The opening of the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing
Arts has introduced a new era of creativity, expression and educational opportunity at Messiah College. And now I am delighted to invite you to be a part
of the cultural life of this magnificent new venue during our 2014-2015 season.
Engage the arts and humanities through a special yearlong series of lectures,
theatrical productions and concerts featuring our talented student and
faculty performers, as well as distinguished guest lecturers and visiting
performing artists.
While you are here, you will see (and hear) for yourself why the High Center
is quickly becoming known as one of the acoustically and aesthetically finest

manhattan transfer: Living Room Sessions
Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, 8 p.m.
Parmer Hall
Considered the greatest vocal group in history for broadening the musical landscape with their innovative jazz/pop sound, The Manhattan Transfer’s presentation of “The Living Room Sessions” will take the audience on a journey from
their early days through their long and successful career to the present.
The group will share some of the stories behind the music—their inspirations,
collaborations and tales from the studio and the road. Accompanied by piano
and bass, The Manhattan Transfer will perform some of their biggest hits as
well as some lesser-known and never-released tunes.
Long known as musical pioneers, the platinum-selling super group made Grammy history by becoming the first to simultaneously win a Grammy in both the
jazz and pop categories. The group, which is a member of the Vocal Group Hall
of Fame, has won 10 Grammys and been nominated for 17.

The Mendelssohn Piano Trio presents
a second program of the complete
Beethoven’s piano trios cycle. This program offers a unique insight into the
evolution of Beethoven’s compositional
style and an overview of his extraordinary
legacy. Compositions from early, middle
and late Beethoven will offer a journey
from the witty Piano Trio Op. 1, No. 1 to
masterful “Kakadu” Variations, Op. 121
and the festive Piano Trio Op. 70, No. 2.

As one of the most recognized historians of
the day, Doris Kearns Goodwin’s new book,
“The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of
Journalism,” is a dynamic history of the first
decade of the Progressive Era, that tumultuous time when the nation was coming
unseamed and reform was in the air.
Author of several best-selling books, Goodwin
won the Pulitzer Prize for “No Ordinary Time:
Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home
Front in World War II.” A contributor both
on and off the air to the PBS documentaries
“LBJ,” “The Kennedys,” and “FDR and Baseball,” Goodwin is the person most turn to for
a keen historical perspective on political and
current events.

book, “Team of Rivals,” was produced by
Steven Spielberg and premiered in November
2012 to rave reviews and multiple Golden
Globe and Oscar nominations. Dreamworks

acquired the film rights to “The Bully Pulpit.”

An award-winning journalist, Michele Norris
is currently a host and special correspondent
for NPR. Previously, Norris served as co-host
of NPR’s “All Things Considered,” public
radio’s longest-running national program.
Norris and “All Things Considered” received
many of journalism’s highest honors, including a Peabody Award, duPont Award,
an Overseas Press Club Award, and she was
named the 2009 Journalist of the Year by the
National Association of Black Journalists.
Before joining NPR, she served as a correspondent for ABC News, where she reported
extensively on education, inner city issues,
the national drug problem and poverty.
While at ABC, Norris earned an Emmy Award
and Peabody Award for her contribution to
the network’s coverage of 9/11.
Norris is the author of the 2010 best-selling
memoir, “The Grace of Silence,” which began

as a quest to uncover how America talked
about race in the wake of the 2008 presidential election and became an eye-opening
family history lesson revealing Norris’ family’s racial legacy and a window on America’s
complicated racial history. The book also led
to “The Race Card Project,” a blog that asks
people to submit their thoughts and observations about race in six words.

brimstone Requiems of the likes of Berlioz
and Verdi, Johannes Brahms’s “A German
Requiem” is a work of peaceful consolation
and surpassing beauty. These performances

the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra
presents the 1st Symphony of Pulitzer Prizewinning American composer, Kevin Puts.
