We are a faith community praying, believing, and living as disciples through prayer, faith formation, education, social activities, and outreach to those in need. We invite you to fully be a part of the Saint Catherine Labouré family! Please be in touch. We look forward to walking with you! God bless you! Dear Parish Family: When we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, as we do today, it offers us the opportunity to take a re-newed look at our own Baptism and what it means to us. Baptism is the prime sacrament for the Christian. Through Baptism, a person is welcomed into the company of Jesus and a member of the Body of Christ. The washing that takes place at Baptism cleanses us from sin and makes us a new creation, filled with grace and called to be a witness of the Resurrection of the Lord throughout our lives. Baptism literally gets us going on the road to eternal life. Our Lord was “Baptized” in the Jordan by John. Jesus did not need Baptism. He had no sin to wash away. He had no need for conversion or a change of heart. He didn’t need to be made into a new creation. He is the new creation itself! As we will pray at Mass today: John baptized Christ, the giver of baptism, in waters made holy by the one who was baptized. Jesus is the one who gave us baptism, not the other way around. But, Jesus chose to be baptized in order to give us an example: that through Baptism we are made new – we die to sin and rise to new life in Christ. This is a wonderful mystery and a tremendous gift for us. Today let’s think—really think—about what our Baptism means. This Sunday, as we celebrate the Baptism of our Lord, it is an opportunity to remember our own Baptism. Do we know where and when we were baptized? Who are our godparents? What priest or deacon baptized us? Is there a picture of our Baptism? Do we know where our baptismal candle and baptismal garment are? I asked myself these questions and realized that I knew some but not all the answers. I knew the church and who my godparents were (my aunt and uncle Catherine and Richard Hastings) and so I contacted the church where I was baptized (Saint Joseph Church on the Avenue of the Americas in New York City) and found out that I was baptized on February 25, 1968 by Father Victor Raigan. I challenge you to do the same. While we are Baptized only once, living our Baptism is a choice and commitment that we make every day, sometimes moment by moment. Living our Baptism is called discipleship. And so as we celebrate the Lord’s Baptism and remember our own, may we commit ourselves each day to live as authentic disciples of the Lord—genuine friends of Jesus, ready to serve Him with our whole lives, praying, believing, and living as disciples every day, moment by moment. Love, grace, and peace, Father Neil Sullivan Be part of our eVangelization movement. Growing Disciples. 717.564.1760 | www.stcatherinelaboure.org Our School Musical In 1933, the United States was in the depths of the Great Depression, which was not only an economic crisis, but an emotional blow that shattered the hopes and dreams of many Americans. In an orphanage in New York City at that challenging time, there lived a little girl who rose above her “Hard Knock Life” to invite us all to believe “the sun will come out tomorrow.” Everyone knows that sweet child was “Annie” who became not only part of a Broadway show and movie, but will also be the star of our School Musical for this Spring. The students have begun their rehearsals as singers, dancers, and actors, as well as stage crew and scenery artists. Some of the over 40 participants are: Nora Suknaic as “Annie,” Amelia Barkman as “Miss Hannigan,” Matthew Yoffe as “Oliver Warbucks,” Teresa Palmer as “Grace Farrell,” Ian Peradilla as “Rooster Hannigan,” and Natalie Torta as “Lily St. Regis.” Can’t wait to see “Annie” on April 16/17! Be sure to check the Catholic Witness newspaper and www. hbgdiocese.org for more info on diocesan events. If not, we invite you to register! Parish registration is more important than many of us realize. In order for children to receive the Sacrament of Baptism, Confirmation, or Eucharist, their family must be registered in a Catholic parish. To be married in the Catholic Church, at least one party must be registered in a Catholic parish. Potential godparents must get a letter from the parish where they are registered to verify their eligibility to serve as a godparent. When people wait to the last minute to request this letter, they may not be able to get it right away if they are not registered – so don’t delay! Registration helps us know who you are and communicate important parish info to you. Young adults (who have finished school) who are registered under their parents should complete a new registration. Registration is easy! Simply request a form from the parish office or register at www.sclhbg.org - it’s that simple! We’ll be happy to welcome you to our family! T he devil is afraid of us when we pray and make sacrifices. He is also afraid when we are humble and good. He is especially afraid when we love Jesus very much.
