The Baptism of the Lord
All you who are thirsty, come to the water!.- Isaiah 55:1
THE WATERS OF BAPTISM
When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say
that this "knits" the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree:
the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the
stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions
throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus
stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he "knit" himself to what had come before
him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel
who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove
himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had
become fully human in the waters of Mary's womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus
identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft
new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise
of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our
mission to proclaim the Good News. Copyright© J. S. Paluch Co.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

January 10, 2015
The weekend of January 17th and 18th has been chosen for the annual collection in support of our
Catholic schools. This takes place before the last Sunday of January, which every year marks the start of
Catholic Schools Week in the United States. Catholic Schools Week is a unique opportunity to build community
awareness of and involvement in the Catholic schools throughout our Diocese and in our nation. The Diocese of
Palm Beach is proud of the excellent spiritual, academic and physical education provided in our 19 schools by over 500 dedicated educators serving more than 6,000 students. Our schools provide an avenue to pass on our Catholic beliefs to future generations and
contribute concretely to their growth and development as conscientious human beings geared for future success in all areas of
life.
In 2013 the Diocesan Office of Catholic Schools published Strategic Vision 2020: Charting a Course of Education,
which outlines a detailed vision for the Catholic schools in the Diocese through the year 2020. Pastors, principals, parents,
parishioners, business and civic leaders, as well as educators from universities and public schools participated in a Diocesan
Leadership Summit on Catholic Schools resulting in the strategic vision. Strategic Vision 2020 will help our schools to shine in
four key areas: Mission and Catholic Identity; Academic Excellence; Governance and Leadership; and Operational Vitality. I
invite you to take a moment to review this vision that will propel our Catholic schools into the next decade. It is posted on the
Diocesan website at www.diocesepb.org/strategicvision, or you may request a printed copy by calling 561-775-9547. Catholic
school education is a priority in the life of the Diocese of Palm Beach. Your continued prayerful and financial support of the
Catholic schools in our Diocese is very much needed and greatly appreciated.
With gratitude for your generosity and every prayerful wish, I am

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
In the 1560s, the Council of Trent attempted to standardize
the widely variant customs for the pastoral care of the sick
and dying. We had inherited a practice called "extreme unction," from the Latin words meaning anointing at the point of
death. The deeper tradition, however, is about the prayer of
faith that will heal and restore the sick person, and is straight
from the Letter of James. The Fathers went back to the beginning, and while not discarding the "extreme unction"
name, made a plea for the proper use of this sacrament.
As soon as a person is in danger of death from sickness or
old age, they reasoned, the time for the sacrament
had already arrived.
As a result of this desire, the next ritual text for anointing
contained an innovation: a rite for visiting the sick that included readings from scripture, psalms, and prayers. Old
customs fade slowly, however, and the quality of pastoral
care languished for centuries while people delayed the celebration of a consoling and effective sacrament, sometimes
missing the opportunity completely. A priest ministering to a
dying and unconscious patient alone in a room has never
been the desire of the Church. Our tradition is far too rich for
this sacrament to be celebrated in such a diminished and
ungenerous manner. -Rev. James Field, Copyright© J. S. Paluch Co.
Parish Nursing Ministry
begins at Holy Spirit…..
The parish nurse ministry integrates
faith & health caring for the whole per‐
son.—Mind, Body & Spirit! The ministry
provides support for health promotion, wellness, disease
prevention and management. The parish nurse brings a
holistic approach to serving our parish’s health needs as a
health educator, health counselor, referral advisor, health
advocate, developer of support groups and volunteer coor‐
dinator. Our hope and goal is to improve the lives of our
parishioners, especially the elderly, in times of need.
The Parish Nurse Ministry is guided by Trish Weaver, RN.
Trish has a nursing background in caring for post operative
patients, Alzheimer’s patients, hospice, wound care, geriat‐
rics, and infusion nursing. She was on the staff of Jupiter
Medical Center and is part of the pastoral care team at JFK
Medical Center. You may contact Trish at 561.303.8450.

No One Buried Alone Ministry at Our Lady Queen of
Peace Cemetery
As Christians, we believe the body is sacred
and as the temple of the Holy Spirit here on
Earth, deserves repose in a consecrated
dwelling as we await the coming of our Lord
Jesus and the resurrection of our bodies.
Guided by this truth, Our Lady Queen of
Peace Cemetery in Royal Palm Beach accepts the remains of those who have no family or friends to bury them…the loveless, the
homeless, and the abandoned stillborns who
possess inherent dignity because they are
made in the image of God. Please consider volunteering to attend these
charitable services which occur periodically throughout the year. If
you would like to be added to our charitable committal service notification list, please contact Christina: 561-793-0711 [email protected].
