The Baptism of the Lord
All you who are thirsty, come to the water! — Isaiah 55:1
The Waters of Baptism
When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this "knits" the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is
grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept
wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it
so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he "knit"
himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised
Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in
the waters of Mary's womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of
repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is
through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members
onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin
and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us,
as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to
proclaim the Good News.

Confirmation Seminar
John Guerra to Enter the Seminary
I am happy to announce that one of our parishioners, John
Guerra will begin college seminary this semester. John will enroll
as a second semester freshman at St. Joseph Seminary College
on the northshore. John will be studying and discerning for the
priesthood for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. John attended
St. Francis Cabrini and St. Pius X elementary schools and Jesuit
high school. He is the son of Alison and Ramiro Guerra. Please
keep John in your prayers as he begins seminary and continues
to discern God’s call in his life.
Baptism During Lent
As we did last year, we will not have any scheduled baptisms
during Lent. This is a common practice in the church to help
capture the spirit of the Lenten season. Traditionally, Lent has
been a time in the church to prepare for baptism celebrated at
Easter by “letting go” of sin before beginning a new life as a
Christian. To highlight this time of repentance we will not have
baptisms during Lent unless there are some special circumstances. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, February 18.
The next Confirmation Seminar will take place
this Sunday after 5pm Mass in the MultiPurpose Room. All high school juniors are required to attend. Please contact Kate Coyne,

Thus says the LORD: All you who are
thirsty, come to the water! You who have
no money, come, receive grain and eat;
come, without paying and without cost,
drink wine and milk! Why spend your
money for what is not bread, your wages
for what fails to satisfy? Heed me, and you
shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare.
Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may
have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to
David. As I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander of nations,
so shall you summon a nation you knew
not, and nations that knew you not shall
run to you, because of the LORD, your
God, the Holy One of Israel, who has glorified you. Seek the LORD while he may be
found, call him while he is near. Let the
scoundrel forsake his way, and the wicked
man his thoughts; let him turn to the

1 John 5:1—9
Beloved: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the Father loves also the one
begotten by him. In this way we know that we love the children
of God when we love God and obey his commandments. For the
love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. And his
commandments are not burdensome, for whoever is begotten by
God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world
is our faith. Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one
who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who
came through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone,
but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one who testifies, and
the Spirit is truth. So there are three that testify, the Spirit, the
water, and the blood, and the three are of one accord. If we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater.
Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf
of his Son.

This is what John the Baptist proclaimed: “One mightier than I is
coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs
of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit.” It happened in those days that Jesus came
from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.
On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn
open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a
voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with
you I am well pleased.”

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
I believe in one God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all things
visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord
Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of

God from God, Light from Light, true God
from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him
all things were made. For us men and for
our salvation he came down from heaven,
(bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate

Loving and faithful God, through the years
the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of
Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster,
epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you
to help us in the battle of today against
violence, murder and racism. We implore
you to give us your wisdom that we may
build a community founded on the values
of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and
dignity of all people. Bless parents that
they may form their children in faith. Bless
and protect our youth that they may be
peacemakers of our time. Give consolation
to those who have lost loved ones through
violence. Hear our prayer and give us the
perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask
this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of
Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother
