News of Living Hope
As Christians we are called to live a life of Discipleship.
A part of Discipleship is understanding and practicing stewardship of our time, talents, presence, gifts and witness.
We are to mature in our faith and let the Holy Spirit shape
our lives as Disciples of Jesus Christ; to be realized in all
we do!
In order for Living Hope to be healthy and vital we need to understand what it
takes to operate as a Church and to be in mission and ministry. This presentation
will show you how we did last year. (And how last year stacks up against years
past.) Something for EVERYONE in this presentation. We hope you will attend
to learn and be more involved in the financial operation of Living Hope.
(Sandwiches and chips will be served!)
A Fresh Start
A new year! That means it’s time to swear off all our bad habits, over-commit to
everything we know we’re supposed to be doing to care for ourselves and our relationships, and jump in with both feet even though most of us haven’t recovered from the holiday bustle yet, right? I fall into that routine as much as anyone else, but just by joining us
for worship, I want to offer you a different kind of fresh start this year.
On January 4, when we celebrate the wise men (finally!) arriving to greet the Baby
Jesus, we’ll be reminded that the old saying is true: Better late than never. Even if we
wander a bit, take a wrong turn, get lost along the way, and bring less-than-practical gifts
with us, seeking the Christ Child will always lead us to him.
Kids grow up fast, don’t they? By January 11, we’ll meet the grown-up Jesus on
the banks of the Jordan River and witness his baptism. Remembering Jesus’ baptism is
always a joy for me because I pair it with asking everyone to remember (or anticipate) his
or her own baptism. The waters of baptism are absolutely about a fresh start, a new beginning, an opportunity to be washed in grace! On this particular day, we’ll celebrate both
sacraments—Holy Communion and baptism.
By January 18, it will be high time we remember, celebrate, and commission our
new leaders! We’ll recognize new members of the Staff-Parish Relations Committee and
Leadership Team. I believe they have been gifted by God for this work, but we want
them to start fresh and to be surrounded by prayer for all that lies ahead of them. We’ll
also have a “State of the Church Address” on this day in worship. We’ll look at where
we’ve been, where we are, and where God is leading us in the New Year. Following the
second service, Ted Wimer will show us the numbers and help us to understand where
we are as a church in terms of financial health. (If you’re interested in where your financial gifts are put to use, you’ll want to be sure to attend this gathering at 12:30 p.m. on
Sunday, January 18 in the sanctuary.)
Finally, on January 25, we’ll get down to the business of building the kingdom of
God…just as soon as we have a better understanding of what that looks like! Jesus tells
us quite a few times, “The Kingdom of God is like….” We’ll seek to learn from some familiar parables and consider how to bring about the kingdom Jesus described to us. Not
surprisingly, it will take more than one Sunday to do this! We’ll spend several weeks
(until the start of Lent) discerning how to build the kingdom.
There’s work to do! There’s growth that needs to happen within each of us!
There are countless other things you can do (and need to do…and have to do…) with
your time, but there are gifts to be had and blessings pouring down that only reach us
when we offer God our praise. There are some experiences that can only be had when
we’re together as a family of faith. My fresh start to the New Year will be incomplete with
you. Come praise, grow, serve, give, learn, receive, and be blessed with me!
Peace and blessings,
WHO—WHAT—WHEN—WHERE: Answers to your questions.
When is the church office open?
Michelle, our secretary, is in Tues./Wed. (9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) and Thursdays (9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.).
Rev. Karen is in and out of the office Monday through Thursday. You’re always welcome to call, drop by, or
schedule an appointment. Friday is Rev. Karen’s day off, so you won’t find her that day. You’re welcome to
leave messages on her cell on Fridays, and she’ll respond to emergencies promptly and non-emergencies the
next time she’s in the office.
Where is Rev. Karen anyway?
Upstairs! Her new office is the former church library.
(Hint: You do NOT have to take all of those stairs to see if she’s available! There’s an in/out board on the
secretary’s office door. It indicates which staff members are in the building. Also, there’s a doorbell between
the secretary’s office door and the bulletin board. Press hard, and that rings in Rev. Karen’s office. She’ll
take the stairs to find you—she needs it after all the treats you fed her!)
Have a prayer request that you need your church family to pray for?
Email ([email protected]) OR call (922-4745) the church office (open Tues. – Thurs.) or Rev. Karen’s
cell phone.
Have a pastoral emergency (like a hospitalization)?
Call Rev. Karen’s cell phone (697-4510). When she’s away, our Care Pastor Coordinator (Linda Hutchison)
is almost always the one on call. Linda will send someone to help. (Hint: there is always an emergency contact listed in Rev. Karen’s email auto-reply.)
What about the other questions not answered here?
Call the church office (922-4745) or email us ([email protected]) and either Michelle or Rev. Karen will
happily help you find what you need! act listed in Rev. Karen’s email auto-reply.)

United Methodist Women—Meeting
The women of Kuna UMW will meet at 1:00pm in the Church Fellowship
Hall on January 8, 2015. All women of the church are invited!
In recent issues of this newsletter, we’ve been reminding the congregation of our leaders and
their duties. We’ve covered all areas of the Leadership Team and the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC). The other crucial leaders that serve Living Hope~KUMC are our Care Pastors.
