through a battle that threatens to destroy the
people they love around them?
A
This movie transplants the classic tale of “Romeo
and Juliet” to the Upper West Side of New
York City in the 1950s. The two feuding families
are replaced by brawling street gangs. The
Montagues become the Anglo Jets, led by Riff,
and the Capulets become the Puerto Rican
Sharks, led by Bernardo.
At a dance, Tony, former leader of the Jets and
Riff ’s best friend, and Maria, Bernardo’s little sister,
see each other across the room and it’s love
at first sight. With opposition from both sides,
they meet secretly and their love grows deeper.
However, the gangs are plotting one last rumble,
Much like Romeo and Juliet, we are swept into
their dilemma; the dark theme, sophisticated
music, extended dance scenes, and focus on
social problems marked a turning point in
American musical theatre.

evalyn parry takes her audience
on a unique theatrical and musical
journey in SPIN, her tribute to
the Bicycle as muse, musical instrument and
agent for social change. Spinning a web
of stories that travel from 19th century
women’s emancipation to 21st century
consumer culture, SPIN is inspired by the
incredible true tale of the first woman to ride
around the world on a bicycle in 1895. One
part documentary and another part musical
activism, parry cleverly peels back layers of
history to reveal a very contemporary heart
to her theme of liberation.
The bicycle - parry’s “co-star” - is transformed
into a captivating instrument on stage:
suspended on a mechanic’s stand and
amplified with simple electronics, the bike
is played by percussionist Brad Hart with
bows, brushes and sticks, from fenders to
spokes to seat, from flashing bike lights
to whirring pedals to bells, conjuring an
evocative accompaniment to evalyn’s songs
and monologues.

ohn Reischman and The Jaybirds are a topflight band delivering a truly fresh blend of
original songs and instrumentals, old-time
heritage, and bluegrass power.
Years of European and North American tours, five
critically acclaimed albums, two Juno nominations
and two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations
… little wonder, the buzz around the band
continues to grow. Like the mandolinist at its
helm, the group fashions a stylish, elegant take on
bluegrass that is at once innovative and unadorned,
sophisticated and stripped-down, happily oldfashioned, yet unselfconsciously new. To see
their live show is to believe it. A genial blend of
story-telling and side-show humour provides the
backdrop to their studied performance of original
songs, instrumentals, and newly arranged traditional
material.
Hailing from the variegated ranks of the
contemporary West Coast acoustic music
scene, each of these “birds” has certainly
earned his wings: the list of projects they have
contributed to over the years is nothing less
than a short list of acoustic power houses.
Together, their seamless ensemble work
makes for one of the freshest, most tasteful
band-sounds on the folk and bluegrass circuit
today.

CHRISTOPHER
HUNT
I
WHEN
THAT I WAS
t’s 1650, and the Puritans have closed
the theatres. Old Jack Rice was once a
famous actor and now is down on his luck.
As a boy, he performed in Shakespeare’s
troupe, and he’s snuck back into the deserted
theatre for some shelter. He himself is nothing
more than a dusty, abandoned old scrap of
humanity - but his memory can take us to
Queen Elizabeth’s palace, to the opening night
of King Lear, and everywhere in between.
When That I Was is an award-winning oneman play in two acts, co-written by Edward
Atienza and John Mortimer. The show sees
Hunt perform over 25 characters, moving
seamlessly between Rice, Will Shakespeare
and even Queen Elizabeth among many
others. The busy, funny, lively world of
Shakespeare’s troupe comes alive in the
imaginations of the audience as it does in the
memory of the narrator, Jack Rice, while at
the same time emphasizing his present-time
loneliness and isolation, in contrast to the
bustling world he used to inhabit.
Although set in Elizabethan England, When
That I Was has much to say about the
present. It speaks of aging, of homelessness,
and of the role the arts can play in a
community, providing comfort and joy in dark
times. It’s funny, sad, literate, theatrical and
very entertaining. It’s for all ages. It’s Canadian,
and it’s universal too.

“To enjoy When That I Was... you don’t really
have to be a student of the Bard, or for that
matter, of theatre in general, because it stands
as a great tale spun by a master storyteller.”

