Baptism of the Lord Sunday Year B 11th Jan 2015—Issue No. 084 Baptism of the Lord is Another Epiphany The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord br ings the joy of Chr istmas to its completion. At Christmas we have contemplated the birth of the Word incarnate. The God who dwells in unapproachable light is now made visible in the baby laying in a manger. In the mystery of the Epiphany, we meditated on Christ’s manifestation to all nations represented by the wise men from the East, who came to adore the Child. In the mystery of Christ’s Baptism in the Jordan River, we encounter the promised Messiah, the second Adam (1 Cor 15:47 who comes to repair the first Adam’s guilt. In Israel at 30 years of age, one reached full maturity and could become a master. Having reached adulthood, before he began his public ministry, Jesus manifested himself definitively in the River Jordan as the One sent by the Father for the salvation of mankind. The Father’s voice from heaven shows that Jesus is the eternal Son. The descent of the Holy Spirit shows that he is definitively consecrated in his whole being as the Anointed One per excellence. It is a true manifestation of the Holy Trinity, which gives testimony to the divinity of Jesus, to his being the promised Messiah, the One whom God has sent to free his people from sin. (cf. Is 40:2) Christ did not need the baptism of John, because he was absolutely sinless and impeccable. Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to confer upon them the power of the true Baptism which would remove all the sins of the world: "Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sin of the world." He gives the waters the power to beget children of God. Cardinal J. Ratzinger in his book Jesus of Nazareth, p.18 states: “Jesus loaded the burden of all mankind’s guilt upon his shoulders; he bore it down into the depths of the Jordan. He inaugurated his public activity by stepping into the place of sinners.” This awesome miracle is repeated to us on the day of our Baptism. At Chr ist' s baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At his baptism Christ was proclaimed the Beloved Son of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted children of God. At Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our Baptism the heavens were opened to us. Dear parents, in asking for Baptism for your children, you bear witness to your faith, and manifest the joy of being Christians, of belonging to the Church. This joy comes from knowing you have become children of God and are welcomed into a loving embrace, in the same way that a mother supports and embraces her child. This joy, that directs the path of every Christian, is based on your personal relationship with Jesus, a relationship that guides the whole of human existence. You must know that there is nothing greater than to know Christ and to communicate friendship with him to others. Those who have this experience are not willing to give up their faith for anything in the world. Dear godparents, yours is the important duty of supporting Christian parents in raising baptized children in an ever deeper friendship with the Lord. May you always give them your good example, through the exercise of Christian virtues openly and without compromise, especially in the face of a society that often considers those who live by faith in Jesus to be old-fashioned and out of date. The seed of faith, hope and charity, infused by God –– the seed that was placed in the children’s hearts through the power of the Holy Spirit, must always be fed by the Word of God and the Sacraments, so that these virtues of the Christian can grow and reach full maturity, in order to make them true witnesses of the Lord. At his baptism Jesus prayed; after their Baptism, you, parents and godparents, must pray and incessantly invoke upon them the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and entrust them to the protection of the Holy Virgin: May she always guard them with her maternal presence and accompany them at every moment of their lives. Amen. LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING Isaiah 55:1-11 Incline your ear, and come to the waters; listen, so that you may live. PARISH NEWS The Parish Pastoral Council will meet next Thur sday, 15th J anuar y 2015 at 7pm in the Par ish Meeting Room. The Executive will meet at 5pm on Tuesday, 13th January to set up the Agenda. Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labour for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. The Parish Finance Committee will meet on Tuesday, 20th J anuar y 2015 at 7pm in the Par ish Meeting Room. Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. RESPONSORIAL CANTICLE Isaiah 12:2-3. 4-6 R. W e shall draw water joyfully, singing joyfully, from the wellsprings of salvation. Surely God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid, for the Lord God is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. R. Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known his deeds among the nations; proclaim that his name is exalted. R. Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth. Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel. R. SECOND READING 1 John 5:1-9 There are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. There are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood, and these three agree. If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (See John 1:29) Alleluia, alleluia! J ohn saw Jesus approaching him, and said: This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Alleluia! GOSPEL Mark 1:7-11 Y ou are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. In his preaching he proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” COMMUNION ANTIPHON (Jn 1:32.34) Behold the One of whom J ohn said: I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.
