A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE! My Dear Friends, We have already begun the Church’s New Year with the season of Advent. This week we celebrate the beginning of the New Year in our civil calendar. It is good that we precede it with the Feast of the Holy Family as this time of the year is a time for the family. We may get together with other members of our families in a way we do not do at any other time of the year. We may of course do the opposite and avoid such family meetings. All families are different and get on or don’t get on in their particular ways. But is is a time when we ponder family life, what it has brought us, for good or bad, and the particular links that have contributed so much to the people we are. Jesus is born into just such a mixture. We don’t know much about his family background, apart from his parents, Mary and Joseph, and we don’t know much about them. What we do know is that they cared for him and sought to give him the best upbringing they could in their hazardous world of an occupied country. Our families are our first inspiration in our Christian lives. They are also our first testing grounds. As we begin a New Year together, we pray for the insight and fortitude to live our family lives well. Fr. Nottingham Justice and Peace: Sonia Aslam works for the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Pakistan. She does exactly the same as us- she supports and fights for human rights. By doing this she has put her and her family’s lives in danger, as she has been threatened for working against Islam. She has fled to the UK, but has been refused Asylum. A Christian country, that promotes the same values that she fights for in Pakistan, will not allow her to stay here. An appeal is due and she needs all the support she can get. The Briars Diocesan Youth Centre is looking for support for their fundraising initiative, a Big Bike Ride that will take place over three days from 3rd-5th July 2015 and will cover 150 miles of beautiful Derbyshire scenery. Accommodation will be supplied en route at Alton Castle and Hartington Hall Youth Hostel. You need to be 18+, and they will be looking for you to raise a minimum of £1,000!
