2015 ALASKA ANCHORAGE GYMNASTICS
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS: Winona State is coming off
a 2014 campaign in which it averaged 181.289 and posted
a season-high of 184.675 ... one of the few remaining Div.
II programs in women’s collegiate gymnastics, the Minnesota school features a young roster with two seniors and
10 freshmen.
THE SERIES ...
vs Winona State: UAA leads 16-12 (tied 8-8 in Anchorage)
Last: UAA 190.025-186.075 (2/8/10 at Centenary) / Streak: UAA 9
Notes: UAA’s current win streak dates back to 2002 ... Winona’s
last win came 182.675-181.050, Mar. 11, 2000 in Minnesota ... the
last two meetings have been on neutral floors ... the last meetings in
Anchorage were Jan. 21-22, 2005 ... series started in 1986.
2014 UAA SEASON RECAP: The Seawolves battled
through an injury plagued season to post four team
scores of 190 or higher in 2014 ... UAA posted backto-back dual victories over Temple to highlight its final
season in the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, and posted a season-high 192.200 score in the season finale
at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in March ... then-sophomores Stefany Bryan
Penker
and Simone Penker and then-freshmen Julia York
and Kallie Randolph all earned All-MPSF accolades, while Bryan
became the 13th gymnast in program history to qualify for the NCAA
Div. I West Regional Championships.
BRYAN MAKES REGIONALS, TABBED MVP: Stefany Bryan was named the team’s 2014 MVP on Apr.
23 when the Seawolves celebrated with their year-end
banquet … Bryan was an NCAA Div. I West Regional
Championships all-around qualifier – just the 11th in
program history – and earned All-MPSF honors in the
all-around and on uneven bars … the Seattle native
competed all-around 10 times, averaging 37.548 and
Bryan
producing a career-high of 38.475 on Feb. 16 … Bryan’s 9.584 bars average ranked 10th-best in program history, and
she also made the MPSF All-Academic Team with an overall GPA
of 3.75 … other team award winners included Julia York (Most Improved) and Sariaye Jensen and Simone Penker (co-Most Inspirational).
MORE GYMNAST NOTES: Along with Bryan, the
2015 Seawolves return three gymnasts with NCAA
Regionals experience, with senior Morgan Cook and
junior M’rcy Matsunami both making it as freshman,
in 2012 and 2013 respectively ... after being limited by
an ankle sprain for four straight meets, Cook returned
to the all-around in UAA’s last two 2014 regular-season
competitions, topping the 38-point mark each time …
Cook
with a season average of 38.025, Cook tied for 10th
on UAA’s all-time list, while her 9.609 average on beam ranked 5th
and her 9.622 average on floor was 15th … Cook tied for team-high
honors in 2014 with four individual event victories … on UAA’s other
season average lists, Kallie Randolph ranked No. 5 all-time with her
9.682 mark on floor, Julia York was No. 12 on vault at 9.643, and Nicole Larkin tied for No. 16 on bars at 9.536 last season … Randolph
equaled Cook with four all-around victories — all on floor exercise.