NEW THEATRE
D
DETOUR
etour is the story of a man and woman
from the “Walkman” era. Drawing from
the minimalist tradition of Japanese Noh
theatre, it contains no spoken words, and
relies instead on exaggerated physical movements
and subtle variations in costume, set and sound
design to tell its tale of a couple who used to go
the record store to buy music on cassette tapes.
They are comfortable with the simplistic devices
of days gone by. But modern technology is taking
over; flashy gadgets and the newest contraptions
are around every corner. Smartphones subliminally
whisper “Look at me! I’m so easy, fast and sexy,
everything is at your fingertips!”
They can’t trust their fingertips on their
smartphones, and they are not confident wading
through this sleek new world. They see their
familiar load of emotional baggage being dragged
around in their routine everyday lives. They are
not sure they are connecting with the people that
live in same house with them. They don’t feel slim
and sexy enough to join in the outside world.
Many people embrace this novelty-charged
wave, without any hesitation. It makes them
feel an expanded connection. They are in touch
with infinite information and millions of friends
anywhere, at any time.
Hiromoto Ida’s career began as an actor, which
led him to dance. He is now exploring a new
style of expression that he describes as “elusive
theatre”; storytelling that is not strictly dance with
no dialogue. In this performance Ida interpolates
some of the movement WATER STATION, by
Shogo Ota.

But the couple in this story are not tech savvy.
They missed the high tech ornamented wave and
fall rather hopelessly, floating in the murky water,
watching the cool surfers ride the big waves.
Can they be saved? Can they find each other
again in this high tech world? While this play is
based on traditional dramatic elements, it is a
contemporary play. Ida talks about you and me –
traditional theatre never does that. That’s how he
deviates from the past.

CINDERELLA
T
his ballet in three acts by Bengt Jörgen
is an innovative take on the classic fairy
tale. Jörgen’s choreography balances
the fairy tale elements of the story
with a contemporary treatment of Cinderella
and her family relationships. Returning to the
original Russian tradition of having women
perform the roles of the stepsisters, Jörgen
builds a more realistic and human look at
Cinderella and her circumstances, and then uses
these scenes to both counterpoint and highlight
the magical aspects of the story.
Glenn Davidson’s set design creates a fantastical
environment based on the idea of the natural
world reclaiming man-made structures.
Inspiration for the set pieces is drawn from ice
storms and old forests.
Costume designs by Robert Doyle playfully
echo each character’s personality. Ballet Jörgen’s
Cinderella is a classical ballet with modern,
dramatic sensibilities.
“This is a honey of a production –
one that brings magic back to
the ballet stage.”
Bengt Jörgen is the current Artistic Director
Producer of Ballet Jörgen Canada and George

BALLET

A
bandoned by her mother at birth,
raised by her grandmother in a brothel,
encouraged to sing by her street
acrobat father, Edith Piaf became one
of France’s most legendary singers of all times.
“Edith Piaf was known as ‘The Little Sparrow’
because she was only 4’ 8” tall, yet she had an
astonishing voice that soared to incredible highs
and sorrowful lows,” says Igor Dobrovolskiy,
Atlantic Ballet Theatre Artistic Director and
Choreographer. “Her life was fraught with tragedy
and loss, and it is a privilege for Atlantic Ballet
Theatre to interpret her dramatic life story
through dance.”
This outstanding dance performance is a tourde-force of music and song. Piaf ’s music and life
is beautifully interpreted through the power of
dance. The musical score features Edith Piaf ’s
inimitable voice and music, interspersed with
classical selections from Fauré, Chopin, and others.
Iconic songs include “La Vie en rose,” “Non, je ne
regrette rien,” and “L’Hymne à l’amour.” The title
role is danced by Olga Petiteau of Paris, France.
The exceptional dancers of Atlantic Ballet Theatre
of Canada who hail from seven counties explore
a life shrouded in mystery, love, and tragedy
reflected in the authentic and life-inspired songs
of the great Edith Piaf. The presentation weaves
dramatic narrative with inventive choreography to
create powerful, emotional and lyrical forms which
explore the human condition. Drawing on an
extensive musical, literary and dance background
Dobrovolskiy uses the foundation of classical ballet
technique as a springboard for an expressive
dance lexicon.
The company performs throughout Canada, as
well as in the United States, Belgium, Switzerland,
France, and Germany.

eath meets his match in Mrs. Fischer, a
tenacious granny not ready to breathe
her last. In this multi award winning
full-face mask comedy from physical
theatre company WONDERHEADS, an aging
grandmother is pitted against none other than
the Grim Reaper and confronts the inevitable
question: what is it to know your end is nigh?
Can you ignore death? Can you escape death?
Can you hit death in the face with a frying pan?
A tender telling of an absurdly epic journey; one
woman’s fight for survival takes fantastical fight in a
showdown with Grim himself.
Grim and Fischer is a new dish made of old
ingredients. It is performed in full-face mask, a
wordless, whimsical form rarely seen on North
American stages which audiences have described
as watching a living cartoon, or ‘live-action Pixar’.
And like a cartoon, the power of Grim and Fischer
lies in its ability to step away from the sharpness
of reality and offer a different lens though which
to examine a deeper, darker universal struggle: our
fear of death. In this distinct style of storytelling,
with a rich soundscape, timeless slapstick and
masterful physical performances, Grim and Fischer
takes its audience on a profound journey that is at
turns both hilarious and heart-breaking.
