Art Zygielbaum, K0AIZ
Midwest Division Vice-Director
I’m very pleased to introduce Art Zygielbaum,
K0AIZ as the newly appointed Vice-Director of the
Midwest Division. Art is no stranger to many of
you - particularly the Nebraska folks as he was
the Nebraska Section Manager from 2009 to July
2013. Art lives in Lincoln, NE where he is a Research Associate Professor at the University of
Nebraska.
Art is a life member of ARRL whose amateur radio experience spans the last 54 years. His amateur radio activities include emergency communications, Air Force MARS (Nebraska State Deputy
MARS Director), and Volunteer Examiner to list
only a few.
As most of you know, Cliff Ahrens, K0CA chose to retire from the ARRL board in 2014 and
thus did not file a nomination petition for re-election. It turned out I was the only one who filed
for Director and no-one filed for the Vice-Director. Thus, no formal election was held for the
Midwest Division Director and, per ARRL bylaws, President Kay Craigie appointed Art as ViceDirector.
It was my good fortune to serve under Cliff’s leadership these past five years. His leadership,
experience, knowledge, and judgment will be certainly missed on the ARRL Board. But Art
and I can pledge to do our best to represent the interests of the ARRL members in the Midwest Division. Don’t hesitate to contact either of us with your ideas, thoughts, or concerns on
any issues that arise.

ARRL Midwest Division Convention
A Call for Proposals
It has been customary to hold an ARRL Midwest Division Convention every two years.
Our last - very excellent one - was produced by the Lebanon, Missouri ARC in 2013.
So the time is ripe for another in 2015.
A division convention is more than just another large hamfest and therefore involves
more planning, work, and management by the local club. However, it provides a larger
scale venue for amateurs across the four states to gather and participate in a broad
spectrum of amateur radio activities. It also provides an opportunity for favorable public exposure to ham radio as well as attracting new folks to the hobby.
The Midwest Division Conventions held in the recent past were:
2013 — Lebanon, Missouri
2011 — Cedar Rapids, Iowa
2008 — South Sioux City, Nebraska

W1AW/0 Iowa Portable operation – Week #2: 12/24 – 12/30

Early this fall an innocent question to Glenn Johnson, W0GJ, about the upcoming week #2 of
the Iowa W1AW/0 operation ended with me agreeing to take over coordination. At the time, it
wasn’t public but he thought his proposal for Navassa Island would be approved and if so, the
team would be under the gun to get logistics arranged by the end of December. I looked at it
as my contribution to bringing the #1 most wanted DXCC entity on the air.
My first stop was to Jason Joens, NR0X, who handled week #1. My question “What did I get
myself into?” was greeted with a chuckle. We agreed to use the same sign-up tool on his
website and I’d update the operator’s guide as first steps.
I contacted all of the clubs in Iowa that I could find and invited them to have interested members contact me if they wished to operate. In the end, we had 36 stations with 44 operators
on the air. Roughly half were new and the other half veterans from week #1. The stations
were spread across most of the state and went from a top-end contest station of N0NI to one
running 12W into a dipole and everything in between.
Our total QSO count was 35,296. Just under one-third of these came from a big multi-op effort at K0XG and N0NI. There were also many significant single operator contributions. Everyone had fun doing their part, so it was a good week. More statistics are shown in graphs on
the following pages.
Would I do it again? Maybe. I had fun operating but… I spent half my allotted “radio time”
doing paperwork, with daily updates to the team. I also monitored band spot comments, my
facebook event page and emails looking to help others fill as many band slots as possible.
I’m glad everyone enjoyed their time and we put forth a good impression of Iowa.

Notes of Possible Interest

The Annual ARRL Board of Directors Meeting will be held in Connecticut January 16 and
17, 2015. Art and I will be representing the Midwest Division in our new roles along with
several other board member changes in other divisions. The annual meeting is always a
busy time and this one will be no exception as we finish the centennial year of ARRL.
There will be new issues, new opportunities, and new challenges to deal with as we begin
our “second century”.
