Thank you for your kind and loving support of your parish priests: Fr. John, Fr. Aaron and Fr. We want to take this opportunity to extend our words and sentiments of gratitude to you for your cards, gifts and good wishes. May God bless you and your loved ones today and throughout the New Year! Page Three “ Merry Christmas and a Happy and Blessed New Year!” As we are still in the Christmas Season it is appropriate to continue to wish each other a Merry Christmas. This week we will begin the start of the New Year so I extend to each one of you a Happy and Blessed New Year as well. The start of the New Year is traditionally the time to make resolutions. I hope that my column last week was helpful to that end. I think that the one resolution we Catholics should all be making each year at its beginning would be to live our lives as authentically and “intentionally” as we can. On January 1st we also observe the Feast of Mary, the Mother of God. This feast is an additional opportunity to focus on the Christmas mystery and what we believe about the child born of Mary. Jesus is truly God’s Son and Mary is His Mother. Therefore, we rightfully and respectfully call her “the Mother of God.” Mary is the perfect model for us as the disciples of her son, Jesus. In her littleness she was open and willing to do God’s bidding and will. That was not always easy for her but her love for God fueled her resolve. Our love for God can do the same. This weekend we are celebrating the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. This is a wonderful feast to observe in the midst of the Christmas Season, as the family is the center of life for most of us and the basic unit of society. Let us pray for the strengthening of all families and for the coming Ordinary Synod on the Family taking place this spring as a follow-up to the Extraordinary Synod that recently took place in Rome. “The primary intention of the Synod is to promote the Catholic Christian vision of the family, to help families live more fully the vocation to which they have been called, and to support them in the struggles they face. At the October Synod several. . .issues related to this process emerged: among these were 1) divorced and “remarried” Catholics receiving Communion, 2) the pastoral care of persons with homosexual tendencies, and 3) issues regarding life.” (Aleteia: Seekers of the Truth Blog) Following the example of Jesus, we entrust our families to His Mother, Mary, who is also the Mother of the Church. She is our guide, protector and help. May Our Blessed Mother, together with St. Joseph, intercede on behalf of all of our families; especially, on this wonderful feast day. 435 St. James Page Four The HolySunday, FamilySunday of Jesus, and Time Joseph Twenty-Sixth February in Mary Ordinary 2, 2014 The Winner of the 2014 Christmas 50/50 Raffle is: William and Jeanne Derleth of Bethpage The Parish received $8,510.00 and the winner received $8,510.00. The home of the Holy Family was a simple one. Jesus was a child who laughed and cried and played as other children do. Under the care of Mary and Joseph, Jesus learned about God's covenant with the chosen people. He prayed with his parents in the synagogue. In a family warmed with faith and love and peace, he grew in wisdom, age, and grace. Families are made up of people who belong to and care for one another in good times and in bad. Luke's Gospel reminds us that Jesus understood what it means to be a part of a family. Ask him to help you to grow as he did, in wisdom, so that the grace of God will rest upon you too. How is faith communicated to children by their parents? How have your parents helped you to become a faithful person? What sentences in this reading help us to understand how Mary and Joseph helped Jesus to become a faithful human person? Can children also strengthen their parent's faith? Upcoming Events 8th Grade - Confirmation projects # 2, 3, 4 and 5 are due January 6, 2015. Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences are on January 13, 2015 at assigned times. There will be no regular class this evening. 7th Grade - Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences are on January 15, 2015 at assigned times. There will be no regular class this evening.
