President.
T.V. was in its infancy. Everyone was watching Uncle
Milty (Milton Burle) on Tuesday nights. Elvis was the
King. The hula-hoop was the fad. We were dancing the
lindy hop and the stroll. Elvis had blue suede shoes. Pat
Boone had white bucks and Bobby Darin was splishn’ and
a splashin’. We had three baseball teams in New York: The
Brooklyn Dodgers, The New York Giants and The New
York Yankees. Rocky Marciano was the heavyweight
champion.
In the movies, we were watching Marlon Brando in
“The Wild One” and “On The Waterfront.” Who could
ever forget Marilyn Monroe in “The Seven Year Itch?”
Almost everyone went to church on Sunday. On hot summer nights in Brooklyn most of the neighbors would sit
outside on the stoop and talk.
We would play ring-aleave-o, Johnny on the pony,
stoopball, punch ball and stickball in the streets. You were
pretty good if you could hit 2 sewers.
We drank root beer floats, lime Rickys and chocolate
egg creams. I can remember going to the neighborhood

drugstore where they had a fountain where we would buy
mellow rolls and charlotte rouses. The ice cream truck,
Bungalow Bar, would come twice a day. The bells would
ring and we would go running to get our ice cream. The
girls would play jacks, hopscotch and jump rope. They
were wearing poodle skirts and bobby socks. Their hair
was in a ponytail.
I remember the Del Vikings, singing “Come Go With
Me,” The Heartbeats singing “You’re a Thousand Miles
Away,” Penguins singing “Earth Angel,” Dion and The
Belmonts singing “Teenager In Love.” If only I could
go back to those days of the past. How I remember those
wonderful days.
So go put your dancing shoes on and let’s lindy and just
remember those oldies but goodies that remind me of you.

The cold weather makes it hard to get motivated
to go outdoors and shoot, but there are some great
photo opportunities to be had in winter. Make
certain you dress for the cold and watch for ice!
Even when there is no snow, icy pond make
great subjects. Look for ducks, geese, or sea
gulls standing on the ice. Ice also makes for great
reflection images. Many normal scenes take on a
new meaning in the cold of winter
after a snowfall there are great shots
everywhere. The challenge with snow shots is
getting the proper exposure. a very bright snowy
scene tricks you camera into thinking there is
too much light, so the camera will cut back on
exposure. This makes the snow in your images
look gray. If you know how to set your exposure
compensation, increase the exposure by 1 stop
to brighten the snow. If your camera has “scene”
modes, use the one for snow or beach.
The bare leafless trees make nice silhouette
shots and are very good for black and white
photography. They are especially effective with a
sunrise or sunset behind them.
