Hello
Welcome to our new autumn-winter season which we’ve squeezed
more events into than ever before. This season offers some of the
most innovative new theatre and modern classics plus a fantastic
variety of one off events exclusively on the Coliseum stage.
Within these pages you will find the lowdown on our hugely
exciting season and our famous Season Ticket deal which again
remains the best value theatre offer in the region.
We open with Willy Russell’s classic musical Our Day Out, which is
followed by a brand new show from the Coliseum’s favourite duo,
the inimitable Lip Service. Later the mood changes as the house
lights dim and a chilling, terrifying atmosphere descends for a
spine tingling adaptation of The Mist in the Mirror by Susan Hill,
author of the hugely popular The Woman in Black.
As ever, I’d like to personally thank you for your continued support
of the Coliseum. As a producing theatre we are immensely proud
of our home grown productions on offer this season, as well as

classroom for a day to pile into a bus for a one-off school
trip in the Coliseum’s latest actor/musician ensemble and
musical spectacular. This hilarious and heart warming tale
from the multi award-winning author of Educating Rita
and Blood Brothers, sees the talented young cast singing
and dancing rings around their fraught teachers.
Our Day Out – The Musical will transport you to the

Award winning Lip Service return to the Coliseum. These
firm favourites have previously performed to packed houses
in Inspector Norse and Desperate to be Doris.
Doreen Gray has it all, a drive time radio show, a high
ratings lifestyle programme on Even More 4, but hitting
50, Doreen finds her face no longer fits the bill. At a school
reunion she stumbles across a youthful self portrait and
makes a dark and dreadful pact with the picture. Featuring
community actors as Doreen’s school mates live on stage
and on film.

Adapted from the writer of The Woman in Black, this tense
and atmospheric new production is an otherworldly mystery
that leaves a terrifying eeriness suspended in the air.
A ghostly chill falls over the Coliseum this autumn with a
traveller’s strange tale of threats from beyond the grave.
The Mist in the Mirror is a gothic fireside ghost story
which the audience is invited to eavesdrop on. Visual
theatre innovators imitating the dog will once again
be on hand to create an unnerving ethereal atmosphere
before the show even begins and an unsettling feeling that
might just follow you home at the end of the night too…

Middle Ground Theatre Company is delighted to present
Richard Harris’ acclaimed psychological thriller, which
enjoyed a successful nine year run in the West End.
Stone, a humourless and dour man, invites Dee, a
television playwright, over to his flat on the premise of
discussing a script. Once there, she is surprised when
Superintendent Hallett, the man with whom she is having
an affair, also arrives for an entirely different reason.
But nothing is as it seems and as the plot twists and turns
the motive of their host, Stone, gradually becomes clear.
They are all, it would seem, in the same business...

The Coliseum becomes your very own comedy
club in this fun filled night of laughs, compered by
Manchester’s own Paul Haslam.
Join The Houghton Weavers for an evening of folk
and comedy. Over the past three decades the trio have
released over thirty albums, numerous DVDs and have
numerous radio and television appearances to their
credit, including their own series Sit Thi Deawn.
Punchlines derive their humour from being
unexpected – ‘Punch’ indicating that the ‘Line’ should
always come as a surprise or shock. The major school
of thought suggests that very few Punchlines are
inherently funny out of context. There is another
school of thought (actually Dave’s school of thought)
that the opposite can be true. In this new show he
will present evidence to support this. He quotes: “Put some cold water in” / “As long as you don’t
push me past my mothers” / No nurse I said prick his
boil! and “That’s my Thermos flask!”

The Houghton Weavers consist of Tony Berry, lead
singer and front man, David Littler on Guitar, Banjo,
Mandolin and Vocals, and Steve Millington on
Keyboards, Guitar, Bass, Banjo, Ukulele, Mandolin,
Accordion and Vocals.
Together they entertain their audiences with humorous
jokes and anecdotes and sing popular folk songs from
raucous traditional songs to beautiful ballads done in
their own inimitable style.
Then of course there’s Nuns. Nuns in baths, Nuns on
bikes and Prince Charles wearing a fox hat.
Dave will also argue that you don’t always need a
Punchline for a joke to be hilarious and suggests that if
you doubt him, you should ask the bloke with the big
orange head.

together. Their trip is kept secret from disapproving parents
and of course Alan’s fiancée Beatrice until a dramatic
turn of events exposes the affair. Fanny soon finds herself
fighting for her independence in the face of pressures to
marry and become an ‘honest woman’.

Set during Wakes Week in Lancashire Hindle Wakes is
a funny and compelling rejection of archaic attitudes and
champions early female independence. Written in 1910, it
was a hugely controversial play and one of the first to have
a working class female lead.
Hindle Wakes is witty, charming, humorous and not shy
of the euphemisms either, whilst celebrating the early
emancipation of women’s rights.

The Snatchabook has been shortlisted for the best
picture book in this year’s Oldham Libraries Brilliant
Book Awards.
Performed by the Coliseum’s award winning Young
Rep Company, winners of three National 2013 Family
Arts Festival awards for their production of My Friend
Nigel, The Snatchabook is the latest in a series of
community based tours produced by the Coliseum’s
Learning and Engagement Department.