Care Pastors are members of our church family who have received special training and are
prepared to offer pastoral care and support to those in need. They have been identified as having spiritual gifts of compassion and caring. Care Pastors do everything from home and hospital visits to helping newcomers connect with others in our congregation. They meet regularly with Rev. Karen to continue their learning, share concerns, and support one another in this important work. Because of our team
of Care Pastors, there is much more pastoral care offered and available than any one person could
manage.
Our first class of Care Pastors was commissioned in June 2013. They are Leila Baker, Fern
Drake, Cathy Gealy, Linda Hutchison, and Mary Johnson. Linda Hutchison has the special role of serving as Care Pastor Coordinator. That means that she receives the emergency calls when Rev. Karen is
away and responds by sending a Care Pastor to help those in need.
We are richly blessed to have a team like this! Please hold your Care Pastors in prayer. They
are using their God-given gifts to serve others in particular times of need. Thanks be to God for their
faithfulness!
Free Workshop: “Recognizing & Responding to Anxiety”
Anxiety is normal. It helps us get out of harm’s way and prepare for important events. It warns us when
we need to take action. But if you have anxiety that is persistent, irrational, and overwhelming and interferes with daily activities, you may have an anxiety disorder. There are several different categories of
“anxiety disorder” but most common is “generalized anxiety disorder.”
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) can affect all areas of life, including social, work, school and family. According to a national survey conducted by the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, 7 out of 10
people with GAD agreed that their chronic anxiety had an impact on their relations with spouses or significant others and two-thirds reported that GAD had a negative effect on their friendships.
We all worry. Relationships, deadlines, being on time to an appointment – you name it, there’s plenty
in life to worry about. But people with GAD experience persistent, excessive, and unrealistic worry that
goes on every day, possibly all day. They feel it’s beyond their control.
People with GAD often expect the worst, even when there is no reason for any concern. Their worrying
occurs on more days than not for at least six months and often concerns health, family, money, or work.
The exaggerated, unrelenting worrying interferes with every day living. Physical symptoms often accompany it and include restlessness, irritability, muscle tension, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping or concentrating.
Feel free to come to an Anxiety workshop on January 25, at 4:00pm. You may also contact Stephanie
Alvarez, LPC, LAMFT, NCC for a free 1 hour session to ask any specific, personal questions / email: [email protected] / cell (208) 371-3306.
‘Getting to Know You’
‘Getting to Know You’
Ann (Farmer) Kershisnik
John and Ruth Lindemann
Ann was born in Nampa and was one of three children to mother Norma
and stepfather, Charlie Farmer. She has one brother and one sister. As
a child, Ann attended a Baptist Church, but in her teen years, she attended Kuna United Methodist Church. Ann met her husband, Rich, at
the University of Idaho and they have 2 daughters and a grandson!
Rich was in the military and traveled all over the world during his service, including three tours in Vietnam. Ann never felt the urge to travel
because her husband had many exciting stories of his adventures and
shares them often with her. Ann lived in Idaho Falls after she was married and taught school when her children were young. She also worked
as a librarian in Idaho Falls. Recently, she has moved back to Kuna and
has returned to the KUMC. She enjoys the church because she likes
the philosophy of the Methodist congregation and embraces the different
opinions we share. Ann cherishes special childhood memories with her
family at Christmas; her mother always made the holidays very special.
Ann enjoys spending time with her kids and grandkids, and also enjoys
going to thrift shops, antique shops, and yard sales with her
sister, Joy. Ann loves to garden and
enjoys reading Christian fiction books.
If she could learn something new, she’d
like to paint. Ann is very content in life.
Please welcome her back to Kuna
and KUMC!
John and Ruth Lindemann lived in Monrovia, CA before they moved to Idaho in
2012. John has 1 brother and Ruth had 6 brothers! They met on a ‘blind date’ in
1967 and married in 1969. John spent 30 years in the military and Ruth worked in
a convalescent home during the early years of their marriage. They have 2 sons
and 1 daughter. Their daughter lives here in Idaho and that’s why they moved
here. John is a Vietnam vet but has only been shot at here in the states in the late
60’s in Washington D.C. This occurred during the riots after Martin Luther King
was assassinated while John was enlisted in the Army 101st Airborne Division and
was getting ready to board a plane to go overseas. Ruth’s favorite song is ‘In the
Garden’. When Ruth lived in California, she loved to garden, but in her Idaho
home, there are more rocks than soil so she doesn’t have a garden here to tend.
John says he doesn’t like to cook but he can’t compete with Ruth, who in his mind,
is the ‘greatest cook in the world’! One of their favorite memories is when the kids
were young and they stayed up all night assembling Christmas presents. At 4:40
in the morning they finally finished assembling and wrapping presents and went to
bed. At 4:45 a.m., the kids came rushing into their bedroom ready for Christmas to
start! Can anyone relate to THAT story?! John would like to spend a few weeks in
Washington D.C. (again) to tour the area and check out all the civil war monuments and memorabilia. John is an avid reader and loves to talk about books.
Something you probably don’t know about John is that he is a Cowboy Action
Shooter and would someday love to shoot from the back of a horse! Also, Ruth
and John just recently found out that
their oldest granddaughter is expecting a baby! The hardest thing Ruth
ever did was leave her family and
friends in California and move to Idaho. But when they found Kuna United
Methodist Church, she immediately
liked the church,
especially the joyous fellowship that
begins before each service. She feels
incredibly blessed to be living in Kuna.
Both John and Ruth love the individual
Bible Studies that are offered here at
KUMC.
