The Samuel Courtauld Society Berlin from Second Empire to Post‐Wall: Art, Architecture & Memory 11th ‐ 15th June 2015 With Dr Shulamith Behr [This Itinerary is subject to amendment and private visits are subject to reconfirmation] Introduction Berlin is one of Europe’s most underrated cultural capitals and presents a thrilling mix of museums, art and architecture. It has many surprises in store for the cultural visitor. You will be based in the 5 star Hotel de Rome (Rocco Forte) for four nights, a short walk away from Museum Island, in the cultural heart of Berlin. You will enjoy six private visits to important museums and private collections, two walks curated specially for this trip, and a very special lecture on the Gurlitt Discovery, one of the biggest stories of the 21st century art world. There will be a very special day trip to Potsdam where you will see parts of the palace complex not shown to the public. Dr Shulamith Behr will lead the trip, bringing her unique insights into this great city and she will be joined by Courtauld PhD Lucy Watling and Berlin based art historian Dr Anke Daemgen. James McDonaugh will be managing the trip. Honorary Research Fellow Dr Behr is a specialist in the study of German Expressionism and has lectured on German art at the Courtauld since 1990. She is published widely in the field: as an editor, jointly with David Fanning and Douglas Jarman, of Expressionism Reassessed (Manchester University Press, 1993), as the curator ‐ and author of the accompanying catalogues ‐ of exhibitions on Conrad Felixmüller at the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery (Leicester) and at The Courtauld Gallery in 1994. She has published widely on the contribution of women artists to German and Swedish modernism, starting with her Women Expressionists (Phaidon, Oxford, 1988) to essays for catalogues of the Gabriele Münter (1992‐93) and Sigrid Hjérten (1999) retrospectives held in Germany and Stockholm. Dr Behr’s research on art and exile is published in the volume Arts in Exile in Britain 1933‐

Highlights will include the South Wing of the Pergamonmuseum, featuring the Market Gate of Miletus, the Ishtar Gate and Processional Way from Babylon, and the Museum of Islamic Art. Insight will be given into the history of the collection in light of archaeological finds and fascination with the Orient in the 19th and early 20th centuries: the façade from the palace of Mshatta was presented to Kaiser Wilhelm II by the Sultan Abdülhamid II 11.30 Coffee 12‐1.15Visit the Neues Museum: set within a fabulously renovated space by David Chipperfield lie treasures of ancient Egypt and Greece, including the 3,250 year old bust of Queen Nefertiti. In this museum the architecture frequently steals the show from the exhibits – the sight of the grand pre‐war exhibition spaces, scarred by fighting and then years of exposure to the elements, is one of Berlin’s more moving experiences 1.30 Lunch in a private room at ‘Borchardt’, one of the city’s classic restaurants on a beautiful square Gendarmenmarkt Return to the hotel and rest 4.30 Dr Meike Hoffmann will give a private lecture at the hotel on Hildebrand Gurlitt as an art dealer in the Third Reich, his concealed collection and its discovery: this will bring unique insight into one of the greatest art discoveries of the 21st century, while it is still unfolding 6 Depart the hotel by bus 6.30 Private visit to the Boros Collection: this is a private collection of contemporary art. It contains groups of works by international artists dating from 1990 to the present. Visit will include permanent works as well as an exhibition on early works Vincent Van Gogh, and there will be time to explore the beautiful garden with stunning lakeside views 11 Coffee in the garden café with lovely views over the lake at Wannsee 11.30 Return to Berlin by bus 12 Visit Museum Island with Dr Shulamith Behr: return for a second visit to the island and visit Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) inaugurated in 1876. Under the aegis of the controversial director Hugo von Tschudi (1896‐
1908), the collection policy became decidedly modern and French, much to the distaste of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Enjoy a number of the finest Impressionist works and modern German paintings from Leibl and Liebermann, to Symbolists Böcklin and von Marées. She was a painter, printmaker and sculptor whose works focus on the searing tragedy of war.
